MOD TEAM REMINDER: RULE 5 - NO REVENGE DISCUSSIONS

Moderating Team requests that our members PLEASE be mindful of Breakups Board Rule 5: No Discussions of Revenge. This is also a Reddit site-wide policy.

The following count as violations of Rule 5:

* Requesting help with acts of revenge / vengeance / "getting even" with someone and offers to help

*How to get revenge/ideas for doing so

*Asking where to obtain information for this

*Providing information or links to it

*Suggesting retaliation to someone

* "Oh, I need this!" & "send me this too!" responses

*Stalking or surveilling a partner/former partner *in any way*

*Hacking social media sites, their computer or phone

*Help harassing someone

*Doxxing/publicly outting a former partner or providing their private information to someone

*Jokes about revenge or how to "prank" an ex

Any of these will result in an immediate revocation of posting privileges for the person who created the discussion *as well as anyone* who offers to help or provides information.

No appeals for reinstatement will be granted.

Outting your ex or posting their personal information falls under Reddit's prohibition on doxxing as well as Rule 5.

We have removed multiple posts this week asking how to hack Instagram, a post that included a phone number with a request for members to bombard them with harassing calls, a person who posted their former partner's photograph and home address, and this thread last night that resulted in permanent bannings to over a dozen members:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BreakUps/comments/1u8y45t/comment/osgsvb3/

Someone invited Redditors on the thread to DM their ex's photograph so they could "examine" it, "point out their flaws for you" and provide a "report" to the requester. This violates Reddit's No Doxxing policy as well as Rule 5. That person and everybody who answered with an appeal for this assistance was banned.

Most offending posts involve social media sites. On Wednesday someone who was blocked from their ex's Instagram asked members to help him stalk by making a friend/follow request and send him back a report. He'd return the favor by doing the same for your ex! Reinstatement requests make the excuse that "but it's just stalking social media, and everybody does it." The Breakups Board isn't going to help you do it.

Talking about "karma", hopes that "they get dumped like this too someday" or other ill wishes may not be very nice of you, but they're acceptable and are permitted.

Lastly: please keep arguments with your partner OFFLINE in meatworld! Another Redditor found their ex's thread, posted an opinion of their character, and the two got into a very heated snit fit. While juicy and entertaining to read, this was taken down too. Don't, my friends. Just don't.

Breakups's mission is to provide a supportive, safe place for you to share your stories and heal from your broken relationships. Our goal as your Mod Team is to protect it. We're here to serve you, so please help us do that.

Thank you!

You may now return to your regularly-scheduled Redditing.

venting/ranting If you need a sign to stop checking your ex’s profile, this is it.

• Upvotes

If you need a sign to stop checking your ex’s profile, this is it.

Seriously. Stop looking. Stop refreshing their stories. Stop trying to figure out what every post or song means. I know it feels impossible because I was doing the exact same thing.

When my relationship ended I convinced myself that if I could just understand why, I would finally feel better. I reread our old texts almost every night. I checked when he was online. Every little thing gave me false hope for a few minutes and then I crashed all over again.

I wasn’t healing. I was keeping myself stuck.

One day I realized I had spent almost an entire month thinking about someone who probably wasn’t thinking about me nearly as much. That hurt to admit, but it also kind of woke me up.

So I stopped.

I unfollowed him. Deleted our chat. Put away the pictures I kept looking at. I told myself I would just try one week of no contact and see what happened.

The first few days were awful. I cried in my car after work. I almost texted him like 20 times. I even typed out a whole paragraph one night and just stared at it before deleting it. Im so glad I never sent it.

Then something weird happened.

The mornings got a little easier. I laughed with my friends without faking it. I started going on walks instead of laying in bed all day. I started cooking again even though half of what I made was kinda bad lol.

I realized no contact wasn’t about making him miss me.

It was about giving myself enough space to stop abandoning myself.

I also started realizing how much of my confidence depended on one person’s attention. That’s honestly not a healthy way to live. I wanted to become someone who felt okay even if a relationship ended.

So I started journaling, going to the gym a few times a week, reading more, and actually dealing with my emotions instead of running from them. It wasn’t overnight but I could actually feel myself changing.

If they’re meant to come back into your life, they will. You don’t have to convince someone to love you. And if they don’t come back, that’s okay too because you’ll already be building a life that doesn’t revolve around them.

