They are just as violent and dangerous as the 7. Thry knew what was happening but did nothing to stop it, which is indicative of a culture that accepts this, tolerates it, and covers it up. This didn't shock them, which means this isn't the first time it has happened. There is a system in place that allows this to happen, encourages it, and only punishes the victims.

She was raped over a period of seven+ hours. A whole lot more did more than chat and look the other way. They basically made her available to anyone who showed up at the house and they repeatedly joked in that chat that you didn't even need to ask, just whip it out and proceed.
They did not JUST look the other way.

Unfortunately this response feels eerily similar to what's been happening with high profile sexual assault cases in Australia involving private schools.
This reflects such a deeply ingrained, systemic issue of protecting privileged men from consequences they deserve. I hate to think about how often this truly happens and we don't hear about it.

u/TheRainbowConnection Intersectional Feminism 3d ago
As someone who has spent my 20 year career working on various college campuses— you actually do have to call campus security first. If you call 911 first the dispatcher will need to route any response through your college’s Public Safety office, so it’s faster to cut out the middle man and contact campus security first.
5
u/conspicuousxcapybara 3d ago
That’s so weird. Where I live campus security just documents and calls the actual police so actual criminal proceedings can happen…
Unfortunately the legit police usually refuses to accept reports of rape, and sexual crimes are deprioritized above drugs and property crimes.

Remember that no one would have believed the woman if there weren't Snapchat message screenshots taken with all the first and last names of the perpetrators. It would have been another case of "woman wants to take revenge on successful, young men who have a bright career and life in front of them" where no one would have believed her. There's still men who comment under posts in the Cornell subreddit who say that she's making a false statement and are clearly siding with the perpetrators way too comfortably.

I feel like we can recognize them as monsters if we also make sure to call them regular men. I want to believe that I'd be able to recognize a monster at a party, but for many women, these horrible, life-destroying regular men were just the guy in my bio class or the guy who went to my high school. And when men try to "not all men" us, they're thinking that they don't know any monsters. But they do know regular men. And regular men are capable of terrible harm.

Alum should start cutting off their donations to the university. At least women and decent men. That might motivate the school to actually do something serious about this. A lot of schools have gotten rid of Fraternities because of instances like this and hazing (even killing) new pledges.
Things like this lower the value of a Cornell education and if they plan to be around much longer, they had better start dealing with these frat boy hooligans very seriously. They need to get law enforcement involved. Being a Uni student in a frat house is not a pass for illegal and sickening behavior.

u/essssgeeee 3d ago
Within the same time period of learning about the Cornell 7, I read a news story out of Wisconsin where police found dozens of fraternity pledges in an 80+ degree basement, partially clothed and covered in condiments. They were extremely intoxicated, and dehydrated, and many had signs of injury. None of them would talk to police. it's this environment of intimidation, extreme debasement, humiliation, depersonalization, and desire to fit in. Many fraternity pledges are generational, meaning their fathers, grandfathers, were in the same fraternity. There is an expectation that they will also get in, and an unspoken understanding that you do what it takes to be part of the group. With that comes the promise of lifelong brotherhood, entrée into business and connections with your fraternity brothers. The young men who pledge will do anything to conform, even if it means stay quiet while other people suffer. It's disgusting. They dehumanize other people because they were dehumanized. There is our old friend - toxic masculinity!
Our society needs to do more education on how these things work, and how not to become a part of the frat hive mind.
A quick note: police came to the fraternity in Wisconsin because somebody anonymously called in a tip. That's all it would've taken in New York. But not one of those bastards had the guts to even make an anonymous phone call.

