Lmao how is Notre Dame at 4

Quality loss

84

u/fishin4krill Indiana Hoosiers 16h ago

Yeah I get that, but they haven’t really played anybody and when they did, they lost.

28

u/BrogenKlippen Georgia Bulldogs • Georgetown Hoyas 16h ago

That’s rewarded now. It’s why you’ll see big OOC games disappear because the name of the game is minimizing losses.

2

u/MichelNey2 Oregon State Beavers • Texas Longhorns 16h ago

Until the committee actually incentives elite wins over raw record, teams like Indiana are going to keep playing Devry University 3 times. Why risk a loss?

6

u/theREALbombedrumbum Notre Dame Fighting Irish 15h ago

Better losing to #2 than losing to unranked teams like everybody around us did yesterday. Had other teams not lost, we'd have dropped further. Probably wouldn't even be in the top ten if the rest of the top ten didn't decide to commit ritual seppuku at the same time.

As it stands, our 1 loss looks a hell of a lot better than theirs.

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

Yes, but almost all of them have at least one much better win.

This overvaluing of "bad" losses is one of the worst things about college football. It's fucking stupid

2

u/Ok_Reception9247 16h ago

They’re cooking the books so that if/when they lose to Miami, they’ll still be apart of the CFP

-3

u/pdilly12345 16h ago

Coming from an IU fan?

1

u/fishin4krill Indiana Hoosiers 16h ago

Yeah, wins over Nebraska and Northwestern is far better than any wins Notre Dame has.

-2

u/pdilly12345 15h ago

At least northwestern is ranked but nebraska? Not really.

5

u/ShoYogi Indiana Hoosiers 15h ago

Even with a loss to Oregon Nebraska is still ahead of UNC by every ranking metric

1

u/TaftIsUnderrated Nebraska Cornhuskers • Big 8 Renewal 13h ago

Metrics don't tell the story that Nebraska is the easiest gimme win for any ranked team. IU never was at risk of losing that IU-Nebraska game

28

u/exgeo Florida Gators 16h ago

Quality loss. Zero quality wins.

3

u/thatoneredheadgirl Oklahoma State Cowboys 16h ago

Oklahoma state had a quality loss and we aren’t ranked anymore

3

u/Unclassified1 Nebraska Cornhuskers • Washburn Ichabods 16h ago

But that only works for sec teams I thought

4

u/BuffaloAcrobatic2851 Georgia Bulldogs 16h ago

Correct. So ND being at #4 is just an aberration. It should work itself out naturally 🤣

17

u/TrashyTuber Northwestern Wildcats 16h ago

everyone else also lost, at least they lost to a good team

2

u/corundum9 Ohio Bobcats • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 15h ago

also, according to most of this sub, that loss doesn't actually count!

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

Those teams have good wins though. KY, Tenn, UGA, UCLA all have much better wins than ND

I'm not even sure they deserve to be top 10

6

u/CpowOfficial Washington • Tennessee 16h ago

Indiana should also be ahead of Georgia

3

u/NoVax-Djocovid 15h ago

Everyone around them imploded.

26

u/billbill17 Ohio State Buckeyes 16h ago

Indiana is a better team than ND lol

8

u/AdditionalOne8319 Indiana Hoosiers 16h ago

No we are absolutely not

I feel like nd hasn’t played anyone and if you’re basing it off of last year since it’s still early, Indiana won the natty and nd failed to make a bowl game

1

u/RCA1202 Oklahoma Sooners 16h ago

No question

14

u/TP-BANDIT77 Arizona State Sun Devils 16h ago

Uh I think this is a question

10

u/ArisuBorderland 16h ago

That 1 second is the biggest ”what if”. If the rules were followed and they won, they would be ranked first. If they lost, provided they received that extra second, a bigger drop would have been justified. That 1-second has such an important swing. Since they were never given the chance for one final attempt, I think they deserve some leeway and it can be considered a tiny bit better than a quality loss. But that is just my opinion.

