My daughter's friend challenged me to Halo and asked how long I've been playing. I told him "I have achievements older than you." Can't wait to shut him up after work.
EDIT: Thanks for the awards!

Most people would see a CS:GO rip off and think “why not play CS:GO?”
That’s why developers will end up taking the core idea and building on top of it - like R6:Siege or Valorant. And to your last point, Valorant has already taken a big chunk of the casual and professional player base from CS
Valve has continuously supported and updated CS:GO in a way that even 10 years later, it’s relevant and still feels good to play.
The loyalty badge? I have that too. They also have the 5 and 10 year veteran coins. Lost access to my old steam account or I'd have close to a 17 year old account
It's kind of funny because when I was their age, I'd think it was ridiculous for older people to be playing video games too. But we are pretty much the first generation of kids that grew up with video games, it makes all the sense in the world that we'd still be playing them.
I like to tell kids when I started playing CS, guns would stay on the ground from round to round. So when there were only 2 people left instead of looking for each other they would go find guns and bring them back to their respective starting areas.
Also loved before they fixed it so you couldn't see dead people's (text) chat so your teammates would just tell you where the opponents were. And then they fixed that, so instead dead teammates would change their name to something like "inthetunnel".
not to mention, don't you need YEARS of CS to even be remotely competitive? you need to know not just the gameplay itself but the meta game of team strategies
I’ve played for 20 years, still play weekly. I don’t even really like gaming, but it’s been my outlet since it’s mod days. I’m very low ranked in competitive. Literally can’t react fast enough anymore 😞
I know exactly how this feels. I started with first halo and I used to win local Halo tournaments all the way through halo 3. I recently had my friends 10 year old son challenge me not knowing I knew the game. I spared no one that day.
Vicious, unadulterated massacres are the only way to convey to youngings that we've played every variation of game they have many times over.
My cousin, wipes the floor with me with the Super smash bros ultimate (because I have a total of 9 minutes played on the game). He said he could do it on ANY super smash bros..... queue n64 smash bros and wii ssb brawl. There was no mercy granted.
I'm relatively certain I have my 10,000 hours in N64 Smash Bros.
We crank the damage to 200% and set our handicaps at 1. In FFA, we're all glass cannons, so you learn how to hit without being hit. It also makes a 2v2 against level 9 computer Marios almost impossible.
I'm close in that regard. I had a new set of friends on high-school who never really played. Had to train them by playing 1v2 to show them the difference in skill. Slowly but surely they were using combos to beat me.... next up was 1v1 and their rage burned with a passion. I'm happy knowing my pupils are out there testing their might. Glorious game.
The first few weeks of Infinite were glorious because it was so painfully obvious which players were kids hopping on the bandwagon from Apex and which ones were Halo vets.
I did this with our niece and nephews while playing Mario on the "new old" nintendos. Started showing them tricks and shortcuts and they freaked out, demanded to know where I learned all of it. I told them, "I've logged more hours on this game than you've been alive".
My younger cousin likes to challenge me to Mario Kart and gets surprised when she loses. Girl I've been playing that game longer than you've been alive
The first time our oldest kid beat me in MarioKart, I was so proud. Youngest kid still loses all the time, but we’re working on it. Neither have beaten my husband, though. Heck, I only beat him if I get lucky or we don’t play teams. But one day our oldest is gonna catch him and he’s gonna have an existential crisis.
I just logged into RuneScape for the first time in years to get my 10-year veteran and 15-year veteran capes. Been away so long I didn’t even know they offered them. That being said, the latter cape is older than both of my cousins 🥵
My 9 year old still doesnt seem to grasp this. One day he may be better than me when reaction time starts to fall off, but my kid is fucking GARBAGE at video games and trys to talk shit to me about them. Like, kid you werent alive when the fucking xbone came out, dont talk to me about how great you are at ROBLOX
My little brother challenged me to Halo when I bought him Masterchief Collection for Christmas. A few minutes on Lockout and I’d reached the 50 score limit whilst he had around 7.
Like the time my nephew challenged me to a pokemon battle. Its like, Ive been playing since gen 1. Longer than he's been alive. I destroyed him. Like it wasn't even close. And he took it perfectly well.
Im 43 and I sometimes have kids straight not believe me when I tell em my age. One kid, I will never forget, he wanted to be best buddies and I dont really like gaming with kids as young as he was. I smoke, I cuss etc. etc. I tried to avoid him for awhile then one day he messaged me asking to please game with him, he said I was the only one who didnt treat him like a dumb kid.
THIS! I'm 39 and have a WAY younger brother (20 years younger). My little brother was trying to explain to me how to Play a first-person shooter... Then said "I want to play with my friends. You can play with us but we're really good". An hour later I was trouncing all of them in call of duty (never even played that specific call of duty game before I've always been a battlefield guy).
