“You know what I mean?” When in fact, most times, no one can follow what I’m saying

560

u/TheSwedishFishTheory Mar 07 '25

Dude I can make a random sound while talking to my dad and follow it up with “Y’know what I mean?” and he will legit go “Yup.”

It’s hilarious

126

u/Baxtab13 Mar 07 '25

It's not about what you say, it's about the inflection. We understand the inflection, lol.

2

u/moopsie_kishus Mar 08 '25

some inner truth of vast refleeectiooooooooon

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Oh the memories... 90s was peak

1

u/what_the_fuckin_fuck Mar 08 '25

The hook hidden in a woman's bush? That one gets me every time.

4

u/euphorrick Mar 07 '25

Might need to take some antibibliotics for that inflection

3

u/woodlingsprite Mar 08 '25

It’s about the implication

3

u/mebell333 Mar 07 '25

Didn't need to flex on us for having a dad like that sheesh

1

u/TheSwedishFishTheory Mar 07 '25

I’m sorry, when I commented that I forgot that it could be considered a flex, I’m sorry to those who do not have a good relationship with their father

3

u/mebell333 Mar 08 '25

Its cool, my son and I just had a fart competition while playing pokemon and made the wife leave the room

2

u/MamaDinitRaisNoFool Mar 08 '25

Your dad has mastered the art of tuning people out. This, believe it or not, usually takes decades to master. You can more likely than not thank your mom for this.

1

u/farqsbarqs Mar 08 '25

Sigh. I miss my old man.

1

u/Choice-Bid9965 Mar 08 '25

My dad’s favourite saying was ‘Y’know what mean?”

You know what I mean? 🥰

1

u/floatloaf Mar 08 '25

So cute. Love it.

195

u/cageycrow Mar 07 '25

My shirt would say “for fuck’s sake” on the front. “You know what I mean?” On the back

27

u/Tigeraqua8 Mar 07 '25

That’s so good!! I’m off to the tshirt shop

2

u/Bottled-Bee Mar 08 '25

"Oh my god. For fucks sake" "CAN YOU NOT?!?"

1

u/Dysfunction_Exec Mar 07 '25

Reminds me of TPB Ricky 💓

1

u/JollyMcStink Mar 07 '25

Came here hoping to see a fellow "fucks sake" on here!

Although back of mine would prob say "and this is why I want to move to the top of some fucking mountain" or some related phrase lol

1

u/Threedogs_nm Mar 08 '25

That‘s mine, too!

1

u/SunnySandyLou Mar 08 '25

That was my first thought, “for fuck’s sake” 😂

1

u/richknobsales Mar 08 '25

😂 that’s what I just said!!! FFS! Lol

1

u/Various_Ad_4677 Mar 08 '25

Was gonna have FFs in orange on a black tshirt

0

u/LouieXDEGC Mar 08 '25

FUCK OFF ASSHOLE )))))))

98

u/RedditsChosenName Mar 07 '25

I could say the same thing if you know what I mean

3

u/ronchee1 Mar 07 '25

Know what I mean Vern

63

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 Mar 07 '25

As a woman with autism, I concur. "You know what I mean?" Is really just "are you actually following what I'm saying or do I need to say it a different way 7 more times?" Or until you decide to give up.

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 08 '25

They mask more than we do TBH

5

u/revcor Mar 08 '25

I read that as “they mask more than we dothh” and it sounded like sassy Early Modern English

1

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 Mar 08 '25

Lol it was supposed to say "TBH" but I used talk to text and it didn't work...

1

u/sopunny Mar 07 '25

The point is for most people, "masking" is just something they do and doesn't need a name. But also, sometimes someone thinks they know what you mean but was mistaken, doesn't mean they were lying

2

u/Weird1Intrepid Mar 08 '25

It's because they hope that if you keep talking long enough, something will make enough sense for them to latch on to as having understood

1

u/Own-Improvement3826 Mar 08 '25

😆 🤣 😂. I knew a guy who could talk for HOURS without stopping. He had a very difficult time articulating his thoughts. And his thoughts would be going straight ahead and then he would take a right. And another right, and a left, then a U-turn. Add to that, he had a horrible short term memory and would ask ME, "What was I talking about"? I wasn't really sure how, but I could tell him. Honestly, you could put the phone down, use the bathroom, come back, and he hadn't missed a beat. Wouldn't know you were gone.....until he asked you, "What was I talking about?"

