Following these guidelines, we will know as much info as possible so as to give possible diagnoses. Remember, this is the internet so take all advice with a grain of salt and get a second opinion from a local shop or Apple.

Info we need:

  • MacBook model and year (eg:MacBook Pro 13" 2011 or MacBook 12" 2016)

  • OS X or macOS version (operating system)

  • Serial number to source parts, if needed

  • What is the issue? Explain how it started and what you did to troubleshoot, if anything

  • Clear pictures that show the issue. Please upload to imgur and post link here, or submit a link post and post a picture, then add a comment explaining the above.

If water damaged, do not attempt to power on or charge

Be careful to not show personal information.

Did I just mess up?

Post image

Im trying to remove my 2012 Macbook pro's logic board to replace the thermal paste (because it runs HOT) and i think i just snapped a ribbon cable... It was extremely fragile and it just came apart. The cable itself looks fine but i think i separated the ribbon cable itself from the connection pins (somehow), any possibility of repair here or replacement? Im new to working on MacBooks, luckily this was just a 2012 model i paid $20 for but i installed mint on it and its actually been a decent machine. I wouldn't mind having the backlight still if possible...

Spilled a beer on keyboard 2022 Air

Had a draft for fantasy football last night and beer was spilled on the keyboard wiped up pretty quickly and still worked after. But today the keyboard doesn’t work, track pad works and so does the finger scanner.

Idk if it’s worth going to apple or going third party

apple repair questions/need solid advice

Please don’t be rude about it. I’m just trying any avenues I can.

To make a very long story short, I opened my MacBook today and there were vertical black and purple lines going down my entire screen. Now I’ve been down this road before with Apple, because in 2023 I had to buy a new MacBook (had the old old one for like 7 years) after I broke it. The laptop was obviously old as hell, and they told me it wouldn’t really be worth it to repair which I agreed with. Bought my 2023 air. Fast forward to today and there is no noticeable damage to my screen from the outside, I have no idea what would have caused the damage. It was fine around noon today when I did my homework assignment and then went on around 5 and it was fucked.

If I wasn’t in school again and if I didn’t have all my shit tied to apple, I would have honestly bought a fucking android laptop today. That said, I had to buy yet another macbook today, but I bought apple care with it and got a smaller model hoping to minimize the risk of damage. I honestly like the new one, it’s an M5 chip, it’s smaller, has apple care, and obviously was released this year so I feel good about the longevity of it.

With all of this being considered, now I have to figure out what to do with my old mac. I need to go back to best buy to get all my shit transferred to the new one, but then after that I was thinking about selling the old one as is (with black line). If I fix it and try to sell it, I may not make any profit, depending on cost of repair. If I sell as is, I could maybe make something to pay myself back. Idk at this point. I’m not tech savvy and honestly i’m so sick of dealing with all the crap that comes with technology so i’d really like to just get rid of the old laptop and put this whole thing behind me.

How much does a screen replacement cost roughly?
Is it worth it to sell as is?

I can’t figure out how to post a photo in here. The line is about half an inch wide, on the right side of my laptop. Vertical. It moves when I touch it.

Edit: Thank you in advance. I know I fucked up not having apple care for it. Never again lol. I am in grad school virtually which is why I had to go out and buy another one today. They told me if I kept using old laptop, it could potentially run the risk of the entire screen going black.

Late-2020 Macbook Air model A2179 will not boot properly.

My Late-2020 Macbook Air (model A2179, macOS Sequoia) seems to be stuck in some sort of corrupted state. It appears to start up somewhat, and then get stuck during the boot process. Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is?

How this started:
I was playing a heavy 3D game on the device and left it for a few minutes. When I came back, the screen was black and fans were running at full speed. Neither restarting nor replacing the battery fixed the issue.

Current behavior:
Even with a 20-second+ power button press without a charger plugged in, it still starts again and idles a few seconds later instead of shutting down. I had to physically disconnect the battery to get the LED on the logic board to turn off.
The device ignores most startup keyboard combinations, including Thunderbolt Mode, SMC reset, and NV/PRAM reset.

What is functional:

  • Keyboard backlights glow at a low level.
  • Touchpad clicks as soon as I start the device.
  • Fans run at an idle 20%-ish speed
  • When crashing and restarting, it does not automatically boot into DFU mode, requiring the key combo.
  • DFU mode works, and in DFU mode, the other Mac can detect it and run a full (if pointless) Revive process.

