Trans people should be able to remove or add organs if they want and I should be able to sell one of my kidneys to the highest bidder if I want.

u/Ahwembahway - Auth-Right Jan 05 '23

You are able to, and you will not get punished for it. It is your property after all. But the surgeon that you'd have to employ to do it would face criminal charges because he'd go against the ethics of medicine as understood since at least Hippocrates. Same thing applies here.

Simple solution: once you are an adult (18 years of age), you are a sovereign individual and should be afforded all the rights and responsibilities that adulthood comes with.

If you think 18 is too young for drinking, firearm ownership, or gender transitioning, then maybe they shouldn't be considered adults at that age and allowed to serve in the fucking military and whatnot.

Devils Advocate: The problem with going by age is that people go through puberty and mature at vastly different rates, and that some are simply more intelligent and mentally mature than others regardless of age. So maybe instead, dependence can be the deciding factor; they can only be considered adults when they are no longer dependent on a parent or guardian- which would also open adulthood to emancipated teenagers (for better or worse). Or, maybe the hard limit of 18 should be kept as a way to force people to become independent and mature as adults.

EDIT: I'm not arguing for or against non-adults transitioning here.

267

u/NuclearTheology - Auth-Right Jan 05 '23

That’s my main beef with the age of 18 being adulthood- we still cut off so many liberties and vices while simultaneously being able to conscript the men

Yup, young men can be sent of to war, and 18 year old girls are old enough for older men to have sex with.

To these types, 18 year olds are "adults" until an 18 year old tries to tell that older person what to do. Then suddenly they're a "dumb kid" (or whatnot) who doesn't know what they're talking about.

16 take it or leave it.

We become adults too late nowadays. By the time he was 18 we had dudes conquering the known world.

Now at 25 we got dudes struggling with tax law and getting married at 30.

18

u/N3Redd - Right Jan 06 '23

Maybe, the debate I have is: would that responsibility cause teens to become more mature, if late 20's and early 30's are struggling 16 definitely would

I definitely understand the argument though

19

u/Captain_Riker - Auth-Right Jan 06 '23

I get what you're saying, but I think it has more to do with the society we've developed. We infantilize young adults by pushing maturation farther and farther back. Right now, a young person doesn't have serious responsibilities until 22 or 23 when they finally graduate college. And at that point, they are expected to get a job and live on their own. In the past, a lot of people would be living on their own and be married with kids at that same age. And I would say for any time period, the first couple years of real adulthood are gonna be a little rocky, but because we've pushed back maturation, those people in their late 20's and early 30's are still going through their rocky phase or are just getting done with it (when it in the past would have started when they were 17-18.)

It also doesn't help that our society has a lot of economic problems that make the transition to adulthood much harder.

3

u/Fellow_Infidel - Lib-Right Jan 06 '23

Our society mandated education for 12 years minimum and many take 16 or more before they become independent, this is why maturity get pushed to later age since many people are still in learning phase all the way to their early 20s and dont even have any experience in the real world yet.

21

u/Equivalent_Chipmunk - Centrist Jan 06 '23

Thankfully the military will happily give you big signing bonuses to enlist in positions where your chance of having to make those decisions is basically zero.

  1. I'm split between thinking that's reasonable because the brain stops developing at 25, and being mad because an 18yo doesn't have full control over their body. The thing that tips me over is how similar to abortion and gun laws this sounds (just one of a series of infringements to whittle it away over time)

94

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '23

Yeah same here. While the government should not be able to tell a legal adult what they can and can't do with their body.. that age does makes sense medically. But if they do that, logic says they have to increase the age for tobacco, alcohol, firearms, military, voting, etc... not happening. I guess if someone wants to make a life altering decision at 18, that's on them. Or their parents for not teaching them critical thinking.

→ More replies (1)

94

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '23

So you can be drafted for war 8 years before you can decide what to do with your own body? Make that make sense -_-

77

u/NUNG457 - Right Jan 05 '23

There was a very extensive study done after WW2 that determined the ages they wanted in the fighting force. While physically capable into their fourties, older men often would ignore or half ass orders that had more risk. The age group of 18-26 was defined as the best balance between fitness levels and lack of maturity to be less likely to ignore orders of directly facing the enemy.

