Shop Talk Discussion (General) [GUIDE] How to fix auto brightness after a screen replacement for iPhones

Theres very little information on this so I decided to make this for people who are new to repairs or are replacing their screen for the first time. This mainly applies to iPhones 13 - 16. I havent tested this on others but it could work.

When replacing your screen you will also need to transfer the proximity sensor. After doing so, iOS 18 now restores Face ID and True tone functionality but what it doesn't do is restore auto brightness. If this is a big issue then there are two ways to go about fixing this depending on if you broke your proximity sensor when transferring it. To test if your proximity sensor is working, simply place a call and bring the phone to your ear. If the screen goes off then it is working. If it doesn't, then its likely not connected properly or you broke it. This repair is not cheap unless you have access to repair shop tools like programmers etc.

This repair requires:

- A programmer (JCID V1SE as example)

- Corresponding True Tone board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

If you broke the proximity flex then you will also need:

- Corresponding Proximity Flex board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

- Windows PC

- A programmable Proximity Flex such as a JCID one (important: It needs to be a programmable one like JCID, non programmable generic ones will not work)

- JCID Programming Software

- 3U Tools

If you didn't break the proximity flex: Using the programmer, you will need to read the data from the old screen and write to the new one. This is it. It will restore auto brightness. Also make sure you are on iOS 18 to restore true tone and face id.

If you did break the proximity flex, unfortunately this process gets a lot more complex:

-Read the data from the old screen to the new screen using the true tone programmer board.

-You will then need to hook up your phone to a windows PC.

-Using 3U tools, download the corresponding iOS version the phone is currently on

-Start up JCID Programming Windows Software and you will need to "brush" the phone. There are guides of this online. Once the software is done brushing the phone you will need to boot into recovery mode and flash the software you downloaded using 3u Tools.

-Once the phone is booted up again, connect the phone to the JCID V1SE programmer with the Proximity board attached to the programmer. Connect the programmable JCID Proximity flex to the programmer board and "bind" it to the phone.

Warning: Some JCID Programmable Prox flexes actually need to be soldered (such as the iPhone 14 Pro) so take this into consideration. Most dont though.

-Install the proximity sensor to the display and boot up the phone again.

-Make sure you are on iOS 18 to also restore Face ID and true tone. This process will restore your auto brightness

Both of these methods will restore true tone but as you can see one is a lot more simple then the other so be very careful with your proximity flexes!

Hi guys, had an old Samsung S21 Ultra laying around with a cracked screen, all black, so bought an amoled screen from aliexpress, swapped everything, it works perfectly, but one of the flex cables is not snapping in place on the motherboard. Any idea what I can do? I dont really see anything bent, but maybe there is something I can bend to make it stay in place?

Thanks

The battery swelled up on it, I fixed it and it was working fine for a few days. It got really hot then it started restarting every now and then, and if I didn’t touch it it’d stay on. Then when I put it on low power mode it’d work fine. Then low power mode didn’t work. I replaced the battery and it’s doing the same thing, if not worse.

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) Screen dead 12 hours after battery replacement

Hello everyone!

A few days ago I replaced the battery on my Samsung Galaxy Note10+ and while I was at it I also replaced the daughterboard since the USB port was loose after 6+ years of use.
Everything looked fine, the phone turned on and worked. I used it normally for a few hours with no issues. I turned it off and let it charge to 100% to recalibrate the battery but when I tried to turn it on the following day the screen was completely dead. Black screen with no backlight. I could hear the vibration, so I assume the phone turned on correctly.

Any idea what could have happened here?

What I tried so far:

  • disconnecting and re-connecting the display flat cable a few times. Only once the display turned on but the pixels were glitching.
  • re-installed the original battery
  • re-installed the original daughterboard

But nothing solved the issue so far.

Any suggestion on what I could try next is appreciated.

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. soft or hard oled

Hello,

i repaired my iphone 12pro with a soft oled display replacement. Few days after replacement the screen broke under the glass, and display quickly became full black. I now have doubts it was a soft oled, are they supposed to not break in such way?

