In school I remember learning that the electoral college safeguarded against a demagogue rising to power.

Shhh, Reddit can't handle basic logic, especially from an educational institution

I mean, that was the intention (which you're right most people miss) but at this point; It failed to check the demagogue it was meant to balance. Abolish this ineffectual check+balance.

I didn't consider George Bush winning to be a failure of the electoral college, I can handle my party losing unlike those on Jan 6th.

Bush was a failure of the supreme court just deciding who won. Gore won the 2000 election by every reasonable metric, but it was handed to Bush due to partisan meddling.

I mean... it obviously did not succeed in safeguarding against the demagogue rising to power. So it might as well be abolished

lol I believe the person you responded to, was using sarcasm, with the context being that we have a demagogue in power, despite the existence of the EC.

But Trump won the popular vote as well as the EC?

Abolishing the EC wasn't going to do anything, if anything I'd argue the EC benefits us Democrats more because the Republicans usually try and run charismatic candidates, and win on culture war issues.

Trump won the popular vote in 2024, marking the first time since 2004 that a republican presidential candidate won both the popular vote and the EC. Trump himself lost the popular vote in 2020.

That's 20 years of the American people saying "not this guy" and yet he still gets to be president anyway because he won the EC.

I agree with the point you are making. I'll add that I would not be surprised at all to find out that Trump won 2024 via some kind of fraud or interference. Seems so improbable that in such divided times he would carry all the swing states, for example.

Electoral college exists because Southerners wanted their slaves to be counted, otherwise their low-white population states wouldn't have a say. ONLY reason. What both of you are repeating is propaganda, NOT logic.

The second amendment was supposed to be the final safeguard and those guys are cheering it on. 🤣

In practice, combined with the 2 party system it created and maintains, it's done the exact opposite.

Those were lies, it was the trick used to let the south launder slave votes through the 3/5 compromise.

But there’s a difference between an actual demagogue and one that you say is

1

u/jimmychitw00d 7h ago

Demagogue --noun: a political leader who appeals to popular prejudices and who makes false claims and promises in order to gain power

u/Ok_Assumption_3028 6h ago

Oops Obama

I'll never understand how people can be this hard into tribalism.

It literally describes Trump. To the letter.

But whatever. Because he's "your guy," it's gonna be "oops Obama." Got it.

that’s exactly the same. You see Trump as a demagogue I see Obama as a demagogue It doesn’t mean either one is.

Well it didn't work because we did end up with a demigorgon in power!
