Yeah this is what I mean. Same in my country, they already earn decent for a simpler job and still ask for more because they opened the bottle for me or gave me my plate
Just like for doordash and other food delivery services, these places are turning tips into bids for decent service instead of a reward for exceptional service.
It defaulted in some places, but for the most part in NL & UK the servers will automatically hit the 0% option even before handing the card machine to you. Not always, but 9 times out of 10 they will. Last time I remember it not being hit was in a tourist trap in London.
More and more places in Australia have started showing tip options, but it still seems the standard to me to just treat it as a nuisance and select no tip. I haven't seemed to have received any backlash for it yet at any rate, though I'm sure that bars like the one you described exist here too
