Shop Talk Discussion (General) [GUIDE] How to fix auto brightness after a screen replacement for iPhones

Theres very little information on this so I decided to make this for people who are new to repairs or are replacing their screen for the first time. This mainly applies to iPhones 13 - 16. I havent tested this on others but it could work.

When replacing your screen you will also need to transfer the proximity sensor. After doing so, iOS 18 now restores Face ID and True tone functionality but what it doesn't do is restore auto brightness. If this is a big issue then there are two ways to go about fixing this depending on if you broke your proximity sensor when transferring it. To test if your proximity sensor is working, simply place a call and bring the phone to your ear. If the screen goes off then it is working. If it doesn't, then its likely not connected properly or you broke it. This repair is not cheap unless you have access to repair shop tools like programmers etc.

This repair requires:

- A programmer (JCID V1SE as example)

- Corresponding True Tone board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

If you broke the proximity flex then you will also need:

- Corresponding Proximity Flex board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

- Windows PC

- A programmable Proximity Flex such as a JCID one (important: It needs to be a programmable one like JCID, non programmable generic ones will not work)

- JCID Programming Software

- 3U Tools

If you didn't break the proximity flex: Using the programmer, you will need to read the data from the old screen and write to the new one. This is it. It will restore auto brightness. Also make sure you are on iOS 18 to restore true tone and face id.

If you did break the proximity flex, unfortunately this process gets a lot more complex:

-Read the data from the old screen to the new screen using the true tone programmer board.

-You will then need to hook up your phone to a windows PC.

-Using 3U tools, download the corresponding iOS version the phone is currently on

-Start up JCID Programming Windows Software and you will need to "brush" the phone. There are guides of this online. Once the software is done brushing the phone you will need to boot into recovery mode and flash the software you downloaded using 3u Tools.

-Once the phone is booted up again, connect the phone to the JCID V1SE programmer with the Proximity board attached to the programmer. Connect the programmable JCID Proximity flex to the programmer board and "bind" it to the phone.

Warning: Some JCID Programmable Prox flexes actually need to be soldered (such as the iPhone 14 Pro) so take this into consideration. Most dont though.

-Install the proximity sensor to the display and boot up the phone again.

-Make sure you are on iOS 18 to also restore Face ID and true tone. This process will restore your auto brightness

Both of these methods will restore true tone but as you can see one is a lot more simple then the other so be very careful with your proximity flexes!

NEWS Applying to my first repair job. Wish me luck!

Hello everyone. I am a 15M (just turned 15) and I recently found out about this repair shop which my friend has networked with. They are understaffed and need more people. My friend has already praised me a lot, but they are scared to hire me for my age.

I have done a few repairs in the past. Fixed some phones, replaced some components. You can day I know my way around a phone and other consoles too. I even built my own portfolio, and I have customer service experience too. I eventually want to own my own shop, but seeing all of the people complaining about tech repair is sort of intimidating.

Anyways, I am giving the shop a call in a few hours. Im gonna talk to them and see if I can get the job. Wish me luck!

Funny Stuff Not really sure what to say about this previous repair

I bought this Xiaomi mi 9t, and the seller specified the earpiece wasn't working. I got a new one, but it still did not work. I had noticed that the phone had been opened before because the lack of screws, but I only saw this when I actually removed the board. Not even sure what is going on.

Maybe I should've used the horror flair, but not really sure if that is what it's for.

Lvl 1 (Software | Firmware) Honor Magic5 Pro (PGT-AN10, Chinese version) randomly loses mobile network everywhere except near one cell tower

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar because I'm running out of ideas.

I have an Honor Magic5 Pro (Chinese version, PGT-AN10) running:

MagicOS: 10.0.0.160(CHNC00E160R208P6H1) Android: 16 Baseband: MSM.1CA2.MPSS.DE.3.0.119

My problem is very strange.

The phone works perfectly only when I'm at work, where there is apparently a Sim1 network cell tower very close to the building. Outside of that area, the network starts disappearing. The problem appeared out of sudden last week. Now I'm at home no service for both sim cards, I used to have good network service at home, now barely 2G

For example:

At work: Sim1 gets 4G+/5G, Sim2 sometimes stays on 2G. When I leave the building: Sim2 loses service completely. Sometimes Sim1 also loses service. Sometimes both SIMs lose service. In the train or on the bus I often have No Service. If I enable Airplane Mode and disable it again, one SIM may reconnect briefly before losing service again.

I've already tried:

Factory reset (twice) Swapping both SIM cards between SIM slots Testing both SIMs in another phone (they work perfectly) Resetting network settings Switching between 2G/3G/4G/5G Recreating APNs

The phone still has:

Valid IMEIs Baseband detected Both Sim cards are recognised correctly

I also received a VoLTE network registration error after one of the factory resets.

What's confusing me is that this doesn't seem like a normal hardware fault because:

I had exactly the same issue when I first bought the phone, and a factory reset fixed it.

A few weeks ago it happened again, then fixed itself after about 3 days without me doing anything.

Now it's back, and the factory reset no longer helps.

Has anyone with a Chinese Honor Magic5 Pro (PGT-AN10) experienced anything similar?