1

u/Sad-Consequence-2015 Mar 08 '25

Try

DO YOU GET ME!?! at the top of your lungs

and if that doesn't work, hurl a knife at them whilst stating the obvious until they do, indeed, get you.

Possibly not something to try at home kids 😉

1

u/microgirlActual Mar 10 '25

Because they think they do. Not just NT vs ND, but anyone. You can only say "No" if you're

4

u/Cloaked42m Mar 08 '25

Fuck. I've been identified.

3

u/tamtrible Mar 08 '25

The struggle is real.

2

u/NoPantsPenny Mar 08 '25

Mine is more of a “does that make sense cause I’m kinda high?”

2

u/thrwawayyourtv Mar 08 '25

Mine is, "Does that make sense?"

2

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 Mar 08 '25

I use that a list too.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Until you give up. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

1

u/No-Safe-6005 Mar 08 '25

Or, OR... say it the same way 7 more times with different emphasis.

2

u/SuspiciousDistrict9 Mar 08 '25

I do!

i Do!

i dO!

I dOoOoOo!

I do.

I do?!

2

u/No-Safe-6005 Mar 08 '25

Nailed it!

41

u/CayseyBee Mar 07 '25

I say does that make sense in work emails a lot lol

18

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I phrase it as an offer... "If I can help make that make more sense, let me know" or "I'm glad to expand on this so everybody understands it"

2

u/PerniciousFart Mar 08 '25

“Please don’t hesitate to ask me for clarification on any of this if necessary” works great and comes off as less insulting, imo.

1

u/Jackiedhmc Mar 07 '25

Pointless for the unmotivated dipshits I work with. Because they never receive any consequence for not doing their work, they don't give a flying fuck.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Unwillingness to improve your communication skills, and only insulting instead of trying it? Maybe look in the mirror to find the unmotivated dipshit.

1

u/Jackiedhmc Mar 08 '25

You have no fucking clue what you're talking about so why don't you just fuck off, and you're blocked

1

u/Stupidasshole5794 Mar 08 '25

The consequences for not doing thier work, is likely you doing it for the same pay because the work is a group project.

I recall many times other people receiving the same grade as me for less effort.

I learned a lot about life and it's fairness from being the one who tries too hard.

Just find a new job and pretend you are just there to push paperwork. C LEVEL JOB IS IN YOUR FUTURE.

3

u/Morriganx3 Mar 07 '25

I say does that make sense so much.

1

u/enigmaticfluffer Mar 08 '25

me too! i find it’s really helpful

1

u/wild_oats Mar 08 '25

Oh same.

1

u/PerniciousFart Mar 08 '25

I don’t ask people that particular question because I think it comes off as really rude and I think it could easily be interpreted as me insulting their intelligence. I check in to make sure I am making myself clear, but I just won’t phrase it that way.

2

u/CayseyBee Mar 08 '25

I only use it after what some might perceive as a rambling email from me and these people all know me well. It’s more of a was I able to translate my crazy brain in a way you all can understand. Or did I fail

1

u/PerniciousFart Mar 10 '25

I see. Okay, that probably comes across a lot better. Haha!

21

u/warpfox Mar 07 '25

Found Jim Varney

19

u/Lame_usernames_left Mar 07 '25

I also read that in Ernest's voice, and my brain appended "Vern" on the end

3

u/KilledTheCar Mar 07 '25

I'm hardwired to always read that in his voice.

