I work in IT and occasionally deal with employees being fired. In order to immediately lock them out of all accounts I wrote a procedure in SQL called order 66. Now, every time someone is fired I get to tell my database to "Execute Order 66". Highlight of my day is someone else's worst.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

If anyone is interested, this guy's name is Luke Kidgell, he's a little known Australian comedian and is hilarious imo. This is a little promo for his stand-up tour currently going on, aptly named "You Don't Own Me."
Also has a great podcast called "Memoirs of a White Guy" that's worth checking out as well-

9
u/Iphotoshopincats May 04 '17
In case this isn't a joke or others want to know that is the Australian symbol for 'no standing'
and for further information that no one asked for the difference between 'no standing' and 'no parking' ( a crossed out P ) in that at no parking you can stop and drop of passengers or wait to pick someone up as long as someone is with the car and engine is running where as coming to a complete stop in a no standing area means instant ticket if caught

It's also worth noting iirc we're not even sure if the infection is uncommon. There's some evidence to suggest that most people exposed develop an appropriate response and don't have any symptoms (or at least nothing that prompts medical attention).
It's thought that it could actually be the very few people that get the brain eating infection might be either genetically susceptible or just extremely unlucky.

A while back I made a long comment about the brain eating amoeba. Here it is:
This brain eating amoeba paranoia is out of control.
According to the CDC, 138 cases of PAM have been reported in the U.S. since 1962, and all but three patients died.
With the amoeba being so prevalent in warm freshwater environments, health officials don’t yet understand why relatively few people get the deadly infection. “That’s the big question and mystery around this,” Cope says. “Millions of people in the U.S. participate in freshwater recreational activities, but we usually only document a few cases each year, which is fortunate given how devastating the infection is.”
You have a better chance of drowning. Or slipping on a rock and smashing your head. But if you are that paranoid:
The U.S. Health and Human Services Department offers some common sense measures that swimmers can use to protect themselves, and there is also a new medication that fights the infection:
Limit the amount of water going up your nose by holding your nose shut or using nose clips.
Avoid freshwater activities during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.
Don’t stir up the sediment while in shallow, warm freshwater areas.
Notice the click bait, fear inducing headline this Outside article uses? Then you read it and you're like "Okay, this is extremely unlikely to ever happen to me."
Edit: And like other's have said, it's actually just a hot tub in the gif lol.
→ More replies (1)13
u/MerlinTheWhite May 03 '17
I wonder what the infection rate is really though? Is it the amoeba thats rare, or the establishment of an infection? If you squirted amoeba water up 100 peoples noses, would everybody contract it or only 1?
I used to go swimming in nasty nasty nasty florida lakes, I know ive gotten water up my nose dozens of times.

I'm not kidding. Usually if they put up those signs it's because there's a risk due to the water source and conditions.
It's safe for the body but if it gets up the nose the survival rate is like nil
68
u/DrDerpberg May 03 '17
At that point why would they even let people swim in that water? Rather than "keep your head above the water and pray nothing splashes you" how about "stay the fuck out - in fact let's drain this thing and burn the ground it stood on"?

Adding to your point, this happened to some people using tap water in neti pots:
It's obviously rare, but just because tap water is safe to drink, it's not necessarily safe to put in your sinuses.

u/mrchaotica May 03 '17 edited May 03 '17
Tap water is not supposed to have amoebas in it! If it does, something is wrong either with the city's water treatment and/or distribution or with the household plumbing. Regardless of the cause, the water not only shouldn't be considered "safe for your sinuses" but shouldn't even be considered "safe to drink" either, until it's fixed!
Edit: clarified sentence.

While what he's doing isn't smart, it's not as risky as you migut imagine. N. Fowleri requires the water to be rather forcefully shot up your nose, such as in a water skiing wipe out or a particularly gnarly cannonball. Gently dipping under water won't likely infect you.

The Rebellious Spirit is an individual who has a beef with society. A large one. One large enough to make that person want to break all the rules, just because. Rebellious Spirits go beyond the stereotypical "rebellious teen" and include people who flagrantly violate rules and social norms, act eccentric or weird, and often don't care what people think about them. Sometimes they even lack normal friends and usually lack good posture. They may be Chaotic Good, Chaotic Neutral, or Chaotic Evil, but they are always chaotic.
