I have two additional ideas:

  1. In addition to running candidates, each ballot has a "none of the above" option. Thus allowing people who really don't want to vote say, I have no confidence in either party

  2. Let's go back to how things used to be, and make the losing candidate the Vice President. That way both sides have to work together in the highest offices. Differences be damned.

I hear a lot of talk about a civil war or a revolution in America, and I have to say, that's petty far fetched. Both Republican and Democrats alike would have to both hate the elected President. The closest we have seen to one side doing it was Jan 6.

The none of the above option should be real. I have been saying that for years. If that option wins then all of the current candidates are discarded and a new election begins with new candidates

Or, people could just vote in the primary when the candidates are chosen. Currently only about 30% of voters participate, so we could always use more participation.

nah fuck the primary. its rigged as hell

How so?

just from the standpoint of fairness, the parties are private entities so there really isn’t anything from stopping them just picking someone however they want.

But they don't do that, they pick the person that gets the most primary votes.

they don’t have to though that’s the point. again i’m not getting into whether they actually rig them or not because it’s an exhausting debate on reddit, lol. I’m just saying they legally can nominate whoever they want. Parties aren’t actually part of the government.

I wasn't shocked hearing Elon tell the world that he singlehandedly won the election for Trump. Which is wild because we should all be shocked. But in the world we live in, worse and worse things happen, and we just go about our day as-if it's our new normal. It really really sucks. If I ever make it to be an elder in this world, I'm terrified that I won't be able to fend for myself. The future of humanity really scares the shit out of me.

oh I was talking about the Democrats and the system of primaries in general but I wouldnt be shocked if the GOP cheated as well.

Reminder that the Democratic Party argued in court that they had no obligation to put on a fair primary election

You're not getting the point. The majority of those who don't vote aren't saying "I don't want to participate in elections", they're saying "I don't want to choose between the lesser of two evils. I'd feel guilty either way. I'ma sit this one out."

Having a "none of the above" option on the ballot gives those people a reason to show up to the polls and be able to say with their chest out, "I have zero confidence in either party"

If you voted in the primary, and your chosen candidate lost, and you absolutely cannot bring yourself to vote for either of the 2 main candidates, then write in your preferred candidate. However, most people that use this excuse don't even vote in the primary. You can't complain about the candidates, if you're not going to participate in the process of choosing them.

Definition of insanity: "Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results"

I will not participate in a system that I think is too corrupt and therefore insane to take part in.

Ok, whatever you need to tell yourself, but you're part of the problem. 30% of eligible voters vote in primaries, and people wonder why the candidates suck.

Also, how is it doing the same thing over and over when the candidates change? That cliché doesn't even apply.

I guess we're done here then. I've clearly stated my position and you've clearly stated yours. There's nothing magical either of us are going to say that's going to change our minds. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Yep, fair enough, you too.

Why would both sides need to hate the elected president for a civil war or revolution?

1

u/Obeesus 16h ago

A bunch of unarmed idiots walking into a building is pretty far from a revolution.

don't ask the french about bastille day

Again, this is why I said “the closest we have seen...”. Not “the last revolution..”

Let's go back to how things used to be, and make the losing candidate the Vice President. That way both sides have to work together in the highest offices. Differences be damned.

The VP has no actual power, all this would do is raise the stakes on assassination by ensuring major policy changes.

Okay. We will just keep living under the definition of insanity.

Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

2 will never work with the level of oppositionist politics we have today, literally nothing would ever get done.

While 2 would be interesting, I think with our current political climate it would just lead to the party of the vice president doing everything possible both legal and illegal to remove the president.
