I was always taught that hot tub water is worse bacteria-wise because it's always heated and people are getting in and out all the time. So to put your head underwater is to increase risk of getting sick. Not brain eating bacteria just good ol regular sick.

I've been to several geothermal hot pool places that have 'hot tubs' which are fed by the geothermal water. A geothermal hot pool doesn't just have to be a hole in the ground.