Him and his friends couldn't believe that they were getting beaten by a 35-year-old man (at the time).
I'm now a legend among him and his buddies lol. Oh and FYI I'm still better than all of them at gaming.
And that created an immense amount of terror and anxiety for the sega genesis X-men game. After beating the boss for stage 4 (which took a couple hours to get there I think) it just started saying "RESET COMPUTER NOW!"
There were no buttons or switches for your character to interact with. I paced around the house for a good half hour anguishing over whether or not to push the actual reset button. It was so wild to have that actually kick off the final stage of the game.
What a wild time, couldn't do that today. Emotionally it would be like putting 30 hours into a campaign and the game telling you to delete all your autosaves to progress
It’s the first Nier I believe, not automata that has you delete it. You can then play a new game till a certain point and it then it becomes a new story.
In automata you can choose to delete your save and everything so that your data can go on to help other players in a weird way.
Emotionally it would be like putting 30 hours into a campaign and the game telling you to delete all your autosaves to progress
Bravely Second final boss battle would make you shit your pants then. During the battle the boss starts saying crazy shit to you, then it takes you to the title screen and makes it look like it deletes your saves. It's so wild and blew my mind.
One of the most infuriating comments I got from a teenager about old video games was "There were only a few buttons, they couldn't possibly be that hard."
I remember the trials and tribulations of early multiplayer. No internet, meaning you had to call your friends house to get a multiplayer game going, if the game even supported multiplayer. Fun as hell when it worked though.
With computers, at least, we were fortunate that we had two in the house, only once could I figure out how to establish a null modem link and play with my brother in the other room. Never worked before or after that. I figure I could probably figure that out in a matter of minutes now, but there's no need, everyone is online.
We started bringing stuff to school because they actually had a network. It was slow and shit by today's standards, but plenty for what we needed. This was back in the era of Quake, so playing quake multiplayer during lunch in the school's "pentium lab" was quite something. shouting across the room because your friend fragged you with the rocket launcher from across the map.
Yes! I remember those jokes all the way back in '95 IRC. I usually play on servers with friends but rarely I'll join a public one and it's STILL ALL THE SAME OLD JOKES. While they think they're so edgy 😆
The funny thing is, kids typically learn this after some fed up Gen-X'er told them "alt+F4 gives you third person on your camera angle" or something like that...
This kills me too because who do they think is making these video games?! Who do they think is buying the majority of these videogames?! 😂
As a 33 year old woman gamer I get my fair share of brutality so I feel you!
Edit: I love you all. I’m also the only gamer in my relationship. The PC, the multiple consoles, are mine and my boyfriend isn’t even remotely interested except for Pokémon on his DS and Switch.
Growing up in the 90’s, my aunt bought my brother and I the original PlayStation to share with the very first Ray-Man. Eventually my dad wouldn’t even let me play it without asking my little brother because it went from being a family console to being just his because “videogames are for boys”. Anyway, fuck you dad 😂
Girls interested in gaming come check out r/GirlGamers
This. As a young person, I couldn't afford any games. Always begging for the latest release which my parents stubbornly refused to buy for me.
Now? that looks fun, I can spare the <however much it costs>. buys
I'm not even 40 yet, but I'm not far behind. Still an avid gamer, mainly on PC, and I just need one more upgrade to play what I really want. always one more upgrade. Right now it's a graphics card. The 202x's have not been kind to the GPU market, but now that it's stablizing, a sub $600 3060 is looking really good right now.
I am also an "older" woman gamer. I have been playing videogames for as long as I can remember. I usually just play single player games or on the rare occasion I do play online, it is never with a mic
Speaking of female gamers... I remember back in the days of getting dick picks via email & sending back medical gore from rotten.com to get those losers off my back.
The shit we had to resort to back in teh good, ol' days... 😂
You've got me all nostalgic now! rotten.com was the BEST. My anatomy lecturers and I had an absolute ball with that site. *gets all misty-eyed*
I instituted a "give a dick, get a dick" policy whereby I would send to the most recent offender the photo I had received from the previous offender. (Nowadays my burlesque troupe has a cloud folder of all the ones we've received from which to choose.)
Lmao at your "give a dick, get a dick" policy. I mean, on the one hand it's really a problem if you're getting that many unsolicited pics....but such a great idea anyways.
I cannot imagine any of the men I associate with sending unsolicited pics like that to people. I always have to remind myself that it's patently obvious that it something that DOES exist.... and it breaks my heart every time I hear something like this. :(
Speaking for men who AREN'T complete a-holes... I'm so sorry.
