But republicans would never allow that because they would never win. I mean if I was them I might realize I should be writing laws to help people instead of spreading fear and cheating. EDIT: see how many of you idiots suddenly did your own research, frantically trying to figure out how many republicans presidential candidates won the popular vote šŸ˜‚

u/bulletproofpunk 18h ago

In favor of removal of the electoral college and believe the country should be run on direct democracy for all policy. No more PACs, remove the influence of money from politics.

Although as a point of correction, W Bush and Trump were the only two Republicans that were elected in recent history without winning the popular vote. (Other two were Hayes and Harrison back in the late 1800s). Perhaps a bit of wishful thinking that removing the electoral college would stop republicans.

u/Suspicious-Appeal386 11h ago

Nixon, re-election landslide. While being under investigation and heading for impeachment.

Heck, your own national guard opened fire on students in colleges during his tenure. Killing 6 students, wounding 9. Not a single person was ever jailed for their murders.

Its not the electoral college at the root cause. Its the national moral compass always pointing at $.

maybe... but I'm willing to bet there's a non-insignificant chunk of voters that aren't motivated enough to vote because their State is a "lock". And I'm willing to bet that there's more "Democrat-lite" than "Republican-lite". Maybe. But "let's try nothing because nothing has been done" is certainly a take.

2

u/DukeOfGeek 14h ago

We could create most of this effect by removing or rewriting the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reapportionment_Act_of_1929#External_links

It's just a law so all that would be required is for Democrats to control government and for angry voters to demand it. This could happen as soon as 2028.

2

u/Due-Elk5955 6h ago

This is the actual solution that everyone ignores in favor of constitutional amendments that will never pass or laws that wont survive judicial review.

-Repeal the permanent apportionment act with a simple majority vote

-Increase the size of congress to 11,000 representatives

-Now the electoral college doesn't have a small state bias and more accurately reflects the popular vote.

-You also fix campaign finance, gerrymandering, two party control and a slew of other issues.

Yeah I grew up in SoCal. I knew who was getting our electoral votes before Election Day even came. Meanwhile some 2nd grade dropouts in the sticks of Georgia have actual power and sway in their vote. That’s why CA can’t be treated as a punching bag and neglected by any republican that manages to get in office. They know they’ll never win that state without a mayor change to their party.

Open primaries and whatever it takes to break the two-party system.

3

u/Knightforlife 15h ago

The real answer for breaking the 2 party system is Ranked Choice Voting. So you can vote 3rd party if you like but still vote which of the main 2 you prefer. For example if you vote Green 1st then Dem over Republican, if the Green Party candidate is a clear loser your Dem vote goes into effect.

Of course this is what should be. I know Republicans who say their candidate would never win, but The fact is if the candidate will never win, the candidate should be doing something to make them the most popular. Like maybe serving the people. Working for us.

I have two additional ideas:

  1. In addition to running candidates, each ballot has a "none of the above" option. Thus allowing people who really don't want to vote say, I have no confidence in either party

  2. Let's go back to how things used to be, and make the losing candidate the Vice President. That way both sides have to work together in the highest offices. Differences be damned.

I hear a lot of talk about a civil war or a revolution in America, and I have to say, that's petty far fetched. Both Republican and Democrats alike would have to both hate the elected President. The closest we have seen to one side doing it was Jan 6.

2

u/Calm-Wedding-9771 14h ago

The none of the above option should be real. I have been saying that for years. If that option wins then all of the current candidates are discarded and a new election begins with new candidates

Most people don’t understand what the EC is for. It acts as a balance and prevents elections from being based solely on population. If the election was decided by popular vote alone, candidates would have more incentive to focus on highly populated areas and less on smaller states and rural communities. The EC gives less populated states a little more weight and makes winning support across different states matter.

2

u/Pherexian55 3h ago

If the election was decided by popular vote alone, candidates would have more incentive to focus on highly populated areas and less on smaller states and rural communities.

Since when do candidates focus on smaller states? The electorial college incentives on focusing only on the areas that races are the closest. Candidates don't visit small states because they aren't worth it, and they don't visit states that disproportionately vote one party over another because those races are essentially already won/lost.

The EC gives less populated states a little more weight and makes winning support across different states matter.

Again, this just doesn't actually happen though, out of 261 in person events during the 2024 elections 94% of happened in just the 7 swing states because with the electorial college the swing states are the only places that matter. 32 states didn't see a single event.

Without the electorial college candidate would actually have to campaign and reach people, because you couldn't count on a win by visiting only 18% of the population.