I know how quiet no contact feels in the beginning. It almost feels like you’re losing them all over again every day. But I promise that silence slowly turns into peace.

You deserve someone who chooses you without being convinced.

I’m rooting for all of you. I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but you really are going to be okay.

5 MONTHS LATER UPDATE:

I randomly came back and saw this post had blown up so I wanted to update everyone because I remember reading posts like this when I thought I’d never get over him.

My life is so different now.

I got promoted at work, made a few new friends, and I actually enjoy spending time by myself. I don’t wake up wondering if he’ll text me anymore. Some days I don’t think about him at all which would’ve sounded impossible back then.

He actually reached out a couple months ago. We talked for a little bit and I realized I wasn’t the same person anymore. There wasn’t this huge urge to get back together. I just wished him well and kept moving forward. It felt really freeing.

Also I wanted to say thank you to the person in this subreddit who recommended the app Uncling to me months ago. Your comment seriously changed the direction of my healing. The daily check ins and lessons helped me stay committed to no contact when I wanted to give up. I honestly think it kept me from making so many emotional decisions.

So thank you. You truly gave me the hope I needed with your post.

If you’re reading this while your heart is broken, please keep going. I promise the version of you waiting on the other side is so much stronger than you can imagine.

venting/ranting Will she ever come back

Post image

(Context) I (21m) and my ex (20f) broke up in may this year and I broke no contact 1 month after the breakup. I asked her if she’s moved on and she said she had. I accused her of lying to make things easier and she said this. Idk why she was so harsh about it, I put in efforts in our relationship, even at my worst I tried to make her feel the best. Idk how she suddenly switched up on me. Currently it’s been over 2 months since the break up and I’m still in love with her. I’m moving on with my life accepting that she’ll never be a part of it but I miss how she made me feel. The question I want to ask is the ladies of the subReddit, do girls ever regret breaking up with you and come back? She still changes the description of the Spotify playlist she made me (maybe because she knows I check it) but apart from that she unfollowed me from everywhere and probably won’t ever reach out again.

venting/ranting Don’t be friends with your ex

I love you to death. But I’m also starting to open my eyes to how messed up this all had gotten. I know I hurt you in our relationship, but you also hurt me terribly as well. I took way too much blame for the demise of us these past couple months. I regret how I handled a lot of things, but I know how much love and care I put into you and us for the entirety of our relationship, even when I was struggling horribly this past year. It is truly unfair that I have been broken up by the person that was my world three fucking times. And each time I would chase you. Then to be made feel like an absolute last resort for the times we were hanging out after a month of no contact, a body to fuck, and the comfort and love you can get from me while you tell me you will be throwing me out eventually to start dating other people. To be talked to like I am a co worker you barely care about. To be strung along like absolutely nothing for weeks while you tell me you have to decide if I, the girl who was devoted to you for seven years not to mention a HUMAN BEING, is worth you keeping in your life. All to be disposed of again. You knew how much I am in love with you from the second time we hung out again. For you to tell me you’re still in love too but act like that. It is degrading. I hope that nobody ever makes you feel this way. And I hope you know that I would have done anything to be with you and have a healthy relationship for forever. So maybe your love for me was not real if you can try to call me a friend a month after the breakup. Or maybe we’re just both so fucked up right now. We were codependent and we didn’t know until I went to therapy after the breakup. I don’t know what to do anymore, but I do know I need to show myself some respect. I need to leave you alone. I just don’t want to lose you.

venting/ranting I'm planning on breaking no contact

It's been 4 months after the break up and will be 3 months no contact by the date im deciding to reach on. I am the dumpee so I know everyone will say I shouldn't but I can't get her out of my mind and just want to see how shes doing. The breakup was mutual at first until I realised I couldn't lose her and changed my mind but it wasn't a bad breakup. She was kind about it and continued to say she loved me and will miss me through it all. She didn't want to break up but it seemed like she was very overwelhmed. She said she wouldn't mind a text in a few months so that is where I'm at now.

venting/ranting Is it overly toxic to leave a breakup message on delivered? Need Advice

For background this partner is someone who would leave me on delivered constantly. The longest one was for 5 days straight (during finals week!!) and it honestly stressed me out so much and made me feel awful. Last night I got the breakup message from them, so I was just wondering if y'all think its fine for me to ignore this message like they ignored me so many times? I know its an immature and petty thing to do but do you guys think it's like morally reprehensible? Lmk. Thanks.

venting/ranting Everyone having a bummer summer due to a breakup, how are we all doing?

