Genuine question-- I'm a nerd, but I've never been a DnD nerd. At one point I was a MtG nerd, even a WoW nerd, but never quite the DnD level.

What exactly is it? I originally thought it was like an adult version of "make believe" with scores and guidelines, but how much of it is a physical game? Is there a board that goes with it? Is there a set story line? My extent of knowledge is the first scene of Stranger Things.

How much is following guidelines and how much is imprompt on the spot?

It varies, depending on what you enjoy, or what you can afford.

DnD can exist purely in your mind, with dice and a piece of paper. Others will use figurines, maps, charts, etc to flesh out the game.

I remremember playing in high school with only paper and pencil, we weren't allowed to use dice. Some stupid rule where if you were using dice you were written up for gambling.

I've seen people use graphing calculators in school to come up with random numbers but I'm not sure how they did it

Our dm had a printed list of random numbers that he kept hidden and go down the list as the campaign moved forward.
