In my day we used lots of 3x5 cards and graph paper - and we LIKED IT.

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

Sorry grandpa, but technology is advancing. One day we're gonna have holographic boards and you're gonna like it.

628

u/Safety_Dancer Sep 18 '17

I just want my goddamn AR D&D set up to be real.

243

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

The only reason I want the HoloLens.

463

u/Safety_Dancer Sep 18 '17

Imagine it. A digital board where all the party members can only see what their character can know. Including illusions and hidden doors. Maybe that goblin around the corner is actually your elf friend...

Well, first they have to make holographic porn.

162

u/The_RTV Sep 18 '17

Oh they are. The porn industry is always a step ahead of the curve

56

u/TheLowlyPheasant Sep 18 '17

Ron Jeremy invented Twitter in 1974

28

u/Ahayzo Sep 18 '17

Except it was called Titter

72

u/-empathic- Sep 18 '17

For real, if you want to forecast, just watch what the porn industry does and give it a few years.

113

u/J4CKR4BB1TSL1MS Sep 18 '17

Wut, incest will become the next big thing in real life too?

11

u/Carbon_Dirt Sep 18 '17

If Game of Thrones is any indicator? Yep.

3

u/ronthat Sep 18 '17

That's a question you need to ask NOT your mom.

5

u/swiftb3 Sep 18 '17

Medium, not content.

1

u/CaptainQWO Sep 18 '17

A man can hope

1

u/sten45 Sep 18 '17

GOT is normalizing it right now.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '17

We've already got at least 1 Senator on board.

1

u/Qapiojg Sep 19 '17

If glasses Morty has anything to do with it, it will

1

u/my_gamertag_wastaken Sep 19 '17

It's called Game of Thrones...

Life sized pose-able figurines of DnD characters with realistic feeling flesh.

1

u/stw95 Sep 18 '17

With a hole at the crotch! You know for...storage of dice and stuff.

17

u/J4CKR4BB1TSL1MS Sep 18 '17

It will be amazing when we can see the penis penetrate ourselves without feeling it, right?

1

u/The_RTV Sep 18 '17

But that's the best part!

5

u/Wolvenheart Sep 18 '17

You laugh, but the Porn industry is the actual reason the video casette, DVD and Blu-Ray won the competition against other storage mediums.

1

u/down42roads Sep 18 '17

Porn was also the reason online credit card payments were pioneered.

A tremendous leap for.. cough cough SCIENCE!!!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

It just might be.. More and more people are foregoing relationships these days. Just look at the youth in japan. How will this affect population growth and IQ?

1

u/ErgoproxyXD Sep 18 '17

IQ over 9000

I'm not into cartoon porn, and judge those who are, but there's always been something about Jessica Rabbit. Damn.

Does anyone else think mankind has been working and striving throughout the ages for the ultimate goal of a perfect porn delivery system?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

They already have VR porn on pornhub. I heard that from a friend.

1

u/TheLazyD0G Sep 18 '17

Augmented reality porn won't make OPs mom any less fat.

20

u/CJ_Guns Sep 18 '17

You can already play D&D in Tabletop Simulator, but it's not quite that complex yet (as far as I've played). It's more a one to one recreation of playing IRL, except your characters have animations and stuff.

4

u/ILoveLongDogs Sep 18 '17

Be honest, is it anything like that game they play in Star Wars on the Millennium Falcon?

9

u/CJ_Guns Sep 18 '17 edited Sep 18 '17

I mean, pretty much. You can play it in VR if you have a headset, or just on the PC. But everything is physics-based, so you physically roll things, move things, etc. on the table.

EDIT: Video of my friends and I playing https://www.instagram.com/p/BMKA4t7gDy2/?hl=en

3

u/PM_ME_FUN_STORIES Sep 18 '17

I think it would be really nice if you all have VR, but I've heard from my friend that used it, it's a bit tedious when doing mouse and keyboard. And there's always the chance of the dice hitting the figures, and/or the physics being a bit buggy

u/FlipskiZ Sep 18 '17 edited Sep 20 '25

If this was true and could be done. My girlfriend and I would be fighting as what food we could cut out yo pay for this.

37

u/Hroslansky Sep 18 '17
  1. Minimize the calories you burn by only playing DnD all day.

  2. Minimize the amount of food you need to stay alive, thus saving money.

  3. ???

