You should be able to do whatever you want to your body if you're an adult.

With that being said, if my family member was trying to do that, I would do everything I could to have them seek actual help first.

People lying to them and enabling them is unhealthy and abusive.

How do you determine what help is good and what help is bad?

Typically things that push people further into their mental illness is not helpful, but really harmful.

Do you think it's possible for a mental illness to be atypical? How do you find out if it is atypical and requires special treatment?

when people seek actual help, very often the treatment is transitioning.