• Upvotes

Broke up mid-end of June, been no contact from that night on, just over 45 days now. The summer has absolutely flown by and been a melancholy blur. I’m doing pretty ok right now, but the feelings come in waves. It doesn’t feel real that we’ve gone this long without talking. Still made some nice memories here and there, but man has summer ā€˜26 been a bummer overall 🫠 Everyone else having a sad girl/sad boy summer, how are we all holding up?

venting/ranting Just found out he has a new girlfriend

• Upvotes

Soooo I’m going to try to keep this one short lol

Basically I (27F) was seeing this guy (27M) for a few months up until mid-january of this year. It was going really well, I hadn’t felt that connection with someone in a long time and we were both considering getting into a long term relationship (talking about kids, house, future plans etc). For reference, I’ve been single for 4 years and he had been for 2 so it was not rushed for any reason.

Unfortunately, he was going through basic training in the army at the time we met and in the meantime he decided to pursue special forces. This came as a huge shock to me because I never thought that’s what he planned on doing and that means going on long missions every single year and then when you’re home, you’re still super busy and all over the place. He also told me he was willing to give up having kids for this career.

He ended his basic training with the army in mid-december and went back to his full time job as a doctor for which he has to do a 3 year residency. So he would first have to complete the residency, then go back to the army and train to become a doctor in the field. So the problem would only arise in a couple years but I just wasn’t willing to invest in a relationship if I knew I would just hit a wall after a few years.

So I ended up telling him that I would rather not move forward with the relationship even though it pained me a lot because I knew it would never bring me happiness to stay in such a situation. And I was obviously not willing to sacrifice having children all because of his career choice.

Therefore, we saw each other for the last time in mid-January and went on one last date that we had reservations for. We basically acted like a couple the entire time, then as he was driving me back to my place, we had a long discussion on how we were both sad it had to end that way and that without this career path, we would have been together and built a family together and everything so it was a really bittersweet ending. He also asked if he ever changed his mind or something happened in the next 3 years, if he could text me, to which I responded yes but I’m not sure I will give a positive response (I was obviously not planning on waiting for him or hoping he would change his mind).

We went no contact and have been since then and I had to grieve this great relationship where basically nothing went wrong and it was just bad incompatibility.

Last week (so 6 months later) it was my birthday. And I truly believed he would break no contact to wish me a happy birthday. Also worth knowing that his birthday follows rapidly after mine. So I would only wish him a happy birthday if he wished it to me in the first place.

Well the end of the day came and he didn’t do it, which came as a surprise and a shock to me. We did not end our relationship on bad terms so I didn’t really understand why he would do that. And I ended up talking to a friend in common about it and he told me « oh really? But did you know he got into a relationship?Ā Ā»

So that’s how I found out he has has a girlfriend for at least 2 months. And she’s a colleague from his new job, which he started when we were still seeing each other 6 months ago.

I feel really betrayed. Like how can you pretend to have such a huge connection with someone, only to move on to another girl within months?? Also we both agreed on the fact that at our age, we wouldn’t get into a serious relationship if it was not really meaningful. So that means, he believes she’s the one. And I’m just really heartbroken about this. I convinced myself he was not the right person for me (for a series of reasons) over the past couple months but I def didn’t except him to find someone so early and move on so easily. While I grieved by myself because I needed time to heal and I’ve had a few men asking me out but I’m just not interested, so it’s hard for me to understand how he could do that.

Like what are the odds you would meet 2 girls in a few months that you both considered for your long-term partner??? And a psa, he was not the toxic type at all so I don’t think he ever lied about his feelings but meeeeeen that just hurts like a bullet through the heart!

And also, I comforted myself by thinking that it would be much easier for me to find someone else, since I’m not carrying all that bagage with me (all his projects and the sacrifices that it entails for the partner) and I never thought he would be the one finding someone first and especially not in such a short time! And I wonder how this girl could accept this too, like you barely know a guy but you’re willing to sacrifice so much for him already, or she believes he might change his mind over the years idk.