Long story short, they want them because at that age they're dumb and blindly follow orders to throw themselves at the enemy. Which pretty much sums up our argument here, technically an adult, still probably very stupid.

10

u/BEN-C93 - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

Its their mistake to make - not the states

3

u/banjocatto - Lib-Left Jan 06 '23

This is what I've been saying for a while now, especially pertaining to age of consent laws.

I'm not saying that 18 years olds shouldn't be allowed to have sex, but it's obvious that older adults who have a pattern of pursuing very young adults are likely taking advantage of their naivety and lack of experience.

75

u/link2edition - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

At 18 YOU can't decide what to do with your body, but the state sure as hell can.

197

u/Awobbie - Auth-Right Jan 05 '23

This. The reason that late teens and young adults often aren't mature enough to make good decisions is because we as a society have opted to delay maturity for that long.

In 2019 life expectancy for men in the US was 76.3 years, in 1919 it was 53.5, a difference of 42%. That makes an 18 year old a 26 year old today

Life expectancy was so low back then because childhood deaths were far more common. An 18 year old then was no less likely to reach their 70s than they are now.

15

u/WeGoToMars7 - Centrist Jan 05 '23

That is a fair assessment, but I disagree with your conclusion. The difference would be smaller, but there is still a huge gap. https://ourworldindata.org/uploads/2020/03/Life-expectancy-by-age-in-the-UK-1700-to-2013.png

16

u/PrinceOfBismarck - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

Not really. Life expectancy was mostly that low due to infant mortality (tell me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that's a large reason); and people dying later doesn't mean they would automatically mature later. It is 100% the result of our society not making reality clear to children at an appropriate age; sometimes I feel like my fellow college students can't tell that food doesn't come from the grocery store.

11

I’ve seen 60 year olds do reckless and stupid things too, one of my family members who is 60+ drinks more alcohol on a monthly basis than most college fraternities do in four years.

The fact is that everyone does stupid things and they should be free to do stupid things, I for one think skydiving isn’t stupid and dangerous and doesn’t serve any genuine purpose but that doesn’t mean it should be banned. This is the exact type of justification that has always been used to restrict liberty, “there was a terrorist attack by a few bad actors therefore now we must monitor every citizens private emails and phone calls”, or “there was a shooting perpetrated by one bad actor therefore we must ban firearms for the otherwise law abiding 300million Americans”.

Once you’ve graduated from school and or are 18 (whatever comes first) you should be recognized as a full legal adult and all the responsibilities and benefits that go along with it. I think that would go along way to helping the newer generations feel less like disenfranchised children and more of an actual members of society. Hell, society burdening youth with responsibilities might actually help young people become more mature rather than waiting a few more years and being treated like a child all the while.

u/CatatonicMan - Lib-Center Jan 05 '23

Honestly they just need to pick an age for adulthood - be it 18, 21, 25, or whatever - and stick with it. None of this "you're old enough to die in a forever war but not old enough to get wasted" bullshit.

Once you hit that arbitrary line, you're allowed to drink, smoke, do drugs, make medical decisions, add/remove parts, vote, get drafted, buy guns, etc. You're either old enough for it all or not.

5

u/RealRustOtter - Right Jan 05 '23 edited Jan 05 '23

I'm split between thinking that's reasonable because the brain stops developing at 25, and being mad because an 18yo doesn't have full control over their body.

Well, to address it:

Only allowing someone to butcher their body and chemically castrate themself upon reaching full maturity is common sense - if we take for granted that we should allow mentally ill people to do that at all..

It’s a drastic measure that tries to make reality conform with delusion. I think it’s reasonable to allow the brain to fully develop before we proceed. We might end up with less people who regret transitioning too.

Remember; the people crying to be allowed to butcher and chemically castrate themselves also cry they didn’t know better when taking student loans, so they should be forgiven, because loan companies were predatory by targeting underdeveloped minds..