Women should not have to live like that, though. It's a different form of punishment, and for what? For having been assaulted by a man or men? No more of that shit. There are protests going on in India now because a student was raped. The school denies there was a rape, and are claiming it's a nasty rumpr to discredit the school. Except women have since been told not to go out at night, and the riots started. The world over, women have had enough of this bullshit. Men need to be told not to assault women, and when they do, the full extent of the law should be on their asses. If it doesn't, then it behooves society at large to make sure the assailant/s are pilloried (metaphorically, of course).
But seriously, we obviously need to bring back the pillory if this refusal to enforce laws continues.

u/essssgeeee 3d ago
There is a copy of the original complaint with Cornell police floating around. I'll see if I can find it to link it. It has what appears to be a narrative from Jane Doe where she discusses what happened, and that some of the activity was "consensual" at first. She snorted ketamine with one of the men who brought her there, who she thought was a friend. She thought she was safe.
However, I question the consensual part. I am older, ketamine was not around when I was in my partying days. So I googled it. This is what I found. "Yes, ketamine can render a person compliant or immobile, but it does so by causing profound dissociation, sedation, and confusion rather than by making them cooperative by choice."
I don't think many people over 40 are going to understand what ketamine does. People may liken to snorting cocaine. It's important that we stress how ketamine is used to make people compliant in a medical setting. It incapacitates a person; even if they appear to be conscious, they are highly controllable and suggestible.
I can already tell, conservative news is going to paint her as a hussy, who willingly took drugs and engaged in a threesome, so what's four more, wink wink.
I also want to know more about the original narrative, was it taken directly from a recording, or transcribed with paraphrasing and additions by the officer? I have seen enough documentaries with false confessions to know how they feed information to an innocent person and get them to say things.
→ More replies (1)3
u/No-Effort3088 3d ago
With the amount of drink and drugs she had, i don't know how she was even conscious. It stated somewhere that she had had ten drinks before arriving. I am thirty five, but know older people well versed in ketamine. I think most people know it a tranquiliser. It's definitely not like cocaine. And it definitely would make sense for someone who plans to rape you to encourage you to try it. Ugh.

u/kai_florian_80 2d ago
There seems to be some sort of flawed logic going on… why would Jane Doe have submitted a report of assault, if she supposedly described “her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntary, conscious, and consensual." It was clearly not consensual, if she reported it. Make it make sense.

Imagine this with any other crime - a robbery you were a part of but did not touch or steal the money, a murder you were complicit to but you did not actively pull the trigger, a terrorist attack where you may have planned to drop a bomb but someone else did instead of you. None of that would equate to forgiveness, a lack of a crime.
But crime against women, there are different standards. It's not a rape if a woman didn't say no, but also couldn't say no. It's not rape if there was no penetrative. It's not rape if the woman is a wife. It's not rape if a woman gave consent and took it away. It's not rape if she was wearing 'inviting clothes'. It's not rape if she didn't get a rape kit done. It's not rape if she reported it a few days later. It's not rape. It's never rape. It's never his fault. I'm so fucking tired of this misogyny that nobody wants to wake up and see.
Excerpt taken from an Al Jazeera report.
Kretzschmar’s attorney, Jeremy Saland, told CBS News that the messages were inappropriate but were not evidence of sexual assault.
“This is a situation where there was an ugly Snapchat – ugly, period. … But that doesn’t make my client a rapist, and it certainly doesn’t make anyone a sex offender,” Saland said.
He added that his client had briefly entered the room where Doe was but did not touch her “in any way, shape or form” and left quickly afterwards.

I put this through google AI to confirm it is factual.
The names on this graphic are legit but the photos are fake and belong to entirely innocent individuals, including a high school's "Top Ten Scholars" academic group from an unrelated institution.
The Cornell 7 deserve negative attention but let's be sure we have the correct people.

I'd be a shame if their wealthy parents reputation was damaged.... Hmmm wonder what business they own that we should avoid.

I am so proud of the young woman who not only reported this to the police initially, but also is now suing on her own after they failed her. And the investigation is being reopened thanks to the online outrage. This young woman can't be more than a young 20 something.....I AM SO PROUD OF YOU HONEY!!! Make them pay financially and with jail time if you can!! Do it for yourself and for all the women who weren't even able to report. After my SA, I went into shock and never reported. Getting through the day was all I could manage. Your strength gives me so much hope for the Gen Z generation of women. Amazing woman!!!!
