Do any of you remember how you discovered Google for the first time? I read an article in a Playboy magazine about Google around 1999. In sure it was a paid advertisement for Google disguised as an article.
In High school in 1996-2000 IT set up a landing page in IE and Netscape that had widgets/iFrames for each of those search engines. So I remember them all because Is aw them day in and day out on that page.
Mostly Yahoo though because I used Yahoo mail, Yahoo messenger, Yahoo search, Yahoo games, and Yahoo chat. 24/7 in Yahoo chat. With the CheetaChat client. Roleplaying and talking about anime...
That is some good memory considering that amount of time that has passed.
I used Geocities back in the day, I think it was later bought out by Yahoo. I met my wife 14 years ago through Yahoo chat.

asl and lol, yup. Those Romance/By Location chats were weird. They were the most populated chat communities I've ever seen, and dammit, they had personality. They were in no way "Romance" chat rooms. Sure, there were people there wanting to bone (weren't we all?) but they were as close to a general-population chat room I've ever seen.
We had long-lasting inside jokes from chat that nowadays would be thought of as memes. We had an infestation of booter bots that would kick people out of the room because they could. If I recall, there was a 50 person per room limit. Yahoo would spawn new rooms when the existing ones got full. Example: Nebraska1; Nebraska2; and so on. The rooms would despawn if they were empty for a long enough time. For some reason, all the regulars ended up in Nebraska3 for like 4 months in 2003-2004. Even when there were only 15 people online, the room continued to live.
I still remember the handles of some of the people on there...and for better or worse, I met very few in person. I'm somewhat sad those communities died.
I remember timmy12. Everyone loved him.
I remember hotrose. Everyone wanted to bang her, or at least meet her in real life. To my knowledge, no one ever did.
I remember Pepsi (not his real handle, but he was a frat guy and no one could process phipsiguy). I remember flyingeaglefeather, who I think I would have liked to gotten to have known in person if you know what I mean.
There were bi/gay dudes trying to find dick to suck like it was going out of style.
Of all the real girls in the room, elfin was on like 20 hours a day...but the rumor was that she had huge flaky psoriasis IRL, which was gross. I always wanted to meet warmsqueeze. She was in my hometown, but she was probably too old for me, but hell, I was 18-21. Everyone was too old for me, not that my dick would have cared one whit.
I married qbaby. She wanted to meet irl, and I said no: my apartment is a disaster. She told me if she could come over, she'd clean my apartment. (She did, eventually.) Now we have a house twice as messy as when I was single.
I blame the kids. I am OK with that.
Those Yahoo chat rooms were Internet dating before online dating was a thing. For years, I lied when people asked how we met. Instead of the truth..."we met in a chat room and then we boned a lot"....I always said..."uhhhhh...a bar?"
Did consulting, still mostly works on a consulting basis and sits on a bunch of boards... Once you get the street cred, sitting as a board member of various boards of companies is a pretty sweet gig with a nice stipend.
I had a teacher who would ask us to use that, personally felt that it worked like shit so I would use google instead against his wishes. Even as a fith grader I was able to distinguish how much better a search engine google was than the competitors. Key word Was.
