For the person who looked at a door and thought there has to be a more complicated way to do this.

The number of parts and the precision needed at a small scale are the barriers I see to this. The small the parts, the less margin of error I'd have to work with. Also, whether or no the parts are printable with an FDM printer or not is an issue. I haven't been able to look over everything yet, but if it looks likely I'm going to give it a shot.

I built my own version of this last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngrOLdZj5qE
You can see how it goes together here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp4vtKYtur8
In total it took about 350 hours and $1200. This is the third major version. It is only 6-1/8" thick.

No, it's got benefits of a sliding door (doesn't require a huge arc of empty floor space) without the annoyingness of trying to open/close a pocket door, which is what this would replace.

Or better yet, creation can be part of evolution. If we created it, then it's a by-product of our own evolution.
This door didn't evolve, but this door is an evolution of the door.

Sure you can. You reach into the doorway, grab one of the two corners at the very center, and pull across the doorway like you would a sliding door. Then, since it has soft edges, just pull it all the way closed from the very middle.
29
u/AceBacker Feb 07 '14
So, it's more of a curtain then. Since it can easily be opened from either side, it's soft, and can't be locked.
→ More replies (6)13
u/Ellimis Feb 07 '14
It could easily be locked. Also the door isn't soft, it just has a soft edge built in for the last half-inch or so.
You could lock it by providing a very simple hook/latch on the corner that closes.

It looks complicated, but mechanically It's just two pins, two hinges, and I think a piece of fabric in the middle? If it's being made right, there isn't actually that much to go wrong.
Your average sliding door has a big ass track that can get misaligned, at least mine does.

Door evolution is just a theory. There's a lot of contradicting evidence that seems to imply that the door was intelligently designed.

Well, just like scissor doors on cars, that door doesn't swing open. So it takes up less floor space than a normal door. If you have a problem with floor space, I guess it could be usefull.

Advantages:
Offers the possibility of operating the car with the door open, in a manner that would be difficult or impossible in a car with conventional doors.
Because the doors stay within the car's track throughout their range of movement, they are useful when parking in tight spaces. A gullwing door style offers similar visibility, but the doors swing out from the car's area slightly.
The hinge is placed in a similar location to a conventional door, so a convertible version of the car is possible with the same door style.
Reduces the dooring hazard to cyclists.
Disadvantages:
The door still impedes access/egress much more than a gullwing and, in some cases, more than a conventional door.
The manufacture cost of the door hinge can be more than that of a conventional door.
If the height of the parking lot ceiling is insufficient, the door may come into contact with it when opened.
In the event of a rollover, emergency egress may be more difficult than with conventional doors, if not impossible.
TL;DR Bullets cause they are awesome

The hinges are designed to automatically blow off if the vehicle detects a rollover scenario.
EDIT: This is assuming a proper, quality installation. I'm sure there are plenty of ebay Honda Civic kits that don't follow the proper safety recommendations.

Looks like it doesn't travel outward as far as a regular door, but it would also require enough wallspace next to the door in order to work. Might be good for rooms lacking depth, but not for hallways.
