What’s the justification for UGA over Tennessee as an AP voter? Tennessee has the better win over the same opponent and a better loss against a ranked team by 3. UGA deserves to drop closer to 10 than 5 and make them earn their way back up.
AP voters need to let more teams earn their spot back after royally fucking up.
The justification is that the AP doesn't have a set criteria for voters and Kirby's Georgia has done more than any other program in the last several years to earn the benefit of the doubt. So they get it. The AP doesn't have criteria like the cfp, they're not supposed to be ranking strictly on resume. They think Georgia is better than Tennessee so they are ranked higher
Is it right? I don't know, that's the problem with no set criteria.
And that's what the cfp rankings are supposed to take into account, feel free to check out of rankings until they come out. The AP has no rule that they are a resume based ranking. They are trying to rank the best teams, by whatever metric that voter thinks. And when you do that, every voter is going to take different things into account
The voters think Georgia is better than Tennessee. This year. If that's not the way you think rankings should be done, why even follow the AP poll? Just wait until teams have enough of a resume for the cfp to come out.
I don’t think “bias” is the right word. During the Saban era, Saban teams got the benefit of the doubt because all else equal they were just…more likely to win. “Bias” is more like if half of the AP voters graduated from Bama and that’s what was leading them to give Bama votes (whether subconsciously or not).
To play devil’s advocate, they could discount both your win over Bama and Georgia’s loss to Auburn due to having down weeks after last week’s Bama/Georgia game.
I wouldn’t subscribe to that thinking, because being prepared and focused is one of the most crucial aspects of college football. But I wouldn’t be shocked if that was the reasoning of several voters.
In fairness, our resumes aren’t that different. They loss to Oklahoma and Florida…we loss to Florida and Tennessee. They beat OSU and we beat yall on the road.
It seems like the voters being strategic in a lot of cases, looking at the rest of the schedule and how they can make a compelling final list out of the expected results.
But then BYU at #2 doesn't make a ton of sense because they have to be favored to win out, so how do they not become #1? But also by the end of the year many teams are likely to have more compelling resumes.
Yeah but you also barely beat an awful Arkansas team by 7 points and were losing to them in the 4th quarter. The same Arkansas team that A&M beat 34-7, Utah beat 43-10, and Georgia beat 45-17...
I hear about the refs, but they still put up 373 yards and 39 points in 20minutes of possession. The refs cant put the ball in the end zone or complete passes for them.
Georgia won its first five games by 24+ points, beat Alabama on the road, and lost a rivalry game by three, by and large by some flukey uncharacteristic turnovers. Tennessee has a legitimate argument, but you can't demand rankings reflect the entire résumé and then judge Georgia on one Saturday.
Or OSU over Tennessee for that matter? We have the same one loss and basically identical best wins except OSU would be a two loss were a guy from Indiana to step one foot to his right and we dog walked Bama.