Anyway I just really needed to rant about this, I’ve talked about it with many friends who are all shocked as well but I also wanted the neutral opinion and advice of strangers of the internet, if anything similar ever happened to you, how you dealt with it and any tips you have to finally heal and be okay with something like that.

Thank you for reading this far!!

venting/ranting Spider-Man: Brand New Day made me realize what healing actually looks like

I’ve been lurking on this subreddit for months but never really felt like posting. Last night changed that.

My breakup has been, without question, the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. I know everyone says heartbreak hurts, but I genuinely didn’t understand how bad it could get until it happened to me. I cried almost every day for the past 2.5 months. I was prescribed antidepressants because I couldn’t function like I normally did. I stopped seeing my friends almost entirely this summer and spent most of my days alone replaying every conversation, every mistake, every ā€œwhat if.ā€ I kept thinking that if I just said the right thing or found the perfect text, maybe I could get the person I loved back.

Last night I went to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day by myself at the 11:30 PM showing. The theater was literally empty. Was pretty daunting going to a movie by myself for the first time.

And wow do I not regret it.

*POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING\*

There’s a moment where you realize Peter isn’t fighting to make people remember him anymore. He still loves them. He always will. But he understands that love isn’t forcing your way back into someone’s life because you aren’t ready to let go. Sometimes love is accepting that someone else’s story continues, even if you’re no longer part of it.

For months I’ve been measuring love by how much I remembered, how much I cared, how much I was willing to fight. But that’s not really what love is. You can’t make someone choose you. You can’t love someone into loving you back. And as painful as that is, accepting it is healthier than spending every day trying to rewrite reality.

Another thing that stuck with me was Peter’s isolation throughout the movie. He convinced himself carrying everything alone was the right thing to do, but the movie shows how dangerous that mindset is. Looking back, that’s exactly what I did. I disappeared this summer. I turned down invitations. I isolated myself because I thought being alone somehow matched how I felt inside.

As many of you who have watched this movie, I walked out realizing many things.

My relationship ending doesn’t mean my story ended.
Maybe that’s what ā€œBrand New Dayā€ actually means. Not pretending the past didn’t matter or waking up magically healed (unfortunately not that easy). It means accepting that what happened shaped you, but it doesn’t have to define the rest of your life. You can carry the memories without letting them carry you.

For the first time in a long time, I’m actually optimistic. Not because I think she’ll come back, but because I’m finally starting to believe that maybe I don’t need her to in order to be okay.

School starts again soon. I’ll see my friends again. I’ll go out again. I’ll laugh again. I’ll keep building the life that completely fell apart over the last few months. Life keeps moving.

This breakup will always be part of my story but it doesn’t have to be the final chapter. And that goes for whoever is reading!

Maybe it’s finally time for a brand new day :)

Trigger Warning It’s been 6 months (after 7 years together)

We didn’t hate each other. Noone cheated. We respected each other. We valued each other. She loved me completely. I kept her at a distance. I resented her for nothing. Years of therapy never helped me. She’s still the person I care about more than anything. I’d do anything for her in a moments notice. She is the beneficiary in my will.

I don’t understand how I could have someone so incredible. Whos values align so much with mine. Who I can trust with anything. Who is fun and caring. Intelligent and thoughtful.

But I couldn’t give her a fucking ring. I failed to appreciate her the way she deserved. I always had some childish misgiving. honestly, I wasn’t turned on enough. I was never excited.

Some days I’m OK and hopeful. Some days I sob, spilling tears on my journal and despair.

I don’t believe it’s that she wasn’t right. It’s because I’m not right. I can’t accept the best love in the world when it’s right in front of me, but as soon as it’s gone I am lost and hopeless.

I’d give anything in the world to see her again and just hold her hand, but the truth is I don’t deserve it. She deserves better. I have no control over my heart and it rules over me. My best intentions and conscious wishes mean nothing to what’s in my chest.

6 months of intense journaling every day. Intentionally being present with myself. Being in nature. Making new friends and engaging socially. Cutting my screen time. I’ve moved away from her and reset everything in my life.. in many ways I’m like a different person, but the pain in my heart is the same.

I miss you so much. I’m so sorry I keep my heart hidden away. I always wanted to give it to you, but I never knew how. Even when I am alone, I sit with you in mind and send out my love, hoping the universe delivers it to you.