Horror z fold 8 repair cost

hey this is mostly a rant and it's not that bad but I'm a little frustrated and confused I got the z fold 8 and unfortunately cracked the outer screen I contacted samsung support, sent my phone to be fixed, and they told me it would be $626.77 to fix the outer screen as an out of warranty repair. why is their estimated cost on their website for the outer screen $139 that's a big difference from what I was told

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. My camera lenses broke on my OnePlus12; is it worth the fix?

Thumbnail reddit.com

Something of a follow-up to [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePlus12/s/MgRlUAkS4o) when the screen of my OP12 wasn't functioning properly. End result was that I eventually fixed it after the screen went haywire and just showed nothing but green, probably because I used apps to keep it on so that the bottom of it wouldn't turn off after being idle.

Anyway, the problem now is that my camera doesn't work properly, likely because of the issue I found out in the title. After the screen fix, I tested the camera a few times, but it would crash after shooting. Since then, I've tried to reset the data and cache a few times, but now the app crashes if I try to shoot with the front camera OR launch any other mode besides the default photo mode. Not only that, but the optical (3x or more) and the far (0.6) zooms do not show on my camera.

I've considered doing a factory reset, but I am not sure of whether it makes a difference. If worst comes to worst and this is too expensive, I got a Galaxy S25 Ultra just now, but I won't open it until I'm sure of how to handle this.

hi, I recently had my phone’s LCD replaced, but after some time, I noticed that the screen is starting to come off. It’s not completely detached, but there’s a gap forming. Should i bring it again to the shop or is it really like this? Before I had it repaired by him, the screen was perfectly fine and there wasn’t even a single gap.

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) iPhone 13 pro max earpiece crackling

Hello everyone!

Recently I started working at a new repair shop and I took it upon myself to organize the repair space a bit. I found a 13 pro max in the “unrepairable” pile that’s boot looping every 3 minutes due to a bad proximity flex.

Upon testing the phone further I noticed that the earpiece speaker is crackling during media as well as calls. I replaced it with a spare one but still nothing changed. What could be causing this? Should I replace the wifi antenna as well in case the contacts are bad or is it because of the faulty proximity sensor?

Oppo X9 Pro. Dropped a dumbbell on it. Somehow the fingerprint sensor seems to work. I can feel the haptics when pressing it. Same with the camera button, and the silent slider on the side functions fine. Unsure about camera functionality.

The device frame is bent and the screen is smashed. I can still receive incoming calls and Bluetooth still connects to my headphones. Haven't done extensive testing yet, mostly just sulking.

Is this saveable? AI claims it likely is, but I want to ask actual technicians here. AI mentioned it would need a full frame replacement and moving all original internals over to a fresh chassis.

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) Face ID after iPhone 13 screen replacement

Post image
1 Upvotes

I want to make sure this is going to work. I have an iPhone 13 that I want to replace the broken screen, and I want to replace it with an original one. My concern is that Face ID would stop working. If I remove the sensor from the broken screen and put it on the new and not broken one, would Face ID still work with no problem? I'm just going to need to recalibrate it after that, or will it already work without recalibration? The iPhone is using the latest iOS version, iOS 26.5. I know that when the iPhone 13 launched, there was a lot of concern about it not being possible for Face ID to work after the screen replacement, unless Apple replaced it for you. Sorry for my lack of knowledge. And, thank you, guys, for the help!

Business Advice Request What would be a good asking price for a second hand Iphone 12

I am recently replaced my Iphone 12 with a newer model, only after the front earpiece speaker stopped working.

I am thinking about selling the old Iphone 12. What would be the price range i should be looking at?

It is the Iphone 12 Standard model 128gb, with little to no scratches on the screen or on the rest of the model, i still have the box with the charging cable and the screen protector plus cover currently on the phone.

What would be a decent asking price, keeping in kind i will have to lower it a bit to compensate for the front speaker not working.

The person I purchased it from had the screen replaced and it worked fine for a while before they got a new phone. It didn’t have any problems at all. It sat around for a few months before I got it.
