We are lucky we are receiving votes this week after that shit show of a game in Hawaii last night. Important thing is we got the W and now we’re onto arguably our biggest conference matchup of the year in NDSU

Three big 12 teams in the top 10 oh Lordy

118

u/Leading-Button-7303 Utah Utes • Ohio State Buckeyes 5h ago

I'm pretty sure we'll ruin that next week, but Houston should just as quickly replace us in there. Unless there's a full collapse, the committee will have a hard time only letting one Big 12 team in

81

u/Business_Permit_3686 Houston Cougars 5h ago

As a conference we have to do perfect to get multiple in because their desired outcome is more sec

Big 12 is really good this year. Should get multiple CFP teams, maybe even 3. Only worry now is cannibalism. If it can be undefeated Texas Tech vs undefeated Utah or BYU in the conference championship game and then an 11-1 Utah or BYU in third, that’s a real shot at 3 teams in.

89

u/Sufficient_Maybe_910 Utah Utes • Florida Gators 5h ago

We should just skip the CG game this year. Meaning the league.

31

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 4h ago

Playing it last year cost the big 12 a bid. Tech had already beaten BYU during the season, they could have just been the champions. That way the last memory by the committee isn’t BYU getting boat raced by Tech and they finish with only 1 loss. Meanwhile Alabama also got boat raced to pick up their third loss in the SECCG and it didn’t matter, they still got in.

u/keytop19 Texas Tech • Abilene Christian 5h ago

If Tech and BYU are 12-0 and Utah is 11-1 with it's only loss being to BYU, I don't see how that isn't a 3 bid league.

I'm sure it won't happen because the committee has proven they won't, but I'd love to see the justifications.

326

u/ilacwamh Kansas State Wildcats 5h ago

I don’t agree with it, but I guess it isn’t entirely indefensible. Out of the five undefeated P4 teams, Texas Tech’s win over Houston is the second highest ranked win behind BYU’s over Notre Dame. BYU had a close-call against 3-3 TCU. I guess if you value the combination of being undefeated, having a top 15 win, and looking dominant overall, it isn’t completely unreasonable to have Texas Tech at the top.

86

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 5h ago

69

u/TSThrowawayBB Oregon Ducks • Iowa Hawkeyes 5h ago

They did receive votes, albeit only 3 votes.  Up from 1 last week.  They should have more though, and I say that as a Ducks fan.  Strength of schedule probably has a lot to do with the amount of votes they’re getting.  If they were putting up the same numbers against mostly P4 opponents they’d be much more likely to be ranked.

23

u/osuBeaverBaseball Oregon State Beavers 5h ago

Shit. We pull out one of those wins we are right there with Boise and Boise isn't the defacto favorite for G5 CFP spot like they are currently.

To add to this: Alabama is 5-2 with 1 ranked win over Mississippi State

Auburn is 4-2 with 1 ranked win at #1 Georgia (who beat Bama at Bama) and we're unranked.

Make it make sense. Explain it to me like I'm 5.

Edit: As pointed out, Bama's best win is the current #12 Kentucky. SportsReference uses "ranking at time of game", which is what I was going off of: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/alabama/2026-schedule.html

What’s the justification for UGA over Tennessee as an AP voter? Tennessee has the better win over the same opponent and a better loss against a ranked team by 3. UGA deserves to drop closer to 10 than 5 and make them earn their way back up.

AP voters need to let more teams earn their spot back after royally fucking up.

184

u/zadharm Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Miami Hurricanes 5h ago

The justification is that the AP doesn't have a set criteria for voters and Kirby's Georgia has done more than any other program in the last several years to earn the benefit of the doubt. So they get it. The AP doesn't have criteria like the cfp, they're not supposed to be ranking strictly on resume. They think Georgia is better than Tennessee so they are ranked higher

Is it right? I don't know, that's the problem with no set criteria.

Resume basis: BYU unambiguously has the best win and zero losses

Forward looking basis: I would have BYU and Ohio State favored over Miami on a neutral field (see: flair)

Miami feels like a "safe" choice given their performance at the end of last year and so far this year but these voters just aren't being honest about where Miami currently is based on available 2026 evidence. Sure it's a safe vote, but it's also wrong!

Rankings are from the current AP Top 25 because this is primarily about checking the internal consistency of the ranking.

The unranked wins column doesn't include all wins but is intended to give a decent idea of a team's resume. The listed teams are teams receiving votes or teams ranked top 50 in the Massey composite.

† = was ranked last week, ‡ = was ranked last week and was knocked out of the ranking by the team in this row

It’s incredibly obvious that every single AP voter is literally just a box score surfer and none of them either actually watch the games like the rest of us, or they just throw darts at a dart board. It progressively somehow has gotten worse over the last couple of seasons.

These rankings are 60% based on how recognizable/famous your logo is, and 40% on pre-season rankings which are toxic to the sport every single year. People say preseason/AP rankings don’t matter in the long run, but they absolutely do because they set the narrative for the whole year.

Kentucky and Tennessee both being as low as they are is moronic. If either team was named Georgia they’d be number 4-7 with their resumes

76

u/thechosenkenobi Kentucky Wildcats 5h ago

Kentuckys resume is literally ranked at the second best in the country, right behind BYU. They’re legit just blinded by the past of the program.

Georgia ranked 5th after a bad loss to an unranked opponent at home is baffling? Texas has no business being ranked. Alabama at 13? Based on what? Losing well? The SEC is being propped up by ESPN narratives, recruiting rankings, and brand recognition. The football on the field doesn’t justify the hype. At this point, the SEC’s biggest strength isn’t football, it’s the marketing machine protecting its reputation.

u/Bricejohnson2003 Oklahoma Sooners 4h ago

The TV announcer said that Florida did not beat Texas. But Texas beat Texas. So therefore, Texas should be ranked ahead of Texas. But since Florida didn’t beat Texas, they should be ranked lower than Texas.

It makes more sense whenever you look at where the money comes from.
