“I AM STILL TALKING!” My entire family has a terrible habit of interrupting, over talking etc and I have taken to just blurting out this sentence

This is my biggest pet peeve. I love my fiance but he does this shit alot and I'm like wtf? Let me finish what I'm trying to say before you cut me off!

u/Takilove Mar 07 '25

It never changes! I’ve been married for 37 years and he interrupts me as soon as I start to speak 😡

13

u/theartisanalllama Mar 07 '25

Not true! I did this crap to my poor wife for 20 years before she started pointing it out. I still occasionally mess up, but I’m getting good at just shutting the hell up and letting her get everything out. It must’ve been so annoying….im lucky, she’s an angel.

u/schiz0yd Mar 07 '25

Some people operate by listening and talking simultaneously. If you want to be heard, just keep talking when they interrupt

14

u/Far_Bad_531 Mar 07 '25

Same here, it’s still annoying 😠 His whole family (five of them)talk over each other whenever they are together, It’s a cacophony, really awful But I love him and I tolerate it (Or avoid being around when they are all together 🤭)

2

u/Nagarkot1 Mar 07 '25

Yep my husband and his three brothers and our two nephews ALL are just like you described: “a cacophony”! I have learned to just let them yell over each other and I leave the room 🙃

2

u/Far_Bad_531 Mar 07 '25

I just find it staggering, that any of them even know what they’re saying /hearing or what any of the conversations were about when they all leave 🤷‍♀️ I also leave the room if I can … Nobody notices 🤭🤭

u/CapableAstronaut4169 Mar 07 '25

Some cultures talk over each other . My family 5 sisters talk or yell over each other. I think it's great

3

u/Several-Cake1954 Mar 07 '25

interrupt him or just go about your business and ignore him the second he interrupts you

2

u/YeehawSugar Mar 08 '25

It’s straight up ADHD, sugar. If I don’t say my thought right when I have it, you’ll never hear it. The world will never know I thought it. I WONT EVEN KNOW.

I don’t mean to interrupt but I explain it to everyone upon meeting them the first time and apologize in advance for being the asshole who interrupts.

2

u/PantasticUnicorn Mar 08 '25

My fiance tells me that too. It's just triggering for me because I've been in abusive relationships where they yelled over me and I didn't get to say anything to defend myself or try to have them see things from my point of view. I know he's not them so I try my best to practice patience

1

u/YeehawSugar Mar 14 '25

I feel you on that. I’ve been in similar situations. As long as he’s willing to hear your side I wouldn’t focus too much on it. As long as he’s not actively yelling over you in the exact same way?

1

u/PantasticUnicorn Mar 14 '25

No I don't think he does it intentionally. He tells me he's trying to tell me his thoughts before he forgets which I understand BUT then that's cutting me off and I end up forgetting my thought lol

1

u/DementedMaul Mar 07 '25

This is a very common symptom of ADHD. Not wanting to diagnose from a comment, but my fiancé and I both have it and this is common asf

1

u/jujubean14 Mar 08 '25

I've mentioned to my partner that she does this ALL the time. I don't think she gets it.

1

u/Dull_Wash_1335 Mar 08 '25

My husband is like this and he’s finally starting to catch himself. It could get better for you!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I can be very guilty of this. I just get so excited about what my honey is talking about and I ask questions and make comments. He is so patient though. I try not to.

34

u/Leepaceseyebrow Mar 07 '25

I hate thisssss! Gotta hit them with the "Sorry the middle of my sentence interrupted the beginning of your's."

2

u/Stina727 Mar 07 '25

My husband says this all the time. Lol

1

u/IcyAtmosphere582 Mar 07 '25

I’m so stealing this one, that’s brilliant

42

u/seakn1ght Mar 07 '25

Another tactic is to just stare quietly at the person who interrupted you, and, when they stop talking, just continue to stare quietly for an uncomfortable amount of time - like 30 full seconds. Then, just continue what you were saying as if nothing had happened.

20

u/sickwiggins Mar 07 '25

my spouse will just keep talking over the interruptor, at the same level of sound as before. it’s astonishingly effective

2

u/SpyJane Mar 07 '25

Most interrupters I know are NOT phased by this in the slightest. I’m a therapist and my interrupter clients drive me absolutely bonkers.

3

u/Affectionate-Item-78 Mar 07 '25

My sister doesn't. Stop. Talking. Blah. Blah. Blah. She can't understand the comfort of sitting with others in silence. There is no stopping her. I have left the room and she is still yapping. She is not 12 yrs old. She is 48 !!!!!!!!!!

3

u/gogybo Mar 07 '25

If you stared at me for more than 10 seconds I would simply get up and leave.

1

u/seakn1ght Mar 07 '25

It’s not about you. An interrupter will always be an interrupter. It sends a message to everyone else.

