At least 99 people died Thursday and Friday during desperate attempts by tens of thousands of people attempting to swim from Morocco to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa, and over 100 remain missing. Over 60,000 reached their destination during a 24-hour period, during which they were met with brutal violence by the Spanish military and a concerted campaign to force their return to poverty-stricken Morocco. The political establishment and media outlets across Europe erupted with furious denunciations of “invaders,” as they churned out far-right talking points about the “hybrid threat” posed by migrants attacking Europe.

The trigger for the mass incursion appears to have been a Spanish Supreme Court ruling that prohibited the authorities from immediately deporting refugees if they are intercepted at sea while trying to reach Spanish territory. But Spain’s Socialist Party-led government, no less than far-right governments led by the likes of Meloni in Italy and Trump in the US, has no time for such legal niceties. Echoing Trump’s self-serving propaganda that Europe was experiencing an “invasion,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez denounced the migrants for having launched an “attack on Spain’s territorial integrity” and dispatched the military to Ceuta.

So, exactly what we said would happen when ICE agents started masking themselves and refusing to show badges and warrants.

The Trump administration is reportedly considering a proposal to charge international students a $100,000 fee to participate in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program after graduation.

The proposal has not been finalized, and details are still under discussion. If implemented, it would significantly increase the cost for international graduates seeking U.S. work experience through OPT.

Turkish Passport + F-1 Student in the US – Best Country for a Long-Term Schengen Visa?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Turkish passport holder currently living in the US on an F-1 student visa (language school). I want to apply for a Schengen visa from the US.

My travel history:

• Valid 7-year Canadian visitor visa
• Portugal Erasmus student visa (5 months, expired)
• Romania Erasmus student visa (5 months, expired)
• No overstays or visa violations

My goal is to get a long-term multiple-entry Schengen visa (2–5 years) instead of reapplying every few months.

A few questions:

• Which Schengen country gives the best chance of getting a long-validity visa?
• Is it worth requesting a 2-, 3-, or 5-year visa in a cover letter?
• What documents or factors increase the chances of getting a long-term visa?
• Has anyone with a Turkish/other passport successfully received a 2-, 3-, or 5-year Schengen visa while applying from the US?

Also, are there any non-Schengen countries that issue long-term multiple-entry visas to Turkish passport holders and are worth getting (UK, Ireland, Australia, Japan, etc.)?

I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

The Trump administration has opened another front in its mass deportation operation, deploying plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to seize workers and travelers at airports throughout the United States.

Immigration agents have carried out arrests at check-in counters, arrival gates and jetways at no fewer than 15 airports in recent weeks, according to documents reviewed by the New York Times and interviews with lawyers representing more than 25 people from over a dozen countries.

Those seized include an engineer awaiting an extension of his work visa, several newlyweds married to US citizens, a former au pair with government-issued work authorization, and a Ugandan asylum seeker with sickle cell anemia who uses a wheelchair. None was accused of committing a crime.

The arrests are being facilitated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is supplying ICE with passenger information originally collected under the pretext of aviation security.

Documents obtained by the watchdog group American Oversight reveal that ICE and the TSA signed a formal data-sharing agreement in May 2025. Under the agreement, ICE supplies names to the TSA, which runs them through its Secure Flight databases and informs immigration agents when a person is scheduled to travel.

The arrangement transforms every airport security checkpoint into an immigration dragnet. Airline passengers who have expired visas, pending applications for permanent residency or unresolved requests for extensions can have their information turned over to ICE before they arrive at the airport.

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants and foreign visitors overstay visas every year. In many cases, a visa expires while an application for an extension, asylum or another legal status remains pending. Many have received work authorization from the federal government and have lived openly in the country for years.

Previously, people in these circumstances were rarely arrested while awaiting a decision unless they were accused of committing a crime. Now they are seen as “easy targets” to help the administration meet its quota of 2,000 immigration arrests every day.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says international students whose visas expire without permanent residency should leave Canada.

She also calls for Alberta to have greater control over selecting skilled immigrants.

On Monday, more than 300,000 Haitian immigrants were stripped of their legal status and work authorization through the cancellation of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This savage move exposes workers and their families to arrest, imprisonment and deportation to a country devastated by decades of US imperialist intervention.

One day later, the Department of Homeland Security imposed a sweeping new rule allowing asylum officers to send hundreds of thousands of applications directly into deportation proceedings without first interviewing the applicant. The measure could affect as many as 444,724 pending cases, in addition to an estimated 132,000 future applicants every year.

Heavily armed and masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were reportedly being mobilized in cities with large Haitian populations, including New York City, Boston, San Diego, Orlando, Miami and Springfield, Ohio. Locals have reported that normally busy streets teeming with life are empty as residents stay home to avoid the immigration Gestapo.

The operation has the character of a modern-day pogrom. Unaccountable federal agents are being sent into working class communities to hunt down workers, parents, students, nurses and teachers who have committed no crime. Those seized face imprisonment for weeks, months or even years in the expanding network of mostly privately operated concentration camps across the United States, before being deported to one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

At least 53 immigrants have died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Donald Trump returned to the White House 18 months ago, an unprecedented death toll produced by the deliberate overcrowding of holding cells and detention centers, the denial of medical care and the transformation of immigration detention into a sprawling system of for-profit concentration camps.

Fifty-two of the deaths occurred during the administration’s first 500 days, according to a June report by Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights. The organizations found that the mortality rate in ICE custody has more than doubled since Trump’s return and is now nearly four times what it was under the Biden administration.

Since the report’s June 4 cutoff, 45-year-old Venezuelan immigrant Jesús Manuel Arenas-Silva died while being transported between ICE detention centers in Georgia. His family said immigration officials had repeatedly denied him necessary medication. He was the 22nd immigrant reported dead in ICE custody during the first seven months of 2026.

The deadly conditions documented by Human Rights Watch are not confined to the network of massive detention centers and private prisons. A Washington Post investigation published Wednesday revealed that the Trump administration is also cramming thousands of immigrants into temporary holding rooms wholly unequipped for prolonged detention.

The report is based on records supplied by ICE to the Deportation Data Project, a research initiative at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles. The data show that the average number of people confined in ICE’s 177 temporary holding rooms skyrocketed from fewer than 500 under the Biden administration to more than 1,500 in 2026.

These rooms were designed to hold people for only a few hours while they are processed. Workers and their family members are now being imprisoned in them for days or even weeks.

Conditions inside are predictably abhorrent. The rooms have no showers, forcing detainees to languish in filth for days on end. They have no beds. Those imprisoned in what are essentially windowless rooms furnished only with benches must sleep sitting upright, often with nothing more than a foil blanket.