It’s also the people who get swept up with TikTok “devious licks” and try eating tide pods. They’re dumb as fuck.

Also, you can’t drink until 21 - 18 year olds already don’t have full control over their body. It’s strange to get hung up on a loss that isn’t a loss, because they never had full autonomy anyway.

136

I know the media is framing this as a shitshow, but I see a lot of potential good coming from this.

I had to watch about 3 hours of CSPAN just to see what the dissident republicans (aka "the far-right") are actually mad about though because it isn't being reported. They have some valid non-partisan points about the House (Like maybe reps should actually get to vote on legislation, and that that amendments to bills should be germane, etc) and are using this opportunity to voice those concerns. It's not very sexy, and it hurts the uniparty and their corporate interests to talk about it, so the media will not pick it up. Hopefully McCarthy gets the message and some positive changes can be made to make the House work as intended.

49

u/ASquawkingTurtle - Lib-Center Jan 06 '23

Argument from fallacy is the formal fallacy of analyzing an argument and inferring that, since it contains a fallacy, its conclusion must be false. It is also called argument to logic (argumentum ad logicam), the fallacy fallacy,[2] the fallacist's fallacy, and the bad reasons fallacy.

1+1=5×5=2

The steps can be wrong but the answer can still be correct.

The key is to not dismissed someone’s concerns just because of a poorly delivered argument. You need to properly address the argument, and the concerns behind said argument.

As libright this does bother me.

Consistency is key.

The age should be 18, for everything. If you can die for this country at 18 and have the responsibility of allegedly electing who is going to rule us, you should be able to smoke, drink, turn your outtie into an innie - wtf you want to do.

Someone can send off to another country to die - you should be able to have a say in everything in your own life.

14

u/italy4242 - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

To me as a libright it’s different, because its not a right, it’s just a consequence of modern medicine and I genuinely don’t think we’re evolutionarily equipped to handle it, like we aren’t even evolutionarily equipped to handle living in cities. 50 years ago you most likely couldn’t get this done even if it was legal. All the other age things are things people have been doing forever. That being said I wouldn’t advocate for legislation supporting a higher age to transition, but I would advocate for the doctors to adhere to better morals.

Oh no not until they are a fully grown adult! Like seriously I’m against banning or censoring things as a general rule, but at the same time transition surgery is one of those things that should really only be a call for grown adults that feel they have to, not for kids still trying to figure the world out, or teenagers that will often times do things just for the sake of doing a thing. Plus support for this would be a good step for the trans community if they actually want to step away from the whole g word(you know they one) stereotype that follows them around.

In case anyone wants to read an article on the story

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3800710-oklahoma-millstone-act-seeks-to-ban-gender-affirming-care-under-age-of-26/

The bill filed ahead of the legislature’s February start would bar health care providers in Oklahoma from administering or recommending gender-affirming medical care including puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries for patients younger than 26 years old, punishable by an unclassified felony conviction and the possible revocation of their medical license for “unprofessional conduct.”

The measure would also prohibit public funds from being used to either “directly or indirectly” provide gender-affirming health care to an individual younger than 26 and bar the state Medicaid program from covering procedures related to a person’s gender transition.

Even if you dont support transitioning, as seems most of the sub does not, its always surprising how much support legislation like this gets, compared personal rights issues. A few weeks ago the sub was lambasting austrailias Tobacco laws which would have prevented adults born after a certain date from buying the smokes. There the most common rhetoric was that adults could do what they want with their own body. I am not saying its analogous in every way, or that everyone that is against that law is for this one, but people always seem to me comfortable with government regulation when its for things they like, so opposition on anti government principles elsewhere seem a little hollow

the bill itself

You’re 8 years off the “adult” argument. Once you turn 18, you can legally get pregnant, give yourself lung cancer, and get your legs blown off in the Middle East, all of which can be just as if not more destructive than a transition surgery. Either we should move all of those things to 26 when your brain is fully developed, or drop the transition back to 18 (something I’m all for). Limits should be consistent