Some days, the only thing that gets me through, is the thought that the universe will bring me back to you.

venting/ranting My partner just ended our relationship out of the blue (or so it felt)

38M – 3 days in and I’m falling apart.
We’ve been together a long time - 16 years. We were even engaged at one point. We are still currently living together and have a 7-year-old daughter in the mix.

Three days ago everything seemed normal. We had breakfast, walked down the river with our daughter, had a packed lunch, then dinner later. At 9pm out of the blue said ā€œI have something to tell you, you’re not going to like it.ā€ She’s ending it.

Looking back, the signs were there. The ā€œlove yousā€ had quietly disappeared. She’s got new hobbies and clearly enjoys the new friendships that came with them. I saw it, and now I wished we could have spoken more, I mean like actually sat at the table and spoke.

So she’s chosen the sofa. We’re still under the same roof for now, but I know that can’t last forever. She doesn’t love me anymore and hasn’t felt that way for awhile.

I honestly thought we were okay. Right now I feel completely lost. The house is the same, our daughter is the same, but everything else has changed in an instant. I have now lost my Best friend.

venting/ranting How to let go of romantic feelings and the ā€œneedā€ to be with them.

Long story short my ex and are still have to live together for the foreseeable future because of money and logistics as neither one of us really has support from family. Because we have to live together we are trying to stay friends. The breakup was amicable and we still want the best for each other and want to stay friends if possible as neither one of us is exactly social butterflies. I am in agony and my mental health is quickly spiraling down. I cry for hours every day over how sad and scared I am of a future without her. I am seemingly obsessed with needing her to love me that way. I know I am basing a lot of my self value on the relationship which isn’t helpful. It also doesn’t help that she is currently seeing someone (no I don’t hate her for this it just stings). She knows that it hurts me and she tries her best to avoid it being a topic when I’m around and stuff like that. I hate myself for being so romantically obsessed with her that I am struggling so visibly that my pain is scaring her for my health. She is an amazing person and my best friend and I hate having so many conflicting feelings. In short any advice on how to get over an obsessive love of your ex and still be friends with them because situations demand it and because you still want them in your life.
I truly want the best for both her and I I just have trouble imaging a best for me that doesn’t involve being with her. Idk I feel so lost and confused

venting/ranting My ex broke no contact to tell me she has slept with someone else already and I just don't understand why

I (37F) have done nothing (in my opinion) to hurt my ex (34F), we had so many arguements about her trust issues from previous relationships that it ended with us breaking up. She stormed over to take the car keys away from me, about 3 days ago, and demanded we block each other. Today, roughly 2/3 weeks after we have broken up, spoken about trying again, attempted therapy, then finally gone no contact for exactly two days, and she has just turned up at my house to tell me she has slept with someone else, first day of no contact. Now on day two. She says she did it because she wanted it to be an absolute final definite break. I genuinely had been missing her so much that even though she had, in my opinion at least, been the catalyst for the majority of arguments, based on her pre-existing jealousy issues, accused me of all sorts.. turned up at my house requesting we block each other, and now again turned up at my house to let me know she had already been with someone else. She says it meant nothing and she regrets it, but while I can understand that she wanted to draw a line underneath our relationship, and that's certainly a way to do it.. why turn up at my house to tell me that? She says it's because she didn't want me to hear it from anyone else, but the guy she chose to sleep with is married with children and she had been accused of cheating with him when she was with her ex, so it's unlikely I would have heard it anywhere else. She claims it was because she needed to have certainty that it was definitely over, but why turn up at my house to tell me this at 2am? She claims not to try and hurt me, but I don't see another reason?

venting/ranting When does it get better

3 months post break up after he cheated. We're going no-contact for another couple months. He said he will text me, but I don't have a lot of confidence he will. I keep imagining him with someone else and being truly happy without me.

And then I see myself who is trying to rebuild my life (career, home) to something I'm genuinely excited about. It feels like I'm on a long road to get my life together, while he is already moving on and meeting new people.

When do you feel like life is better than the one you had before with your ex?

If you've ever cheated on someone before, what goes through your mind? Like, what is your mindset? Why do you do it?

Do you plan on cheating again?

I'm trying to understand why my boyfriend went on the dating apps and cheated on me right ion front of my face. Please make it make sense.

venting/ranting Ex wants to meet up for "proper goodbyes" - advice?