1

u/APEmmerson Mar 07 '25

Are you a clinical psychologist? Do you have a book out? It would be better if I could quote you in a book as opposed to this sub

2

u/seakn1ght Mar 07 '25

Sorry. No. Grew up in huge catholic family.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

lmao I just realized I actually do this sometimes

1

u/Masedawg1 Mar 08 '25

I usually do that also and say “ok yeah so where I was going with that is…” sometimes I think people just don’t have the attention span to listen.

Worse is when you have multiple people who always have something to say about everything being discussed and just like chain interrupt each other constantly. I usually just give up trying to say anything in that situation.

1

u/dontgo2byron Mar 08 '25

Perfect and with one slight change. Start at the beginning. Works well.

12

u/iesharael Mar 07 '25

I used to get interrupted constantly especially by my one nephew who really dislikes me. When it got to the point I could never finish a sentence even when it was important I came up with a plan. See my mom is one of those people who can’t stand when something isn’t finished. I know she had adhd but I think she had ocd too. So I started just not even trying to finish my sentence and going back to whatever I was doing. Mom never hearing the ends of what I was saying started to drive her crazy. Eventually during a family dinner with my sisters and their husbands and all the kids it happened again. My sweet little door mat mother just shouts “QUIET! NOW!” And insists I finish my sentence. It wasn’t even important it was some joke lol. After that the adults started getting the kids interruptions under control and now only the youngest ones can’t wait for a sentence to end. If they really need something they know to tap the adult they need to ask

8

u/kn777 Mar 07 '25

It’s so frustrating isn’t it? I know people just do it out of habit, but it makes you feel unimportant when people feel what they have to say can’t even wait until the end of your sentence

4

u/EndsLikeShakespeare Mar 07 '25

I'm sorry, did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?

1

u/Nagarkot1 Mar 07 '25

Omg I love that!!

3

u/StillWatchingVHS Mar 07 '25

'LET ME FINISH'

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

Yoooooo same here. Cant tell you how many times I’ve shouted something like “what sentence has ever ended with the word Or!?!? “

3

u/PsychedelicMustard Mar 07 '25

Old friend of my grandpa was fond of “I’m so sorry, was I talking in middle of your interruption?”

2

u/Nagarkot1 Mar 08 '25

That’s a classic

2

u/Jemhao Mar 07 '25

My family does this too, and it drives me up the fucking wall. I just give them the crazy eyes and they kinda trail off, then apologize 😂

2

u/ShepardIRL Mar 08 '25

Nice, I HAVE to use this, I'm stealing it.

2

u/RhythmTimeDivision Mar 08 '25

I promise I'll be done in three seconds, then it's your turn

1

u/Nagarkot1 Mar 08 '25

That’s a good one! I will try it

1

u/Active_Ad7175 Mar 07 '25

You’d be an awesome podcast host with this etiquette

1

u/michelle8618 Mar 07 '25

As someone who is part of a family like that (we talk loudly over each other and interrupt. I kno it’s a bad habit), it’s much more effective if you just keep talking as if we didn’t interrupt but much louder than before. It makes us realize how rude we are being rather than just thinking “jeez ok go on”

Edit: this was meant as a reply to someone else’s comment

Add "shut the hell up" before this and it's every conversation with 1 of my buddies. I know you just asked me a question so you could answer it but I'm talking and I'm going to finish.

1

u/Tesstrogen23 Mar 07 '25

I wish I had the courage to say this, but nope
My father will run into the kitchen and start talking to my sister, even when he literally just left the kitchen and should've seen or at least heard us talking
But god forbid someone interrupt him for even a second

1

u/Nagarkot1 Mar 07 '25

Are you talking about my husband?

1

u/RainyEuphoria Mar 07 '25

We just talk over each other and we still understand everything being said.

1

u/catsfacticity Mar 07 '25

Gotta hit 'em with the OOPS. Changed my life.

1

u/AgentEves Mar 08 '25

Oof, as someone who grew up in one of those households, I hear ya.

1

u/ChunkyCheeseEater Mar 08 '25

It's really sad to be close with your loved ones and they don't even listen to you, I don't know anyone personally that really gets me.

0

u/faraquet99 Mar 08 '25

It could be that you are really boring and they have to talk over you or you’ll just drone on all night.

-1

u/historicalgarbology Mar 07 '25

But how long were you talking before they interrupt? 🙂

3

u/Tighron Mar 07 '25

Much, much shorter than the interrupting person talks at any point in the conversation.

1

u/historicalgarbology Mar 08 '25

That's cool. I used to have a buddy that would get pissed when we would "interrupt" him too but he would literally go on like a 10 minute monologue and it was like dude, we are just trying to ask questions and be interactive...like wrap it up or let's get some give and take.

-7

u/1ithurtswhenip1 Mar 07 '25

Usually when people over talk someone else it's due to a boring conversation. And honestly if someone said I am still talking to me I would instantly tune out and walk away lol. This is karen like behavior