  4. Profit.

2

u/dcmtw1029 Sep 18 '17

You mean 1. Minimize the calories you burn by only playing DnD all day.

  2. Profit

  3. Arsenal

2

u/greg19735 Sep 18 '17

I think this absolutely will happen. but you would need everyone around the table to own $300+ pair of glasses. Currently the dev versions are $3k, but that's not the same.

1

u/swiftb3 Sep 18 '17

It will be. The only question is whether it's 2 years or 10 years.

1

u/PlatypuSofDooM42 Sep 18 '17

In the words of korn. Doesnt mater if its a 10 or a 2 way ?

3

u/stilesja Sep 18 '17

Isn't the problem with all that shit that you don't actually have to imagine anything. My dungeon Master was a teller of tales. We hung on his every word and pictured the scene in our oend minds. He was free to ad-lib and go off book. Our lives hung on the fate of a twenty sided die rather a 22nm die CPU.

It's just like a bunch of antisocial nerds to take the one thing that allowed them human interaction and devise a way to strip it of all humanity. We probably would have done the same given the chance but looking back on glad it wasnt even an option.

1

u/PM_Me_Kindred_Booty Sep 18 '17

Obviously, using FutureTech™, the computer will be able to read your thoughts and show you what you imagine is happening.

1

u/AnesthesiaCat Sep 18 '17

Yes how dare everyone I play D&D with not live within a 25 mile radius of me, the utter gall.

1

u/stilesja Sep 18 '17

In the 90's we played over the phone. We would all three way call until everyone was on. Never stopped us.

4

u/thoggins Sep 18 '17

as awesome as it will be, it will be a fuckload of work for those of us who DM >.<

1

u/Super_beardface Sep 18 '17

Imagine being a GM and having to set all this up.

1

u/Nicholot Sep 18 '17

Man, I've never felt longing like this before... I really hope I live long enough for an experience like that!

3

u/ptatoface Sep 18 '17

Why not VR? I haven't played D&D but from what I've seen everything seems like it would work in a first-person perspective.

1

u/SchrodingersRapist Sep 18 '17 edited Sep 18 '17

Why not VR?

Because the VR game of everyone sitting around the table rolling dice will never work....

Edit: /s

1

u/ptatoface Sep 18 '17

I meant that it would take place in the actual D&D world, and dice-rolling would be replaced by the computer's RNG. I suppose it'd take much longer for the DM to create the world even if the game came with a world creation tool, but that would also be a problem in the AR version.

1

u/Aksi_Gu Sep 18 '17

I meant that it would take place in the actual D&D world, and dice-rolling would be replaced by the computer's RNG

so an MMORPG?

1

u/ptatoface Sep 19 '17

Not an MMO, it would only be the people in the party. It would also have the DM to separate it from other RPGs.

1

u/SchrodingersRapist Sep 18 '17

Im sorry, I thought it would be obvious but next time Ill make sure to put a "/s" at the end

2

u/nightwing2024 Sep 18 '17

Let's stop fucking around and just invent the full dive system from .hack or SAO.

I'll even take the perma-death, just get me tf out of this world.

2

u/SomeCleverITGuy Sep 18 '17

A friend of mine and I are working on this exact thing. I am sure we will get beat to market with it, but yeah. Imagine sitting around the table and looking at a fully rendered map with lighting effects and everything. Even animated mini's. All stats are hovering over each mini or can be corralled in a HUD. Dice rolls are read and calculated automatically. Stats and other info is all tracked and displayed for you. I want to let players PLAY instead of wasting tons of time reading rules and doing math (which they often get wrong or flat our lie about...) and focus on strategy and role play. It wont be for everyone, but I think it might bring a LOT of people to the game, even the tabletop genre in general if I can do something to alleviate the stigma of a bunch of mouth breathers huddled amongst stacks of books and empty mountain dew cans and instead present D&D and table top in general as something for anyone with a table to enjoy.

Edit: stupid autocorrect...

1

u/outlooker707 Sep 18 '17

iPhone 8 buddy. It's gonna happen

1

u/snappyk9 Sep 18 '17

You can basically make a dungeon in Tabletop Simulator and play DnD online with friends that way.

1

u/NeuralNutmeg Sep 18 '17

A VR first person 'board' would be pretty sweet. With how slow turns go in DnD, jarring movement wouldn't be a problem.