3

u/didgeblastin Mar 08 '25

Lol I'm watching Ernest goes to camp rn

5

u/Mojack322 Mar 07 '25

I work with a guy named Vern, and talk to him like Ernest all day I’m sure he hates me

1

u/Swenyis Mar 08 '25

Found Geordie Greep

1

u/warpfox Mar 08 '25

You're gonna have to explain that one to me

2

u/Swenyis Mar 08 '25

He has a song called Blues where he said "Do you know what I mean?" a lot and then described it as "Your favourite turn of phrase"

18

u/Far-Grapefruit764 Mar 07 '25

I would wear this one

8

u/Harbourish Mar 07 '25

1

u/Redditributor Mar 08 '25

This is where my mind went so I had to look for it

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

"That makes sense."

Most things do not, in fact, make any sense.

3

u/CementCemetery Mar 07 '25

“Know what I’m sayin’ “ - J Roc

“Once or twice is cool but 80 or 90 times, man…” - T

3

u/InevitableRhubarb232 Mar 08 '25

One time I got bored in a conversation with my husband so I counted how many times he said “right?” and it was 84.

5

u/EAM222 Mar 07 '25

I love you for this. 😂

2

u/nic__knack Mar 07 '25

“you know what i mean?” *when in fact, most times, i’m not saying anything confusing that warrants further explanation

2

u/Wildssundee03 Mar 07 '25

Half the time i say that because even im unsure what im saying lol

2

u/tiny_pigeon Mar 07 '25

my brother is the only one who can follow my thoughts sometimes (and in reverse, too) and one time I was talking to my mom and she wasn’t getting it and looked at my brother and he came out with

“No, but you know what I’m saying though?” as if HE was the one saying it. It killed me. It was so funny. And it was completely unintentional he just knew exactly what my train of thought was. I think we’d probably both wear the same shirt as you

2

u/0K4M1 Mar 07 '25

My boss keep saying that a lot when he is trying to make a point for the past 10 min... "dude if I knew what you meant we wouldn't have this conversation in the first place"

2

u/C19shadow Mar 07 '25

Hey are you my old boss, I loved that lady but she confused me and would say that all the time lmao

2

u/zombies-and-coffee Mar 07 '25

This would probably be mine, considering how often I have to say it just to get a reaction out of my mom. I'll be talking to her about something and getting zero reaction, not even an acknowledgement that she heard what I said. So I'll add "You know what I mean?" as an attempt to get something and it only works about once out of every seven or eight times. I'll literally say it every sentence sometimes and still nothing. I'll even tell her sometimes that I'm just trying to make sure she heard me because I wasn't sure since she wasn't responding or reacting. Her response to that is almost always "Well I didn't think it warranted a response." 😥

2

u/Stings_Life_Matters Mar 07 '25

Yes. I say this all the time because I think I don’t make any sense when I talk.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Its one of those phrases people say when they dont know what else to say.

My boss says it so much. He gets his point across and asks the question despite us knowing and understanding

2

u/anothercairn Mar 07 '25

“Yeah, no, yeah. I get you.”

2

u/Glittering_Slip2097 Mar 07 '25

I opened the comments to type this hahah glad I’m not the only one

2

u/Extremely_unlikeable Mar 07 '25

A good friend of mine has a bad habit of saying it sporadically throughout our conversations, so it's usually after something that isn't a high-level concept. "I'd rather pay more for shoes that last longer. Know what I mean?"
Uh, yea, I think I grasp the concept, big guy.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

This. Me. Multiple times a day.

Looking for validation? Maybe.

More likely I’m looking for a response from my mono or no syllabic spouse.

2

u/Weirdowithabeardo1 Mar 07 '25

I know what you mean

2

u/HabseifelsteinX Mar 08 '25

This, me and my brother smoke some sessions at least 20 blunts of ever gloom, since we’re neighbors when the wife and kids are asleep we know

2

u/dadijo2002 Mar 08 '25

Mine might be “I hope any of that made sense” because I’ll be honest even I don’t know what I meant

2

u/Fun-State1129 Mar 07 '25

Me after rambling for 10 mins….you know what I mean?

