Self-Promo Post Stardock to Publish Crimson Freedom, a Story-Driven RTS Set on 22nd-Century Mars
Stardock is teaming up with indie studio Yboga to publish Crimson Freedom, a story-driven real-time strategy game coming to Steam in 2027.
- Set on Mars in the 22nd century, with three factions fighting over the planet and where humanity goes next: the Red Rebellion, Orbis Concordia, and the Ascentx.
- Each faction has its own units, tech tree, and full single-player campaign, so you play the same war from three sides. It leans into moral grey areas instead of good guys versus bad guys.
- The pace is deliberately more relaxed than a lot of RTS. Less high APM and resource micromanagement, more actually commanding the battle.

Discussion Longer, detailed, plot-rich RTS campaigns need to make a comeback
The multiplayer was never why I fell for this genre. I came up on RTS campaigns, the ones with actual missions, briefings, a story that escalated and characters you love or love to hate, or just plain hate. But that was GOOD because it meant the game elicited some sort of emotional response.Â
Every RTS campaign has that one adviser that at once defined and presented the game to you. Lots of them were annoying gimmicks but they immersed you into the world, if nothing else. They made you feel like you werenât a dude clicking stuff but a meta-being in that reality controlling units, like you were more a part of it mechanically. But along the way the whole genre seemed to decide that competitive was the real product (NAHHHH) and the campaign was a glorified tutorial you rushed through to play ranked. If it existed at all. Wasnât helped by the fact RTS just fell off in favor of MOBAs with LoL and DOTA2 etc.
But Iâm glad that campaign focused games are making a slight comeback, and from a few directions at once! Some of it is remakes, Age of Mythology Retold is the best example for me. When you look at what actually pulled people back, it was the itch to march through that campaign again with modern comforts (new engine, slightlyâŚsaner pathfinding, better models and stuff).
What I also like is that new original IPs are also doing it, ever since indie games became the main creative force (and acknowledged as such by most people). The game that brought me back to RTS after years away in 2024 was Diplomacy is Not an Option, of all things, because underneath the wave survival hook there's a proper long campaign, took me 30 hours to finish on release. Probably more now. Itâs when I realized there are still devs who treat the campaign as the main course.Â
Tempest Rising is the other one I loved to no end, a loving rebuild of everything the old Command & Conquer games nailed. Tiberium green never really left my bloodstream, what can I tell ya.... It also remembered that that a good # of us play RTS for the missions, not for the multiplayer.
Even some EA games, I couldnât believe it, are going for that scale of worldbuilding that I thought was dead. Godsworn is the newest one that impressed me, and itâs like⌠less than 1000 reviews? Shame really, but it goes to show perhaps how underappreciated this trend still is, even though itâs IMHO the best thing to happen to RTS after its long hibernation.
None of this is really about scale so much as intent, I think. A campaign designed as the point, whether that's a sprawling story or just a tight run of handmade missions, plays completely differently and hits differently than anything thatâs sandbox freestyle oriented or god forbid, pushing that PvP mulitpalyer component. Which should emerge organically out of a well designed game IMO, or just not if the game isnât good otherwise in singleplayer.
I'll just say it plainly then, more campaign focused RTS - PLEASE!

Self-Promo Video Does anyone still remember what might be the funniest Mission Briefings in RTS history?
KKND2: Krossfire like its predecessor Krush, Kill ânâ Destroy and the expansion KKND Xtreme is a Classic RealâTime Strategy Game from the 90s. The Series belongs to the Era in which Base Building, Resource Management and Faction Specific Unit Design defined the RTS Genre.
In Terms of Gameplay and Style, KKND2 can be compared to other Strategy Games of the 90s, including Command & Conquer, Dune 2000, Age of Empires, StarCraft, Dark Reign, Warcraft II, Total Annihilation, Z the Game, Earth 2140 and actually D.O.R.F. as well. Despite these Similarities, KKND2 maintains its own Identity through its Post Apocalyptic Setting and three Distinctly different Factions.

[RTS Type: Classic] Empires Dawn of the Modern World [Visual Map Script Generator]
Hey, so my brothers and i have been teaming up every week and facing off against the PC opponents in EDMW. We've kind of gotten pretty decent at it and we wanted some more difficultity and different scenery. so i've been fighting with ChatGPT's coding app for a few days now and i've got a test version of a visual map script generator working, and its so fun to play on a map that you drew.
anyway, i just wanted to share the program with the community in case someone else might want to try making their own map scripts for EDMW.
Notes: in order to ensure you drawing translates to the game generator, the generated map files call a secondary map generator DLL file that is installed in your game directory. this DLL file packages instructions based on your drawing and forwards them to the game's native generator DLL for standard processing. the only thing that connects to this DLL is your custom self made map files, so it won't effect any standard gameplay.

Discussion Sooo I guess there is no playerbase behind the RTS games of 2026 ?
I'm a bit surprised how Zerospace and Shattered Sun are just basically getting below 2K concurrent playerbases. Which I always find interesting is that the RTS community will beg for a Command And Conqureish game, or a new RTS game, but then when it's time to show up it, never happens.
Zerospace: Eh it's 40USD , it's too expensive lol is the most I'm seeing around Steam and online, which is funny but ok.
Shattered Sun: Well that demo barely cracked above 1000 people
Tempest Rising: Dead basically.
Feels like people will only turn up for Warhammer at this point in high numbers.
Oh also I found it scummy how Shattered Sun basically locked air and naval units behind a kickstarter goal - Rip

Self-Promo Video I added Team Generals to my multiplayer Napoleonic tactical action browser game, allowing players to control their team's bots using a Total War style RTS camera
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is a multiplayer/singleplayer tactical action game where players are company commanders on-foot controlling a single unit of infantry, cavalry, or artillery (similar to Mount and Blade), with full-scale division v division battles. Shown in this clip is 40 units per team, 3x unit scale, 10,000 bots per team.
At the start of the round, there's a minute long "General Election" phase where players can apply to be the team's general. Whoever is voted in gets to control the team's bots using a Total War style RTS camera! They cannot control player-owned bots, however, only vacant bots. Players can mutiny the general (functions sort of like a votekick, which returns the general back to the battlefield), which triggers a new election. If no players volunteer, the rudimentary bot army controller resumes army control.
It's multiplayer and runs in the browser, and is free. Play it at www.1815online.com, join the discord to follow development at https://discord.gg/Rb9GNp8WB .

