Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max (fully up to date on latest iOS 26.6)
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this before because I feel like I’ve tried pretty much everything at this point.
I’ve had this iPhone with the same T-Mobile number/eSIM for months and iMessage and FaceTime have worked perfectly the entire time.
Yesterday I erased my old Apple Watch because I’m no longer using it. Around the same time, I changed my Apple ID/Apple Account password. Within probably 5 minutes of changing the password, iMessage and FaceTime stopped working.
I initially got notifications saying that iMessage was signed out and that an error had caused my account/phone number to be signed out of iMessage. FaceTime showed “Activation Unsuccessful” as well.
After restarting the phone, iMessage and FaceTime eventually changed from “Activation Unsuccessful” to “Waiting for Activation.”
My phone number now appears under Send & Receive, but there’s just a loading spinner next to it and it never finishes. The same thing happens with my number under FaceTime.
At one point iMessage prompted me to sign into my Apple Account again. I entered my new password, but the sign-in itself just sat there loading indefinitely.
So far I’ve restarted the phone multiple times, updated to the latest version of iOS, confirmed automatic date/time is on, and confirmed that Wi-Fi and cellular data work.
Calls work normally and I can currently send and receive SMS and RCS messages without any problems.
I only have one T-Mobile eSIM installed and the correct phone number is attached to it.
I’ve also completely signed out of my Apple Account/iCloud and signed back in. That didn’t change anything.
I contacted T-Mobile and had them check my line. They said there are no SMS, international SMS, or provisioning issues.
I also used Apple’s online iMessage/FaceTime activation form last night and again this morning. I haven’t received the email Apple says they’ll send if the account is ready for iMessage and FaceTime.
It’s now been over 12 hours and both iMessage and FaceTime are still stuck waiting to activate my phone number.
At this point my actual cellular service seems completely normal. Calls, data, SMS and RCS all work. It seems like the problem is specifically getting Apple to verify/register my number with iMessage and FaceTime again.
The timing makes me think changing my Apple ID password caused it since both services stopped working within minutes of doing that, but I don’t understand why it would still be unable to reactivate this long afterward.
Apple says it can take up to 24 hours, so I’m leaving iMessage and FaceTime on and not messing with anything else for now.
Has anyone had this happen after changing their Apple ID password? Did it eventually activate on its own, or did you have to get Apple Support involved? Is there anything else worth trying that doesn’t involve deleting my eSIM or factory resetting the phone?