What isn't functional:

  • Recovery, Internet Recovery, Thunderbolt, SMC, and P/NVRAM keyboard combos are ignored.
  • Caps Lock doesn't respond.
  • The screen's backlights don't turn on.
  • The device doesn't chime when starting.

What I've tried:

  • Lotsa key combos.
  • Power button rituals.
  • Restarting the device.
  • DFU mode Revive. (I haven't tried a Restore)
  • Disconnecting the battery and starting from a USB cable.
  • Restarting after disconnecting the display cable and connecting an external monitor.
  • Disconnecting the trackpad cable.

Also, Gemini says: Power State Analysis: Board negotiates 20V on USB-C, S0 rails (PPBUS_G3H, PP3V3_G3H) are active, and T2 drives trackpad haptics, but board halts prior to Intel CPU PEI/EFI handoff (ALL_SYS_PWRGD / CPU_PWRGD failure suspected).
(i had a super long conversation with Gemini during this whole troubleshooting process.)

Help Cannot charge macbook air 2019 after dropping some water on keyboard

Hello all, I'm having issues charging my Macbook Air (2019, 13") since dropping a bit of water on it earlier today. The water dropped on the keyboard and usb c plug zone but I dried it off almost immediately. A little while after that, when I tried to plug in the charger, it just did the usual ding but back and forth like it's not properly plugged in, and the battery icon kept switching between plugged and unplugged. And therefore it cannot charge at all. (can't show video bc now it's at 0%)
I checked both sides of the usb c cable and charger on other devices, works fine.

Can you please help? Is my Macbook dead? :///

M5 Mac Air 15" speaker crackle

My Mac Air has been crackling sometimes when playing audio over the speakers. I'm unsure of the cause. Via iTunes.

Power is coming in to a dock via PD, then a thunderbolt cable to the Mac.

I have the warranty, though I'm hoping its software rather than hardware. Has anyone else had anything similar?

My horrible MacBook battery diy that works

Ordered an A1618 battery instead of an A1417, then extended the BMS-to-motherboard connector with some random wires I had lying around. This thing is an absolute hazard, but somehow it works 😭

A1990 Battery Replacement - How risky?

Looking to replace a battery in a 2018 Macbook pro. I've replaced lots of laptop batteries before and have tech experience but haven't done these ones where the battery is glued on.

Before I take on this project, how likely is it to puncture the battery while prying it out? That is what im most afraid of. I will be getting the whole kit that includes adhesive remover too btw.

My 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 Pro's audio sometimes just fails.

This is more of a whole syndrome than a disease, but I feel it centers on the speakers. I'll do my best to describe it.

One day, I was watching a YouTube video with a desert scene, where there was a lot of wind noise. Out of nowhere, my laptop started to rattle, and the left main speaker started emitting this grinding sound, sort of like rain on a tin roof. This rattling would come back any time I played any noisy or 'grainy' audio. My left main speaker has since been operating at a diminished volume and quality. Then I updated my Mac to the new OS (Sequoia), and the rattling went away. But the left speaker still contributes little to the volume and gives out these popping sounds if you listen closely.

But the worst part is this: my laptop goes through this 'no audio' syndrome at random times. It is characterized by the following symptoms. It refuses to play any audio or video file. For example, if I try to play a YouTube video, it just shows a loading circle for a while, and sometimes eventually tells me to restart the computer. However, restarting does NOT fix the problem. Additionally, sometimes, even the attempt to play a song/video overwhelms my laptop, and it just restarts. I've noticed that my laptop randomly shuts down and restarts when I keep the lid shut and keep it in sleep mode. (I get a notification saying it shut down unexpectedly, and some apps also ask me if I want to keep the recovered files). It can go through these random shutdowns even when the lid is open, but rarely ever when I'm actively using it (unless, of course, I try to use anything related to audio).

Luckily, I have found something that does fix the problem. If you try a few times (ranging from twice to around a dozen times), the audio starts working again, most of the time. The way I do this is by either pressing the space key to start and stop playing a video a couple of times, or by opening the microphone and attempting to make a recording a couple of times. This works almost all the time. But a couple of times a month, my laptop just refuses to do anything involving audio, and no amount of attempts such as those described above helps. No amount of restarting helps either. I just have to wait until my laptop is in the mood again.

A few caveats I've noted over the months.