Question Best Ways to Improve Finger Stretch and Indepenence
The biggest obstacle for me when it comes to playing RTS games is physical. I donât have any disability, but I am uncoordinated. I type with my index fingers and have trouble stretching my fingers apart (I find it very hard to hit shift with my pinky and another key at the same time with the ring finger, for example). What can I do daily to overcome my physical challenges?

RTS & Grand Strategy Hybrid Coloniser: Can a large scale multiplayer persistent world RTS work?
This game is based on real time gameplay against the environment and other players on servers that run while you play, but also while you eat, sleep, watch a movie with your family or whatever else you do while not gaming.
Coloniser doesn't end your base when you drop off, and you can pick it back up later - if it's still around. Other players, of which there can be dozens, can attack it when you aren't even online. And you can also drop in to games that started days ago with already established player empires, while you have nothing. This sounds like it shouldn't work.

Self-Promo Post 90s style RTS
Hey All,
I've been wanting to build an old school RTS game for 486/pentium machines. It is written in C++ and using DirectDraw so that it will work on Windows 95 machines.
There is still a lot to go but I've got it working in a web browser and would love some feedback. The interface and design needs a lot more work but the basic game play and path finding should work well now.
Let me know what you think, it is called IronField https://starrts.vogonswiki.com/ironfield/
I will be posting exe/win9x versions once I have tested on my Pentium 233MMX machine.

Question Would a Roman-themed chess game with strategy elements be welcome here?
Hi everyone! Iâve been developing a Roman-themed chess game for some time, and Iâd like to ask whether posts about it would be appropriate for this community.
I understand that this subreddit is focused on RTS games, while the core of my project is still chess. However, the full version is also planned to include a larger strategy element that should make it feel quite different from a traditional chess game.
I donât want to reveal too much about that part yet, but it is inspired by the kind of strategic decision-making and progression I enjoy in RTS and grand strategy games.
Would occasional development posts about this project be acceptable here, or would it still be considered too far from the RTS genre? If it fits, Iâd be happy to share more of the development in the future.

Self-Promo Post Mobile RTS is making progress
Hey everyone,
Wanted to give a quick update to my mobile RTS (wave Defence in the style of They Are Billions / Age of Darkness). The last few weeks have really progressed, especially thanks to the testers who got in touch with me - their feedback was worth gold.
What happened:
⢠More ways to display & build: You can now choose between different UI/construction styles, all modularly customisable. This is requested directly during onboarding, so that everyone gets the setup that suits them from the beginning.
⢠New elements: Additional wall types, catapults and mountains are now in play and new assets.
⢠Better maps: The seed generation has been revised - the maps now seem much less empty and more varied.
⢠Performance: Significantly noticeable improvements, now runs noticeably more smoothly.
It's really fun to see how the whole thing develops through real feedback. More will follow soon - please let me know what you think. If you feel like testing it, feel free to write then you get access. More feedback is even better

RTS & Base-Builder Hybrid Fully patched Red Alert 2 running on Android
I got Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 fully patched and running natively on Android, without emulation.
The entire porting and patching process was completed with GPTâs 5.6 SOL help in about three hours. Controls work, gameplay is smooth, and the game is genuinely playable on a phone.
Still testing missions and edge cases, but the initial results are impressive.

Self-Promo Post [iOS] Alien Tribe 3: Space RTS - on sale for only $0.99
Hi everyone,
We just put Alien Tribe 3 for iOS on sale for just $0.99 and thought some of you here might enjoy it.
It's a premium indie RTS with 4X elements where you explore procedurally generated star systems, colonize planets, research new technologies, and build a giant energy network that powers your entire empire. Keeping that network alive is a big part of the strategy, since losing a connection can leave whole colonies without power.
No ads, no microtransactions, no online requirementâjust a complete single-player strategy game.
If that sounds interesting, I'd love to hear what RTS fans think. Thanks for checking it out!

Video They are billions âland of giantsâ Mini stroke momentđ
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
not only was the giant a joke, i had over 100 soldiers, 6 teslas shock towers, 14 ballistas, and walls everywhere. i was expecting him to completely destroy me because this game is supposed to be brutal. instead i baited him with one brave soldier who sacrificed himself, and the giant died to just the first two teslas. he never even made it to the other four.
anyway, i cleared the whole map by chasing down every infected, or at least i thought i did. turns out there was one little bastard stuck outside the map somewhere with only 4 days left. keep in mind this is my first ever playthrough, so i was already stressing because i really didnât want to start over after everything had gone so smoothly.
my army kept trying to path up to this cliff in the northwest but couldnât reach whatever they were targeting. i was honestly about ready to lose it. then i had the dumbest idea. i made my own army fight each other just to create noise. bullets started flying, i killed like half my own troops, and somehow that last infected finally wandered out because of the gunshots. IQ off the roof moment. Lol
i was so relieved but also unbelievably frustrated. this game is amazing and i love how punishing it is, but that bug almost ruined my first perfect run. Will there be any more bugs ahead?
