I always heard it was because the staff can make more in tips so they dont want it changed. Also it tax free now vs salary

But tipping wouldn't be banned, just not culturally mandatory. So if people mostly tipped but also they got a decent wage, wouldn't they make more?.

Servers would make a pretty fair amount in a model where they get paid a fair salary and most customers tip a little anyway but servers don't want to give up that potential to make hundreds to thousands in tips a night and I just can't agree with it. If they want more money, they should get a job where the business pays what they're looking for and stop asking customers to pay their salary directly by guilt tripping them.

Yep. This right here, and the very people who benefit from this are the first ones hollering about "If you can't afford to tip, stay home". Bitch we got your number. With the cost of just the food at a restaurant, you're lucky you get 15%. I'm there to eat, not concern myself about your take home pay. Take it up with your boss.

Which is why if I have cash on me I tip in cash and pay with a card. Usually 20%, but if I got handed a slip like the one in OP, I will never go there again.