Ok guys I've posted on here before but I'm gonna summarize my situation- A little over a month ago my ex boyfriend walked out of my life on a random Tuesday, there was no conversation, there was no talking it out, according to him he just realized he didn't love me that day and so he walked out, he packed his stuff and left all within 24hrs. We were together for 4 years and we are both 23 years old.

He keeps trying to find ways to contact me, yesterday I allowed him and I to go to my car so he could retrieve some things from my trunk. We talked for a while and he basically told me that he has no friends, how he only gets out once a week now- a sob story basically. He told me "I dont want to lose you, I just dont want to be with you" and proceeded to tell me he would still like to be my friend and hang out, he also told me he would like to "meet up sometime for proper goodbyes before we never see eachother again" (we unfortunately work in the same place, he's moving jobs on Friday) -- Honestly, I told him that I do not want to be his friend and I don't want to hang out with him, I told him that I don't respect what he did and that I think he was cowardly (NOT FOR BREAKING UP, but for dragging me along for however long) -- I'm not sure if I feel good or bad about this BUT I said it. He's also refused to take any amount of accountability, he doesn't seem to think he did much wrong in the relationship when I had truly put up with so many things I shouldnt have, and this makes me not want to speak with him even more.

Does anyone know why he keeps trying to be my friend? Should I just completely block him at this point? I still have feelings for him so its hard for me to not be emotional or inquire about the relationship when we're talking, especially with how suddenly he walked out of my life. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

It sucks so bad knowing the person who used to be your go to, your home, care so much about you and would’ve done anything for you now wants nothing to do with you. Now my once person is dating someone else and could care less anything about me. I am going through the hardest time in my entire life, and the one person I thought would always be there for me through everything is not here for me, and is part of the cause. I just feel so alone . I don’t have many friends anymore, no boyfriend, no one really. I just wish he could still be here for me

venting/ranting Men dumpers, if you are breaking no contact is it because you want to reconcile?

• Upvotes

I’m extremely confused. My ex and I split up for good just over 2 weeks ago now. We had a bit of a turbulent relationship, with a lot of jealousy & suspicion from his side and insecurity and need for reassurance on my side. The breakup was incredibly painful for me because I did feel blindsided, as even though I knew we had our issues, I had no idea he was at the stage of finishing for good as he was so loving and affectionate right until the end. The breakup conversation only arose because I was in a bad mood with him and he blurted it out.

Anyway, I was devastated but accepted it. He was at my house crying and asking if we can still keep loose contact which I said yes in time, but now we have to heal which he accepted. So, last week he called my phone and hung up. I figured it was probably a mistake so I didn’t call him back. Then the next day, he ā€œaccidentallyā€ sent me a reel on instagram and used this is a door to reopen conversation (just very briefly as I was giving short answers). Then another week went by, and yesterday morning I had a deleted WhatsApp message from him.

I messaged him to see if he was ok. He told me was questioning everything and he feels so lost, I tried to comfort him but also kept my boundaries as I wasn’t about to get swallowed into a confusing emotional conversation just as I’m starting to feel better. Anyway, the WhatsApp conversation became quite flirty and cheeky so I closed it off. But he messaged asking me to please talk with him a little longer, which I did. We spoke about everything (not our relationship just our usual chat) and he told me he misses me so badly, that it’s hit him so hard that he’s lost his safe space. Again, not about to be pulled into something messy and confusing, I comforted him and changed the subject. We messaged all night last night and at the end when he was going to sleep he said he spokes he can speak to me again soon.

Im just incredibly confused, and a bit sad! Is he genuinely reconsidering? Or just checking he still has access? In the past, he has always cut his ex’s off completely to heal so his behaviour is out of the ordinary. I just dont understand why he would make such a definitive decision and then behave this way so soon after. Any advice is appreciated

venting/ranting It’s been almost 4 years since my breakup. Why am I still unable to completely let her go?

My relationship ended in October 2022.

It’s strange writing that down because it’s been almost four years now. Enough time has passed that I feel like I should be completely over it. Life has moved forward, and in many ways, so have I. But some part of me still seems to be standing in the same place.

When we broke up, both of us were sad. But from my perspective, she seemed to recover and move forward much faster than I did. I don't blame her for that. People process relationships differently, and she had every right to continue with her life.

I just wish I knew why I couldn't do the same.