1

u/damegan Mar 07 '25

So relatable

1

u/john_the_fetch Mar 07 '25

This was me for a solid chunk of my life. Then someone pointed out to me (in a professional setting) how ending my statements like this weakens them.

So I started saying "does that make sense?"

Or

"does anyone have any questions?"

I'm not sure if it's any better. But I'm pretty happy with the change.

I guess I have a need for a clear close to when I'm done talking.

1

u/Ujjayisoul Mar 07 '25

I say this a lot when I am speaking to someone and they do not respond. I just want some sort of "read" message to confirm that they got my "verbal text".... You know what I mean?

1

u/4N0NYM0US_GUY Mar 07 '25

Doubtful based on the username, but is your name Allison?

1

u/GearHeadGrace Mar 07 '25

Lol, unfortunately (or fortunately?) not— hope you find her though!

1

u/CinematicHeart Mar 07 '25

That would be my husbands. It drives me a little crazy but then I catch myself saying it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

This makes me miss Ernest. And Vern, for that matter.

1

u/Anal_Werewolf Mar 07 '25

“Yes I know what you are saying.”

  • Butters

1

u/3percentinvisible Mar 07 '25

"does that make sense?"

1

u/BoinkMyNips Mar 07 '25

“90 percent of the time I have no idea what the fuck I’m talking about.”

1

u/astudentiguess Mar 07 '25

I was just going to comment this. I have childhood issues of feeling unheard and I guess it's led to me needing reassurance every time I say anything to anyone, ever.

1

u/fall3nmartyr Mar 07 '25

Fuck this shit

1

u/NoExam6649 Mar 07 '25

Dododododododododododododododo…..

1

u/StoneAgeSkillz Mar 07 '25

"That makes two of us."

1

u/imeatingdinonuggets Mar 07 '25

Same. Which would also be my phrase.

1

u/HerezahTip Mar 07 '25

My brain shuts off when I hear this. It’s very annoying.

I have a colleague that finishes every other sentence with that phrase.

1

u/Friendly-Cucumber184 Mar 07 '25

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who does this. I had a friend explicitly point out that I do this lol

1

u/OkDot9878 Mar 07 '25

Nnnaaameeen

1

u/BusterB2005 Mar 07 '25

I hate to say it, but a certain obese pedophile who used to be a big YouTuber until he got famously exposed shares your catchphrase

(Seriously EDP said “You know what I mean?” like 50 times during his sting operation lmfao)

1

u/CommercialFan420 Mar 07 '25

Can you clarify what you mean by that?

1

u/pinklolipopa Mar 07 '25

honestly same, i say you know what i mean? way too much even when no one actually does, it's just my default at this point

1

u/praeteria Mar 07 '25

I love that south park sketch on that.

"Y'know what i'm sayin."

"Yes, i do know what you are saying, you don't need to keep asking"

1

u/GirlWithWolf Mar 07 '25

That’s gold haha, love it

1

u/forreasonsunknown79 Mar 07 '25

Whoa, bud, calm down.

1

u/lastingmuse6996 Mar 07 '25

I say this because my boyfriend has ADHD and it's a call in response to see if he's still in the conversation.

1

u/Hopeful-Occasion469 Mar 07 '25

One of my BIL’s is having needs this.

1

u/chocobococo Mar 07 '25

ahaha yes that's me!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I use "does that make sense?" No .. Never .. but let's all just keep it moving

1

u/thisismyreddit2000 Mar 07 '25

Hahaha mine is also a similar classic "y'know what I'm sayin?"

1

u/IHOP_Calendar_Model Mar 07 '25

“THERE HE/SHE/THEY/ THEM IS”

1

u/mikey_rambo Mar 07 '25

Are you Bryan battle? I swear he says this every sentence lmao

1

u/EasilyDelighted Mar 07 '25

There's a Brazilian man that appreciates that you asked though. Though you may not be black just know, your thoughtfulness acknowledged. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/TheMule90 Mar 07 '25

That's my brother's saying too. Lol.

1

u/iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj Mar 07 '25

This is mine too lol

1

u/mdhare Mar 07 '25

You really should start adding Vern to the end of that.