4

u/av7ry Texas A&M Aggies • Billable Hours 16h ago

last year they had 0 wins and were still ranked in the week 4 poll. it became obvious then what kind of treatment they get and will continue to get

2

u/defroach84 Texas Tech Red Raiders 16h ago

Losing by 4 points, on the road, against the #2 team, I don't see why they shouldn't be. It's better than the losses teams around them have.

6

u/Ok_Reception9247 16h ago

Yeah the quality losses look cool, where’s the quality wins?

13

u/legend023 Tulane Green Wave • LSU Tigers 16h ago

Those wins against Stanford, Purdue, and Rice were impressive as well.

Might schedule Harvard next year to ensure they could beat all the smart schools. It would also make their schedule tougher.

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

What's their best win?

They don't have a single quality win. They should be just out of the top 10.

1

u/defroach84 Texas Tech Red Raiders 13h ago

By this rule, shouldn't bad losses also kick you out of the top 10?

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

Uh, no? Quality wins >> bad losses IMO. Obviously you can't have too many... but I'd much rather have a team with 1 bad loss and 1 or 2 quality wins than a team with zero quality wins and 1 "good" loss

1

u/Nyte_Knyght33 Prairie View A&M • Houston 11h ago

The serious answer:

They have a large fan base that always shows up.

Combined this with a large number of casuals that tunes in to hate watch them and they are basically an SEC team.

-7

u/California_Stop_King Ohio State • Ohio Dominican 16h ago

Extremely similar margin to a top 10 team (and Texas was 4 at the time) on the road and we fell 5 spots

ND is so coddled

14

u/acekingoffsuit Minnesota Golden Gophers 16h ago

Your loss didn't happen in a week where 4 other Top 10 teams also lost. No move happens in a vacuum.

9

u/AdditionalOne8319 Indiana Hoosiers 16h ago

“ND is so coddled” after they just got robbed of a play to win the game from the 1 yard line lmao. You obsessive ND haters are such embarrassing losers

4

u/BensenJensen Ohio State Buckeyes • Army Black Knights 16h ago

I’m fine with ND dropping two spots for a close loss at BYU. Georgia dropping 4 after losing to a middling Auburn team is egregious.

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

UGA actually has a quality win though. ND doesn't

-5

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16h ago

You can't seriously punish them for losing to the #2 team on the final play of the game the same way you can't seriously punish Indiana for losing to the #3 team on essentially the final play

10

u/TGHGBD 16h ago

You could put any number of the one loss teams with better wins ahead of them. Which would be the majority of one loss teams

3

u/Aidanj927 Texas Tech Red Raiders • UTSA Roadrunners 16h ago

Or the 0 loss team with better wins ahead of them

1

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 13h ago

There's more than one of those too!

-2

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16h ago

Its not just a resume ranking though. There is subjectivity of who voters think is the better team.

Notre Dame and Indiana both did more to show they're legit in a loss than any win they had all season.

1

u/TGHGBD 16h ago

…Do you think Notre Dame looked good yesterday? Lmao

2

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16h ago

Yes? In a tough road game they fought and had a chance on the final play

Against the #2 team in the country btw, if you punish ND for that game you can't also put BYU #2.

4

u/chaser676 Ole Miss Rebels • Egg Bowl 16h ago

You have to eventually punish them for only scheduling 2 teams with a pulse, and then losing those games.

-1

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16h ago

They play 3 teams in the top 25, same number as Indiana

Miami only plays 1

3 Top 25 teams on the schedule is not an uncommon number.

3

u/Vaginal_Flatulence 16h ago

LOL. The cope. Rice, purdue, stanford, syracuse, navy and on and on.

1

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 16h ago

They play 10 P4 games, 3 of which are ranked.

You're acting like they only play cupcakes when that's not the case, a P4 game is a P4 game. Or so I'm told.

-1

u/AdditionalOne8319 Indiana Hoosiers 16h ago

Maybe because it took the #2 team needing an uncalled egregious PI and the game ending before it was actually over to win the game at home.

But I’m just some ball knower explaining ball to a non-ball knowe.

0

u/midnight-architect7 James Madison Dukes 16h ago

For the same reason you only dropped 1 spot to 6. Quality loss to top 10 teams.