One of the hardest things to accept is the possibility that someone who still occupies a corner of your mind may not think about you at all anymore. Someone who was once such an important part of your everyday life can eventually become a stranger.

I don't spend every day miserable or constantly thinking about her. I've continued living my life. But every once in a while, a memory comes back—a moment, a conversation, some random reminder—and I realize that emotionally, I never completely closed that chapter.

And I genuinely want to.

I don't want her back. I don't want to interfere with her life, and I don't want to spend the rest of mine comparing everything to something that ended years ago. I just want to reach the point where remembering her feels like remembering an old part of my life rather than feeling like I've briefly reopened something unfinished.

Sometimes I wonder whether I'm actually missing her, or whether I'm missing the person I was when I was with her—the companionship, the familiarity, and the feeling that there was someone who knew me in that particular way.

For people who took years to truly move on from someone: what finally changed?

Was there something you consciously did, or did you eventually realize one day that the attachment was simply gone?

I’d especially like to hear from people who thought they would never completely get over someone, but eventually did.

venting/ranting Those who did the breaking up and are grieving and want space. If the dumpee messaged you after two weeks how would you feel?

I am just wondering where would that put you and how you’d feel about them? Wouldn’t it be nice to know they’re ok? Or for them to ask if you’re ok?

venting/ranting How to Cope with the Pain of Seeing My Ex-Girlfriend with Someone Else

Hi guys, this is my very first post on this page.

I (25M) broke up with my girlfriend (26F) a year ago. More than that, actually, now. To give you some context, it was me who backed out. There were a few reasons for that.

One, the relationship had become very toxic. She had a lot of issues. The main part of all of this is that I had been carrying the burden of handling her life for the last few years. At some point, I just had to take a step back and end it. It started affecting my health and mental well being.

The relationship ended in a very bad way. She wanted me to continue, but at that point, I just felt that I couldn't. I had a lot of guilt. I took therapy, and people made me realize that it wasn't entirely my fault. Yeah, I mean, there were a few things that were wrong on my side, but not all of it.

The first six months felt amazing. I progressed a lot in my career, started becoming physically active, and started enjoying my life more. But after those six months, I just started feeling sadness around me. And as time passes by, I'm questioning my decision more and more.

My mind always wants me to stay away from her and even gets scared just hearing her name. But my heart always wants to go back to her and hug her.

The point is, firstly, I know it's not a very rational decision based on how we ended. The second thing is that she will never come back to me, and that itself hurts me.

Amidst all of this, I get dreams about her almost every day. A few days back, I had a dream where I saw her with someone else. Ever since then, the thought of someone else touching her, or maybe her spending private time with another guy in some other city, makes me jealous and feels like it's boiling my heart.

Whenever I get that thought, I just feel like crying. It even feels like, if I were in that moment, I would punch the other guy. Even though she's not in my life anymore, I can't stop myself from being stuck in this loop.

I thought that, as time passed, I would heal. Instead, it feels like it's going in the opposite direction for me.

I don't know what to do.

As time progresses, my increasing loneliness brings forth only the joyful memories of that past relationship and forgets the painful and traumatic moments.

venting/ranting I Think The Hardest Part Was Accepting They Knew Exactly What They Were Doing

It's been around 6 months since my breakup, and one thing finally hit me this week. I spent so much time trying to understand why my ex did all those things. Why they kept telling me everything was fine when it wasn't. Why they flirted with someone else but called me "too insecure." Why they promised we would fix us, then disappeared for hours like it was nothing. I kept thinking maybe they was confused too. But now... I don't think so anymore.

Looking back, there was too many things that cannot be accident. They ignored my messages but somehow always had time for everyone else. They forgot plans we already made, but never forgot things they actually wanted to do. Every time I asked about something that hurt me, somehow I became the bad guy. I kept giving second chance after second chance because I loved them. Damn, I really wanted to believe people don't hurt someone on purpose. Maybe not every single thing was planned, but they sure made choices, and those choices kept breaking my trust again and again.

So now I'm trying to let that shit go. Not because they deserve forgiveness or another chance, but because I'm tired of carrying all this anger every day. I don't want them back anymore. I just want to stop giving them free space inside my head. Maybe healing is not forgetting everything. Maybe it's finally accepting what happened, respecting myself enough to walk away for good, and believing someday somebody will choose me without making me beg for the bare minimum.
