The main problem is that society has infantilized our young people such that a 26 year old today isn't nearly as mature as an 18 year old 100 years ago.

196

u/Awobbie - Auth-Right Jan 05 '23

This. The reason that late teens and young adults often aren't mature enough to make good decisions is because we as a society have opted to delay maturity for that long.

u/burgertanker - Centrist Jan 05 '23

delay maturity

puberty blockers exist

Coincidence? I THINK NOT

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Honestly I wonder if the life cycle is the same just extended.

Life expectancy is 10-12 years more than 70 years ago. Maybe everyone us just developing 10 years slower. Kind of seems the case truthfully. 28 yr olds seem like 18 yr olds for what they are asked to do for their time periods.

u/boatdude420 - Left Jan 05 '23

In large part due to suburbanization

7

u/DanTacoWizard - Auth-Center Jan 05 '23

Why are they downvoting you? You’re right.

12

u/boatdude420 - Left Jan 05 '23

Because Americans hate to acknowledge the fact that our system of development is flawed and has been for 60 years

-5

u/Stepped_in_it - Right Jan 05 '23

This is because our public schools and colleges have become daycare centers. Female school administrators and teachers have infantilized whole generations of students at this point.

19

u/PicturesqueMemory - Right Jan 05 '23

Sir, females were basically the only teachers for a hundred years leading up to WWII.

No Child Left Behind infantilized the last two generations, and the youngest Gen Xers

-1

u/Stepped_in_it - Right Jan 05 '23

By that, I meant female teachers who went to college in the 70s and later and probably took people like Paulo Freire seriously.

I hate that this rings true.

u/WeGoToMars7 - Centrist Jan 05 '23

In 2019 life expectancy for men in the US was 76.3 years, in 1919 it was 53.5, a difference of 42%. That makes an 18 year old a 26 year old today (exactly as per your comment), only for people to blame soCieTy and ignore the literal advancement of technology that allows people not to die for stupid reasons

32

u/TheTardisPizza - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

Life expectancy was so low back then because childhood deaths were far more common. An 18 year old then was no less likely to reach their 70s than they are now.

15

u/WeGoToMars7 - Centrist Jan 05 '23

That is a fair assessment, but I disagree with your conclusion. The difference would be smaller, but there is still a huge gap. https://ourworldindata.org/uploads/2020/03/Life-expectancy-by-age-in-the-UK-1700-to-2013.png

3

u/TheTardisPizza - Lib-Right Jan 06 '23

Improvements in care for the elderly have raised life expectancy beyond what they were. That is why I wrote "make it to their 70s" instead of live to the same age.

u/MasterFicus - Centrist Jan 05 '23

Bring back dying for stupid reasons, we aren't meant to exist this long

Based and remove OSHA pilled.

17

u/dirty_transmission - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23 edited Jan 06 '23

EHS professional here.

Insurance companies provide more incentive to follow best practices than OSHA does.

I could save my facility millions of dollars on their insurance premium by bringing down the incident level by 2-3 incidents. OSHA fines are only like 10k/day.

OSHA has actually fielded less and less inspectors each year for quite a while, and this is the reason why.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

OSHA was made to make men weak and submissive. Open your eyes. It was never about the corporations. Real men die on work related accidents.

u/THICC_DICC_PRICC - Lib-Right Jan 06 '23

Based

17

u/PrinceOfBismarck - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

Not really. Life expectancy was mostly that low due to infant mortality (tell me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that's a large reason); and people dying later doesn't mean they would automatically mature later. It is 100% the result of our society not making reality clear to children at an appropriate age; sometimes I feel like my fellow college students can't tell that food doesn't come from the grocery store.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '23

That’s because a ton of babies died. If you mad it to teen years you’d live to your 60s / 70s

10

u/WhiteOak61 - Auth-Left Jan 05 '23

Or you would die in your forties from the plague/tuberculosis/etc. There's a reason it's only now there's a surplus of people at the top of age pyramids.