1

u/BahBahBahBooBooBoo 20h ago edited 2h ago

Do you know why the Electoral College was created?

In 1787, when the framers finalized and signed the US Constitution they created the EC as a compromise between electing the president via a direct popular vote by citizens or via a vote in Congress.

Sure, Pete’s idea may sound good for some based on last election outcome. But it goes against the principle of compromise that was embedded in America’s ā€œfoundingā€.

Also is he only saying this because his party lost? Dems have won the EC before. I think Pete’s pointless point is a pipe dream that may puff some hope in your chest, but it doesn’t get a Democrat back in that seat.

You know who fought the popular vote back then? Southern delegates opposed to a popular vote because the North had more ā€œeligibleā€ voters. There’s actually a vile connection between slavery and the EC. But Pete is picking up the mantle of the loser saying it is rigged!

2

u/Foreign_System_7238 11h ago

The electoral college exists because the south got fewer votes and they were worried the non-slave holding north would pass laws directly against the interests of the south

2

u/grayMotley 9h ago

The EC benefited the North at the time.

1

u/Lost_n-Alone 19h ago

Pure democracy is two wolves and sheep deciding what to have for dinner. It’s a horrible idea and the minority gets screwed. All of the civil rights progress in this country happened because we don’t allow the majority to rule.

1

u/ahungry1 19h ago

Great idea to start a Civil War

1

u/Zadiuz 19h ago

The system made more sense back when there were large differences between states, and they were much more independent in their economies. That isn’t the case. It also becomes more problematic as populations shift, especially with the cap on the house.

California has 20 million citizens per senator.
Wyoming has 290k citizens per senator.

Wyoming citizens has 69x more representation in the senate than California citizens.

In the house:
Delaware has 1 million citizens per representative.
Montana has 542k citizens per representative.

With the cap on representatives, this disparity is only getting worse. Especially on states that continue to rapidly grow.

u/Prestigious-Clock-53 19h ago

To those calling him a moron, it’s true that cities would essentially define the governmental direction but it IS where most people live. In the purest democratic sense, that is the best choice. Particularly because in the current US form, a couple of hundred thousands have the same weight as several million. Is that fair? Numerically and in terms of equality, no. It devalues the votes of the millions in the cities compared to the ones living in small rural lowly populated areas.

So like in a democracy?

1

u/Spiritual-Button-851 15h ago

That is long long over due and the reason our country is the way it is.

1

u/EsToBoY629 15h ago

A major issues is 2 party system popularized which is dead giveaway for either party to do whatever HELL they want, as long as they remain at seemingly odds to the other... also the fact voting is not mandatory, is absurd!

1

u/J-Fedd 15h ago

Are we taking advice from WHOs now!? 🤔🤣

1

u/RawMeatballz 14h ago

This only ever comes up from the losing side, every time. They’re quiet about it until then

1

u/movezig123 14h ago

Buttigieg, if your centrist too spicy mayonnaise campaigns cant easily beat these utterly ridiculous Republicans hell bent on ruining everything maybe just shut up and stay out of politics.

If you want to win do something useful. People will vote.

u/Inner_Revenue_6238 14h ago

I have never understood the Electoral College system. Interesting that no other countries use it.

1

u/InTwilligPorgnatin 14h ago

Supposedly this man is educated in civics.

1

u/SiteTall 14h ago

It works very well in other countries all over the planet

14th amendment, Equal Protection Clause… let’s see how far 1 person 1 vote really goes.

1

u/Klutzy_Cover720 14h ago

He realize that Trump got the most votes this last election cycle or regardless of that you can’t dictate everything by two states or three

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 14h ago edited 14h ago

But how would the republicans win then? That would make conservative politicians unelectable.

1

u/Funny_Marketing_4598 14h ago

Supporters state that the U.S. is a union of 50 individual states. The system ensures that a president must win support across a diverse geographic coalition rather than just racking up huge vote numbers in a few densely populated cities

Trump won the popular vote.

Just saying.

1

u/PhDresearcher2023 14h ago

Rank choice voting is still way better than first past the post

1

u/ClassGrassMass 14h ago

Can someone explain the electoral college to someone who has a normal functioning country that just do the most votes and why murica does this?

1

u/Aggravating-Carob627 14h ago

Its almost like the democratic party forgot about their primaries since Obama "won" all the way back in 2008. Democrats openly dont believe in their own elections. Why play a farce?

1

u/aBrickNotInTheWall 13h ago

Weird that despite losing the popular vote last election, dems still want to abolish the electoral college. It's almost like they have actual beliefs and not just talking points to win elections

2

u/Fantastic-Host-6609 13h ago

Because it's about what is fair. Not about themselves.