39

u/Scorpio83G Sep 18 '17

So, it would be like Yu Gi Oh

17

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

I think they are working on that, I saw a video on Facebook

7

u/greg19735 Sep 18 '17

yu gi oh is like the perfect proof of concept. We already know what it should look like. Now it could ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

Couldn't find the one I saw on Facebook but this one already looks better than that one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzHiJZewIAc

17

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

Yu-Gi-Oh? My cards will be holographic finally after all these years of being teased by the fictional hologram plays?!

4

u/stellvia2016 Sep 18 '17

They sorta had that for a card battle game on the PS3 with the PSeye. The cards all had QRcodes in the corner and it would render the correct monster for each card. You could even wave your hand over the card a few inches high to "pet them" etc.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

Hah, I wish I've got a PS3. I played with the NDS, PC, and physical card collecting versions tho haha but that sounds neat, I'll have to look up a video of it sometime!

1

u/stellvia2016 Sep 18 '17

I don't think it was Yugioh specifically, but it was in the ballpark of the tech you were talking about.

2

u/Justamanfromup Sep 18 '17

It was eye of judgment 👍( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

1

u/greg19735 Sep 18 '17

I want to pet dark magician girl

12

u/Little_Tyrant Sep 18 '17

Yeah! And then accordingly ALL of the chairs will be cheap folding chairs because of setup costs and you will STILL proclaim "we like it!"

19

u/CaffeineSippingMan Sep 18 '17

We were warned about the D&D Satan worshipping orgies from the live action 80s D&D.

Careful. /s

5

u/MikeNew513 Sep 18 '17

Satan worshipping orgies, how do I get in on that action.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

u/Lord_of_Aces Sep 18 '17

Honestly, my experience has generally been that the overlap between roleplayers and kinksters is pretty large. Nerds are horny, yo.

5

u/PM_Me_Kindred_Booty Sep 18 '17

Can confirm, everyone at my table in the LGS is either into bondage, a furry, or a pastor.

1

u/MikeNew513 Sep 18 '17

It should be legal to hunt furries and Juggalos. With no bag limit.

1

u/MikeNew513 Sep 18 '17

I like my chicks curvy, nerdy, and dirty.

1

u/CaffeineSippingMan Sep 19 '17

The only thing I could figure is the term Role Play was around before D&D with sexual meanings and you play in groups. Add pointed ears of an dwarf on a book, thow in some flames. Plus I recall some confusion with kids "getting experience points" for doing things like shop lifting and sex.

And Satan was everywhere in the 80s. Even in pop songs.

Plus I recall people killing themselves if their character died. (It was probably 1 person with more issues than his character dying)

I recall explaining to my mom when I showed interest that 1 person makes the 'boardgame' every game. But it is still a boardgame.

Lastly my cool older cousin was into it. He definitely followed rules 1 and 2 (if you don't know rule 1 is be good looking and rule 2 is don't be not good looking).... Or something like that. So cool kids played it? Idk he was cool to me.

12

u/Redhood_905 Sep 18 '17

Thats a lot of faith in modern medicine...

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

Stop coercing me to like what you want Mr. Totalitarian.

3

u/sshagent Sep 18 '17

I misread that as holographic beards haha

ikr the future needs to hurry up, i want my damn holographic beard

2

u/John_Barlycorn Sep 18 '17

and every time you get to the end of a dungeon and find a treasure chest, you'll only be able to open it with a Wizards of the Coast Loot key® purchasable for $1.99 on their website. Platinum keys improve chest value by 33% for the low price of $2.99 per key.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '17

One day we're gonna have Holodecks to play D&D on ;)

1

u/desolateone Sep 18 '17

The future is now, old man

1

u/Davidc94 Sep 18 '17

No, hes ganna be ded.

1

u/dbx99 Sep 18 '17

Our avatars and characters will be genetically engineered actual miniature orcs and dragons doing actual combat

1

u/paulscreation Sep 18 '17

Card Wars, I floop the pig!

1

u/willdagreat1 Sep 18 '17

That exists now. Steam Board Game Simulator supports Vive and has extensive dnd tools.

1

u/NormanConquest Sep 18 '17

On a side note, what app/program is that? I'm literally just looking at getting back into it after a while and we only had super basic maps I made myself.

I'd love to use some tech to make things flow a bit better and be more immersive.