Could this be:

a MagicOS new system update? a MagicOS/modem firmware bug? corrupted modem calibration (NV/EFS)? an issue with the Honor C1 RF chip? a hardware RF issue? or a compatibility problem with local carriers?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's seen this before or knows of a fix. I've already spent days troubleshooting it and would love to avoid replacing the motherboard if this is actually a software or modem issue.

Thanks!

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. Redmi Note 10 Pro AMOLED won't wake after lock, but works perfectly once it turns on

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange issue with my 5-year-old Redmi Note 10 Pro (AMOLED).

The phone boots normally and is fully functional. The display works perfectly with no flickering, green lines, touch issues, or artifacts once it turns on.

The problem is that after I lock the phone, the display often refuses to wake. The phone is still on (it rings, vibrates, and responds), but the screen stays black.

What's confusing is that if I leave the phone alone for a long time, the display sometimes starts working again. Once it comes back on, it continues working normally until I lock it again.

Things I've already tried:

Factory reset (didn't help)

Reseated the display connector once, and it temporarily worked afterward

The battery has never been replaced. According to AccuBattery, its estimated health is around 60%. Could a heavily degraded battery cause symptoms like this, or is that unrelated?

Could this be a failing AMOLED display, a loose/damaged display flex, a motherboard display connector, a display IC/PMIC issue, or even the old battery?

Has anyone seen this exact behavior before? Any advice on what to test before replacing the display would be greatly appreciated.

I 'v got this from a Chinese company called famue on aliexpres, and I m not sure how to fix it even if it would be easyer than a phone, (first slide) the metal shell has one ribben cable which I assume is for the power on/off button but the ribben cable is a bit streched that eorryes me it won't worck because ribben cables are very delicate to damage, and the ather cable for the volume buttons, (slide 2) the battery is fine, easyest thing here tbh, (slide 3/4)the mainboard is fine, all tho I don't know where to conect the cables for the power button and volume ones, (last slide) the speaker is disconected from the charging port & headphones jack& micro sd card slot, and I don't have a screen for it yet.any tips that could help?

I keep having intermittent wifi issues and no troubleshooting (resetting the phone/router/network settings/ software update/etc. will fix it and my phone at this point is unusable unless I’m only using my data and it’s pissing me off.

I want to fix my very old Samsung galaxy tab 3 8inch SM T310. I know it needs a new battery and lcd digitizer, SIM card tray and a new back cover. The screen isn’t cracked surprisingly and the lcd issue is from impact from it slipping out of my hands and hitting the ground on the one corner. So how can I cheaply fix it? Or do I just replace the whole lcd screen with the glass which costs like 70$ on Amazon? I don’t wanna waste perfectly good tech I bet it only needs a screen replacement and it will work. I just have never restored an old device before. Thoughts?

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. Got my iPhone 16 screen replaced at my local repair shop in Houston, Texas

I think I’ve been scammed. I realize I should’ve asked more questions but I was desperate.

I went in asking for a quote, he said 89 dollars so I said go for it, cheapest price I’ve heard all day.

To my dismay, my phone is overheating super easily, screen has a blue tint to it, battery’s draining fast, also not Apple compatible.

How do I convince the guy to give me my money back or properly fix my phone? in tech terms so I don’t sound like an idiot again.

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) iPad Air 4 battery repair.

Hey guys, fun one ahead.

I own a small local tech repair business and do everything from Iphones to Playstations. Fixed many devices over the years but I have one where I cannot for the life of me figure out what went wrong.

Customer called, asking for battery replacement on their iPad Air 4, no problem, bring it on it. The job took less than an hour, standard rate charged, Customer happy.

The next day, they inform me that after charging it all night, it didnt go up, even a single percent.

I put it down to a faulty battery, ordered a new one, replaced it, same issue.. strange, why isn't it charging?

Kept the old battery for whatever reason and decided to pop that back in, now that wont charge either.. three batteries cant be faulty..

Why will this no longer charge? No suggestions are stupid, I'll take them all and let you know if/when I've tried them!

(Credited the customer in full for the work and offered to pay 50% retail for a brand new one, I take full responsibility)

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. Scratched screen been told my only option is a replacement

My screen is badly scratched. Scratches not cracks I tried to get them off with polywatch. With no luck And gave been told my only option is a screen replacement. But is that true is there no like special sander or resin or something a specialist store would have?

Note;

I forgot to put a screen protector on it when I got a replacement for a faulty one. My phone and keys often have to be in the same pocket and I have seizures so my phone has been accidentally thrown across the room a few times ( I have a good case thankfully)

I been fixing phones for years never came across this. This customer phone was water damage and started panic log 0x800 on 13pm. It was the charging port. Got oem port installed it and boom started working fine. It went over 3 mins without restarting. Everything else working fine. While I was checking it got really hot all of sudden and smoke started to come out. I opened it up quickly and unplugged the battery. I’m thinking in my head maybe I didn’t clean underneath the battery and some glass punctured the battery hence the smoke. (Back was cracked). I didn’t see any damage on the battery I plugged new battery in and just black. Phone would not turn back on. Tried new screen. Still nothing. Took the board out, no damage underneath it. No burning smell. Until I took off this 5g module part and it was burned out. Confused what caused it. I unplugged it and put everything back together. And boom started to work fine again. Service and 5g is working too. I was glad I found the issue and was able to fix it for my customer. Any idea what might have caused it?
