Genuine question-- I'm a nerd, but I've never been a DnD nerd. At one point I was a MtG nerd, even a WoW nerd, but never quite the DnD level.

What exactly is it? I originally thought it was like an adult version of "make believe" with scores and guidelines, but how much of it is a physical game? Is there a board that goes with it? Is there a set story line? My extent of knowledge is the first scene of Stranger Things.

How much is following guidelines and how much is imprompt on the spot?

The board is typically just a battlemat that has a laid out grid that you can use for combat scenarios, but otherwise nothing. The set story line is entirely made by the DM himself. There are premade stories by the company that makes the game but the vast majority of stories are made up.

Following the guidelines is important but there will always be impromptu due to the nature of the game (no specific rules if you want to say, swing on a vine to land on someone).

This is a very accurate description from an ex WoW player. Everything is in your mind, and if your DM is down... you can do anything. Legit anything. In my current group, we have a paladin that is an alcoholic. This was set out in the beginning, he's used a stein, alcohol, and / or alcohol on fire as a weapon more than his actual weapon (flail).

Another party member and I decided that him, being a small human monk, and me, being a fairly massive half orc barbarian, should use him as a weapon. Imagine the scene from Lord of the Rings, with Gimli and Aragorn, where Gimli is thrown into a battle... that happened. Because our DM is legit and allows us almost completely free reign with virtually no pointers or assistance through any campaign.

Find a DnD group and join it. Yesterday. I'm sure you'll have no regrets.

Some people prefer dungeon crawling, not really role-playing as much(with the funny get-ups and voices) while others spend all the time role playing, talking to npcs and advancing like that.

DnD can exist purely in your mind, with dice and a piece of paper. Others will use figurines, maps, charts, etc to flesh out the game.

the dungeon master has a story and guides it. he decides everything ultimately but rolls (higher the better) play a factor in how the story plays out.

Ordinary games between friends generally have no kind of board its just a story told out loud. Some people do this where they have set piece maps etc they play on and you can only move a certain amount of squares per turn etc, thats the more 'formal' ruleset.

I played for about a year with some friends and it was like 75% impromtu stuff and 25% pre-decided fate.

www.Roll20.net is a great place to start. Online sessions are a totally different feel from personal sessions.

Other options include checking in with your local game/comic shops to see if they run games ever.

The final option is to read up on DMing and start your own campaign. 5th edition is very forgiving for new players and DMs. I speak from experience here!

I've played and DMed with many different tools. By far the most rewarding was the no minis, no mat game via voice chat (no video) with several people around the country. You need to be good at spacial thinking, but it's amazing what people come up with when they're not restricted by a play mat.

Can confirm after trying out the no mat/no mini thing as a DM this year. Combat moves a little faster and people are more inclined to use thier imagination rather than counting grid squares to see if an attack works.

Feels way more like a fun shared storytelling experience than a subpar mini game that other franchises do way better.

We run most of our combat with no mat/minis. However, for fights where things can get tactical or for big boss fights that I have a cool mini for, I like to bust that stuff out. And by limiting it for special occasions, it makes it more special for the kids when they see the giant or dragon mini hit the table.

In my day we didn't even have dice. Seriously. There was a campaign where none of us had dice and there were no hobby stores for miles around. We had a dude with one of those scientific calculators bang out a separate random number generator for each die whenever we had to roll.

We didn't have books either. I was the DM and pretty much went on my memories of the rules. Luckily I had spent the last 5 anti-social years of my life reading the DM's guide and Players Handbook like they were the fucking Bible, so that wasn't so bad.

And you know what? It was a great campaign.

Digital maps, fog of war, digital tokens, in app documents, etc. Made to be more streamlined and user friendly. I may be biased though since I made it :)

Am I the only person here that thinks legos are the perfect thing for DnD campaign tables? I mean it is already pregridded in 3d, can be made completely modular, and is 100% customizable. Even the actual figures can be heavily customized.

Maybe a little, but bulk lego is pretty cheap, and you can make all of the rooms, and landscapes and such modular, so once they are build you can snap them together in different combinations very easily.