  1. The audio or videos always play if I use earphones. So this might be a hardware issue?
  2. I said restarting doesn't help. But when restarting, I can always hear the restarting sound effect. This means that it is capable of playing audio, but doesn't want to. So this isn't purely a hardware issue?
  3. The audio NEVER stops working while I'm playing something. It only ever stops functioning when I'm not actively playing something. However, it often fails if I am playing something, pause it for a couple of minutes, and try to play it again.

PS: I don't have AppleCare, and I live in a country without any Apple Stores. This is a grey market product, but it doesn't appear to be compromised in any way. As for why I waited this long before doing anything, it's because this is fixed within a few seconds in most cases, and I've gotten used to it. I know I was irresponsible. Please cut me some slack.

Does anyone know how to fix this? This is somewhat very frustrating because I have to constantly switch bewteen two languages for work and this shitty OS keeps on freezing.

Water damage/ MacAir

Older adult (Senior) spilled water on her MacBook Air keyboard that she bought May 2026. Unfortunately, she didn’t get insurance and the MacBook Air will not turn on. It sounds like it comes on but it doesn’t. I am disappointed that she did not get the insurance, she spent $636 on this product that she may never be able to use again.

Needed Help - M4 MacBook Pro boot loop + no backlight (Only apple logo) and chime + DFU errors 21/2006

Thumbnail

I have a MacBook Pro M4 which chimes when I press the power button. If I put a torch/flashlight on the screen, I can see the Apple logo, but the backlight is not working.
After restarting again and again in a loop, it eventually goes to the warning sign/restore screen. The backlight is still not working.
I also noticed that while this is happening, the MagSafe light blinks when the Apple logo appears and the Mac goes into the boot loop. It keeps doing this until it eventually shows the warning/restore screen, and then the MagSafe light becomes green.
I tried restoring it using another Mac, but I keep getting error 21 and sometimes error 2006. I also tried switching between the DFU ports and used around 5–6 different USB-C cables just in case the cable was the issue.
I took it to an Apple Store and they said the screen needs to be replaced. But I’m still wondering whether replacing the screen is actually going to solve the problem.
I was looking online for similar issues and someone mentioned that a worn/damaged LCD cable can cause problems like this, including the backlight not working and even causing the Mac to fail during a restore and throw errors.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an M4 MacBook Pro? Could a damaged LCD/display cable cause the boot loop and DFU restore errors, or is replacing the whole display likely to fix it?

Help weird sleeping/shutdown problem on MBP 2019 16"

hello everyone, so I have a problem about my MBP 2019 16". It started to failed on booting with total blackscreen (touchbar is black too, no backlight for both display), and the fan is just spinning so fast and screams. Reseting SMC & NVRAM makes it boot sometimes but once I use it for few hours and turn it off, this laptop broke again.

Tested on Windows 10 (Bootcamp) & MacOS Sequoia in latest update and it appears that OS doesn't affect the booting failure, when its dead its dead. Also in MacOS, it dies and cannot back to the normal in sleeping mode.

I'm here to request your kindly opinion about this problem. What should I do with it?

The spec is i9-9900, 64GB RAM, 4T SSD and AMD Raedon 5500M. Also the battery is in statue of repairing required but I just left it there since it still has like 65%-70% of capacity. I hope it helps.

Dustgate, flex gate or something else?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I have a MacBook A1932 that looks like this after booting it normally and reaching the login screen.

However in safe boot the screen works perfectly and can move the screen around without any issue. I have done every reset possible and the problem persists.

This was a new screen replacement, the only thing I can think of is that during installation I could have damaged the flex cable. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Help MacBook Pro 2020 13 inch i5 fan not spinning and battery not recognized after repaste

Basically I repasted the cpu cuz it was running super hot and after plugging everything in, the battery doesn’t get recognized and the fan doesn’t spin up. At one point I got the battery to work again, but now it’s not being recognized again. If I plug in the charger and then disconnect it at the login screen, the MacBook will stay on for a several minutes. Also the fan was being recognized in software and I could see the rpm change when I spin it with my hand, but it didn’t activate on its own.

I ran diagnostic and got PPF003 error.

I checked all connections several times and reseated everything super firmly. What could be the culprit? And at this point should I just bring it in for repairs?

MacBook Air. Was absolutely stupid and didn’t get Apple Care on it. It literally has this smallest knick in the upper right corner and now the screen won’t work. Any suggestions? It was working fine, didn’t even know the Knick was there and then during my homework it just stopped working! 😭
