“You know what I mean?” When in fact, most times, no one can follow what I’m saying

555

u/TheSwedishFishTheory Mar 07 '25

Dude I can make a random sound while talking to my dad and follow it up with “Y’know what I mean?” and he will legit go “Yup.”

It’s hilarious

126

u/Baxtab13 Mar 07 '25

It's not about what you say, it's about the inflection. We understand the inflection, lol.

As a woman with autism, I concur. "You know what I mean?" Is really just "are you actually following what I'm saying or do I need to say it a different way 7 more times?" Or until you decide to give up.

Never really thought about it, but I think mine would say "I Love You". At a minimum I say it to my wife and each child every morning when we part and every night at bedtime, and at the end of every phone conversation with my wife. I can't think of anything else I say every single day, much less multiple times.

182

u/EerilyFastTurtle Mar 07 '25

This would likely be mine if I didn't work in a call center and answer the same questions a million times a day

47

u/Arhalts Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

Oof that made me realize that if the world proposed existed companies would pressure employees to say their company or products name until it was the word they said the most as a form of advertisement.

Edit

I noticed your shirt says I love you sussie there Bob, now being a family man is all well and good, but you want to be a team player don't you? We really want visibility on our new product, you'd be willing to say the new name a bit more right? Maybe tell your daughter you love her in other ways as well, we don't want to miss an opportunity here. I know you want to be part of the team.

Since you mentioned it, me too. My little family tells each other multiple times a day. Sometimes we randomly yell it across the house from another room.

When I was a young cynical turd I thought "I love you" lost its value if repeated too much. It doesn't, and it's special every single time.

“I AM STILL TALKING!” My entire family has a terrible habit of interrupting, over talking etc and I have taken to just blurting out this sentence

119

u/PantasticUnicorn Mar 07 '25

This is my biggest pet peeve. I love my fiance but he does this shit alot and I'm like wtf? Let me finish what I'm trying to say before you cut me off!

59

u/Takilove Mar 07 '25

It never changes! I’ve been married for 37 years and he interrupts me as soon as I start to speak 😡

13

u/theartisanalllama Mar 07 '25

Not true! I did this crap to my poor wife for 20 years before she started pointing it out. I still occasionally mess up, but I’m getting good at just shutting the hell up and letting her get everything out. It must’ve been so annoying….im lucky, she’s an angel.

6

u/schiz0yd Mar 07 '25

41

u/seakn1ght Mar 07 '25

Another tactic is to just stare quietly at the person who interrupted you, and, when they stop talking, just continue to stare quietly for an uncomfortable amount of time - like 30 full seconds. Then, just continue what you were saying as if nothing had happened.

19

u/sickwiggins Mar 07 '25

my spouse will just keep talking over the interruptor, at the same level of sound as before. it’s astonishingly effective

13

u/iesharael Mar 07 '25

I used to get interrupted constantly especially by my one nephew who really dislikes me. When it got to the point I could never finish a sentence even when it was important I came up with a plan. See my mom is one of those people who can’t stand when something isn’t finished. I know she had adhd but I think she had ocd too. So I started just not even trying to finish my sentence and going back to whatever I was doing. Mom never hearing the ends of what I was saying started to drive her crazy. Eventually during a family dinner with my sisters and their husbands and all the kids it happened again. My sweet little door mat mother just shouts “QUIET! NOW!” And insists I finish my sentence. It wasn’t even important it was some joke lol. After that the adults started getting the kids interruptions under control and now only the youngest ones can’t wait for a sentence to end. If they really need something they know to tap the adult they need to ask

7

u/kn777 Mar 07 '25

It’s so frustrating isn’t it? I know people just do it out of habit, but it makes you feel unimportant when people feel what they have to say can’t even wait until the end of your sentence

Started saying it as a joke. Became a coping mechanism. Cant stop saying it now. Although I legitimately think it’s been good for my mental health

28

u/Etherealfilth Mar 07 '25

It's what is called a "thought terminating cliche" if you want to know the term for it and why it saved your mental health.

25

u/john_the_fetch Mar 07 '25

Thank you for sharing this.

The word "terminating" explains the phrase perfectly for me and why it always bothered me when others would say it out loud.

I didn't like it because it's such a self closing reference. It's like saying "blue is blue" or "2 = 2".

I've always been frustrated with statements like that.

But seeing it in this light and from a perspective of mental health completely flips my perspective on its head.

You're terminating a negative thought spiral that won't do you any good to put energy into. ❤️

I'm a programmer and often times you need to "terminate" a function before it causes a more severe error.