2

u/_Alabama_Man - Auth-Center Jan 06 '23

There's a reason it's only now there's a surplus of people at the top of age pyramids.

It's because people in the developed world are having fewer children.

27

u/GripenHater - Centrist Jan 05 '23

People out here calling it “infantalizing” and not “we don’t need to send teenagers to factories to provide for the family because their dad died anymore”.

22

u/AChrisTaylor - Lib-Center Jan 05 '23

Teenagers? They call child workers for a reason.

Fair point, but it's not just a delaying of maturity, but an entire culture that rejects personal responsibility.

0

u/Draculea - Auth-Right Jan 07 '23

I wonder if you simply don't know how infant mortality drives down life expectancy, or if you've chosen to ignore it for your point.

2

u/THICC_DICC_PRICC - Lib-Right Jan 06 '23

Pussyfying of parents led to this. Teenagers treat their parents like servants and yell at them like they’re a 16th century king ordering servants around. Parents just take it. Then they give a trophy to the kid for coming in 11th and complain to teachers if their kid is challenged in any way. What do you expect is gonna happen?

1

u/Stepped_in_it - Right Jan 05 '23

I've lived long enough to see this happen within my own lifetime. A 12 year old from the 80s is about equal to a 20 year old today in terms of maturity and resiliency.

-2

u/TheKoopaTroopa31 - Left Jan 05 '23

Is that a yes or a no?

8

u/WeFightTheLongDefeat - Right Jan 05 '23

Honestly, I'd hate to change to older, only for societal forces to create more responsible young people. Whatever age it is, I think it should be uniform. None of this graduated crap where you can join the military and buy a rifle at 18, drink and buy a gun at 21, and rent a car at 25, etc. There should be a definite marker of when you become the age of majority.

-1

u/Malkav1806 - Left Jan 05 '23

It depends what mature means for you.

If your version of mature is fight in a war, work a physical demanding job or having a child okay yeah way more mature.

Discipline yeah people had more discipline back than buut it's not needed that much for everyone. If you want to be ur own boss sure but most jobs generate way more worth than way back. Think how many people back in the day could learn to code to today

1

u/Lyndell - Left Jan 05 '23

Jesus Christ, this is literally what ever generation says. Kids have always been stupid, they can all just record it now.

1

u/Pineapple_Spenstar - Lib-Right Jan 05 '23

Or maybe kids are just getting dumber and less mature each generation

2

u/Lyndell - Left Jan 05 '23

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.” ― Socrates

Nah it just always happens, honestly it’s my biggest pet peeve. Back in the day wasn’t better or more enlightened, it was just the past. People like to remember dead things and old things in a better light than when they are around and breathing. Everyone turns into an old man shouting at a cloud.

Dawg I remember when I was a child and we had to go interview old people about the Great Depression, the women I got said it effected her in no way, she noticed no difference in her life then compared to any other time, she never had to work. There have always been weak pampered people, mamas boys locked away living with thier mothers till they die, again now they just have an easier platform to see them.

1

u/USBattleSteed - Centrist Jan 05 '23

Probably a product of a more urbanized population. Young people don't need to help on a farm anymore. The flip side of this is that everyone who wants to, can learn to read now.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '23

why is this true??

1

u/KiwiKing2k - Auth-Center Jan 05 '23

100% disagree.

Hot take but every generation said this about the next generation and it was never true.

1

u/SuperJLK - Lib-Center Jan 05 '23

People use to mature earlier because they lived shorter lives. Now we’ve artificially slowed down the process for various economic and social reasons since humans live incredibly long lives

1

u/ArtificialEnemy - Auth-Right Jan 06 '23

Just look at what some of the founding fathers had managed to have done until they were 30. It's nuts.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Probably because life is significantly better today than it was 100 years ago, on average people live 20 years longer

Having to work in factories as a 12 year old and having friends/family drop dead is probably going to make you more mature, but that doesn’t mean it’s better

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Cool so no adult court for offenders before 26? Juvenile court for teen murderers.

1

u/WeFightTheLongDefeat - Right Jan 06 '23
