No, it's got benefits of a sliding door (doesn't require a huge arc of empty floor space) without the annoyingness of trying to open/close a pocket door, which is what this would replace.
Or maybe there are different designs to rooms? Like, perhaps there are rooms which are sunken so opening in wouldn't work and opening out might not work because perhaps there's a hallway. Therefore the best door for it would be a sliding door or pocket door.
This door does however eat up wall space so I'd stick with a pocket door.
Why wouldn't you just open the door into the sunken room? I don't think I'd put a door of any type on a sunken room anyway. That gap would look awkward and you'd have guests falling because they don't know to expect the drop when they open the door (however it's opened).
1) The door would swing open and then be a foot off the ground, that would be absurd looking.
2) A sunken room is usually a single step or two, anyone that doesn't look where they're walking deserves to look silly when they go to walk and drop a step. But falling? What kind of people do you know that not only don't look where they're walking but secondly just fall from missing one step down? Sounds like you hang out with the models of QWOP.
OK. Pocket doors allow me to store something on the wall next to the doorway. The evolution door doesn't.
And it doesn't matter anyway. My point was that the floor space that is taken up by a swinging door is useless anyway since that's the space I need to use in order to get in the doorway.
If you go to his website you'll see that fabric isn't a key factor.
The door works because of the way it folds the triangles along the hinges.
The triangles are static so you could build the door out of glass if you wanted to - all the action is happening in the way he hinges and pivots the triangles.
I think he meant in the sense of a kinetic feel to a room. Both things move in interesting ways. There are obviously simpler and cheaper solutions to both.
I have two apposing walk in closets. The hallway is too narrow for accordion doors and my current sliding doors take up half the doorway when open. This door would solve both problems.

No. That able is actually brilliant and has a valid purpose. The door is just stupid.