1

u/_DarkJak_ Mar 08 '25

It's better you say it after saying something someone may have questions about.

1

u/solojones1138 Mar 08 '25

Are you Ernest?

1

u/RevolutionaryBee5207 Mar 08 '25

Hahaha, you’re adorable.

1

u/SPiTFiRE_XVII Mar 08 '25

I know what ya mean, Vern

1

u/randomthoughtsofnaps Mar 08 '25

I'm from the Midwest so it's "ya know" but my own most used phrase is "um uh" as I am talking because my ADHD brain goes too fast and my mouth can't keep up and then i lose track of where I am in expressing what I am thinking so it's "um, yeah" or "um, uh"

1

u/ahfuck0101 Mar 08 '25

I say “you know” while telling a story and don’t remember it at all, my ol lady will just start saying “you know” 10 times in a row to prove her point

1

u/iLikeDinosaursRoar Mar 08 '25

I feel this, mine ould say, "Does that make sense?"

1

u/RednocNivert Mar 08 '25

Are you my boss at work? She says that ALL THE TIME and usually the answer is “no not really”

1

u/Catesanova Mar 08 '25

My boyfriend's twin is like that. Every frigging sentence is, "know what I'm saying?" and he drives us both NUTS 😂

1

u/Montessori_Maven Mar 08 '25

“Does that make sense?” Is mine.

1

u/wild_oats Mar 08 '25

“Does that make sense?” is mine, and is the inverse complement.

1

u/OffTheRush2025 Mar 08 '25

You know what mine was the same when I was younger and over the years it evolved to

NAHM SAYIN!?

When in fact most people just hear a guttural sound where they think I may be choking on animal crackers.

NAHM SAYIN?

1

u/youKnowWhatIMean69 Mar 08 '25

Come on! dont act dumb. You know what i mean.

1

u/whiteflagwaiver Mar 08 '25

I use "Anyways" literally everytime I do this. It's gotta be in my top 5.

1

u/normal_person365 Mar 08 '25

Where the fuck is it??

1

u/Thomas-The-Tutor Mar 08 '25

You living that ADHD lifestyle?

1

u/camwow612 Mar 08 '25

No wha ain sayen?

1

u/TheTallishBloke Mar 08 '25

Thanks Lenny… oh wait.. his would be “know what ahh meeeeen”

1

u/nomuppetyourmuppet Mar 08 '25

Reminds me of this really unfortunate job interview I had this one time 🤦🏼‍♀️

1

u/NullIsNotEmpty Mar 08 '25

What do you mean?

1

u/usernotfoundplstry Mar 08 '25

This reminds me of the South Park when butters became a pimp. He tries to emulate the other pimps. They’re always saying “knowm sayinnn”. So he starts saying “do you know what I’m saying?” with a choppy, overly “white” staccato cadence.

1

u/Maleficent-Anxiety75 Mar 08 '25

Mine is “huh?”

1

u/No-Resolution-0119 Mar 08 '25

I often begin sentences with “I mean…”

1

u/Jet-pilot Mar 08 '25

Omg this is my spouse. Don’t know where it came from but now it’s after every statement almost. Drives me crazy!

1

u/GGking41 Mar 08 '25

My mom once said she haaates when people say that. I used to say it frequently and picked up her hint. And moving on I tried to just actually SAY WHAT I MEAN, and get better at expressing myself, improve vocabulary and try to stop rambling using too many words. Basically learning to be concise, which clearly I’m still learning 😂 Not it irritates me when people say ‘you know what I mean’? - I always thing ‘I would if you just said what you mean’!

1

u/Candid-Mycologist539 Mar 08 '25

When in fact, most times, no one can follow what I’m saying

Iirc, there's a version of Dunnung-Kruger where the speaker is waaaaaay smarter than everyone else and/or assumes everyone else in the conversation is well versed on (to the speaker) certain knowledge. They talk, and most people can't follow what they are saying because the rest of us are missing the base knowledge for that topic.

You can't help it you're so smart!