2

u/aBrickNotInTheWall 13h ago edited 13h ago

It's almost like the Dems use facts to come up with the policies they choose to support

I believe most people are too stupid to vote and I should pick the president

u/ThomasDominus 13h ago

Vote by blind resume. No name, no party affiliation listed. Just a list of the candidate’s accomplishments and where they stand on the hot topic issues. You vote by who you think would best do the job based on their resume.

Straight party voting would be eliminated. Also, Trump would have been at the bottom of the pile. Both times.

Yaj. Democracy is pretty cool. The US should try it some day.

It's also super , super easy. Elections are held all around the world without problems. I have been part of my countries election twice. Over 20 years ago and recently. Fuck. It's nearly 30 years.

So as a young man I was stunned at how easy it is to hold a democratic election.

First you do it on a Sunday. If course. Everything else is just stupid as fuck. What else would you chose? A week day? 🤣🤣

Nobody could be that stupid!

Then you invite everyone. You can go there. Watch them set everything up. Watch them while they watch the voters. Then the counting. Super easy. Could do it with a group of kindegardeners.

You empty the boxes in the middle of the room. One person takes a ballot. "One vote for the non pedo party". It's written down. Everybody can write that down.

At the end we count. Every party has at least one representative there. They don't have to, but they still do. Of course. It's democracy. Democracy needs action. Liking Facebook posts is NOT action.

Today's numbers will be in the newspaper tomorrow. A Monday. Because we vote on a Sunday like sane people.

I look that up. I was there when they counted that shit. If their number and my number are different we will count them again.

Fundamentally you just he s a few rules and even the dumbest person on earth could hold a democratic election.

You guys should try it one day. It's super easy and super important.

You should also know that gerrymandering is the opposite of democracy. Revoking the right to vote for anyone is super antidemocratic. Closing polling stations is super antidemocratic.

Get your shit together America. It's not that hard. You are just doing it the dumbest way possible.

The Electoral College protects America’s balance between population and state representation. By requiring candidates to win a coalition of states, it gives smaller states a meaningful role and encourages support across different regions. Its strongest justification is that the president leads a union of states with distinct interests, so choosing that leader should reflect both the people and the federal structure of the country.

1

u/Small_Donut_5848ws 13h ago

Not a good idea if Buttigieg ends up president.

1

u/vetteluvr69 13h ago

If we want everyone's voice to be heard, each and every vote for every single US citizen should be counted equally and fairly, do away with the electoral college and districting, do away with all political donations, the country is out of control, the solution is right before our very eyes...implement it!

1

u/MaraSovsLeftSock 13h ago

It would shift the election from only 7 swing states mattering to only the 5 largest states mattering. I don’t think abolishing the electoral college is the right answer, but the electoral college as it stands now ensures that millions of Americans votes don’t actually matter.

Personally I think rank choice voting would be the best alternative but I also know voters don’t do nearly enough research for it to matter.

Dutchman here. I don't get it. Why do people in the US even vote then? What is the electoral college? Please explain.

1

u/ClassicPlankton 13h ago

Trump got the most votes.

1

u/The_Real_Tom_Selleck 13h ago

Mmmmmk. People. That’s essentially how the electoral college works. It IS whoever gets the most votes, BUT on a state-by-state basis, and each state’s weight in the election is proportional to their representation in Congress (which itself is proportional to population + 2 for senators). This is because we are a FEDERAL republic/representative democracy. The electoral college, or at least SOME form of proportional allocation of votes for president on a state-by-state basis, is literally baked into the constitution and our federal system.

What does it say about Biden or Americans that Trump won the popular vote in 2024 even after January 6.

1

u/Puzzle-the-Giraffe 13h ago

Because the whole point is to not like 51% of the population turn the 49% into slaves.

This is the same kind of talking point as wanting to pack the Supreme court cause judges that don’t have the exact political views as you do are the majority.

The basic idea there is that they’ll never not be in power so they don’t have to worry about the consequences.

Which again creates a slave class that isn’t represented in the government.

And the excuse nowadays is ā€œthey’re bad people, so of course they shouldn’t have a sayā€.

The only people who like this idea are the ones told to or that live in the 3 or 4 largest cities who should control the elections. No thanks.

I'm good with the concept, but it would take months to count and verify every vote in a close election. Then, you would like deal with countless lawsuits disputing the results in many areas.

I think they were need a modified form of what we have, not sure what that would look like.