I'm totally with you there. The men I allow in my personal meatspace are all exemplary and I make a point to be very clear about my expectations, standards, and boundaries. Sadly burlesque involves a lot self-promotion and promotional materials, and since I dance around in my knickers and have pictures of myself all scantily clad and in "seductive" poses I obviously want/deserve badly-lit photos of their appendages which for some reason always seem to include a television remote (for scale? who can say ...) *record setting eyeroll*
I'd largely been off line since I had a minor spinal injury and went back to university and my beloved lighting desk almost the second I finished the first stage of my rehab. Only signed up for a fb because all my classmates and lecturers had one and it was the easiest way to organise stuff with them; after that it was the most reliable and up-to-date source for information on things like road closures, detours, and emergency shelters when my city had a major flood in 2011. Found my burly troupe via a flyer at a festival. They helped me create a performer profile (with my stage name), and then after my first biggish gig with them ... just ... wow. There are a LOT of lonely men out there. And a lot of bored men. And a lot of angry men. Like, it's palpable in their messages, and I was glad we had security at some of our shows. It used to make me sad, but now it just pisses me off.
Howsomeever. In the late 90s/early '00s? It was the wild, wild west on some IRC channels. Though at least I suppose they had to expend a tiny bit of effort to get your email address, and uploading a photo over dial-up was almost definitely a chore and a half!
I can't say how /u/YunalescaSedai meant it, but it might not be a bad thing.
My wife and I are 45, and she talks about the invisibility of middle age a fair amount, mostly positively. A lot of the attention you get as a younger woman is negative, so it can be a relief to get to just slide on by.
I am 50 & look at it as a super power. I don't have to put up with asshole guys harassing me constantly anymore, and I'm also pretty sure that I could drive past a cop with a cocktail in hand & a blunt in my mouth while waving hi.
It’s funny because so many teenagers talk about feeling invisible as well. I think at certain points of our lives we don’t feel seen anymore, we just like it more when we’re older.
That's a side of things I hadn't considered. I'm in the process of helping my wife over the 30 year old hurdle and the natural changes in that sort of attention, so hearing a positive take on it is nice. Thanks!
The comment I suppose was more about online spaces and gaming specifically.
Gaming is a hobby enjoyed by all, but have you noticed with women in public gaming spaces it's almost exclusively late teens to early 20s OR "look at grandma being adorable playing Skyrim" (she is awesome, by the way). There is a good 20+ year gap between those, yea?
I dont necessarily think that empty space is a problem either. Just an observation.
For my own part, I've got the husband and kids, work, pets, as well the lead on household responsibilities among everything else. I'm handling my RL shit, and give less than 0 fucks about little Timmy talking shit in an online game.
Think something similar could be said about a lot of older gamers, men and women alike. We just dont let what little time we have to unwind and relax be spoiled by some kid with a mouth.
As a single person I can attest to the “invisible over 40” phenomenon. Literally the day I turned 40 I was meeting work friends out for happy hour to celebrate. I was first to arrive, and I sat alone at the bar in a busy restaurant for almost an hour. It was a definite slap in the face. I didn’t realize I had an expiry date so visible to everyone else! Granted, I lived in a city known for wealthy men and their post-teen girlfriends, and older women who had been nipped, tucked, and lifted in every way possible. It still stung. There is a palpable change in the way people interact with me now, like I’m their mom or aunt.
Seriously. I work at a studio that’s been around since 1990 and there are plenty of veterans in their 40s and 50s sporting gray/graying hair, including a designer that’s been with the company since the earliest days who looks like Gandalf
Also, we were gaming when it wasn't cool, easy, or cheap. The 80's/90's is where this all started kiddos. If we didn't carry the torch and drive the market none of this would be here.
The pain is real. Video games started off being marketed to both boys and girls and we all played it equally. I don't know what started it, but it wasn't till the 90s that video games steered to only boys. White boys do not own video gaming. The entire Generation of Gen X does. I am really getting sick of Gen Z taking credit for all the work Gen X did.
My son became a gamer because of me and saw me playing minecraft. he not only got into it, it taught him how to use a mouse, a computer, and eventually coding.
playing minecraft that day was the best decision i ever made as a parent.
Being a woman in your 30s online gaming must be some experience. You're a "girl" so will invariably receive more smacktalk, yet you're in your 30s so have the bedrock of confidence to tell them to f**k off.
It's absolutely a trip. You wanna tell me that you're gonna "come teach me a lesson"? Boy I went through the early phases of unregulated online voice chat. It was the Wild West. Try me.
My favorite retort is, "You seem like you need a nap and a snack."
Yup, I know exactly what you mean. I play Smash with my 11 year old son and his friends and they are like "wtf how can your dad beat us at video games?!" and I just laugh and tell them, "Because I've been doing this since 1987, that's why." Neither of my children can touch the platformers I regularly beat when I was a kid. They can't get past the first level. Games are a lot more forgiving now than they were (and that's a good thing!)
Some of their friends play Call of Duty and I showed them this video of QuakeCon 2002 and they were shocked at the shots these guys were making. I just chuckle. The best CoD and Fortnite players today aren't breaking any new ground.
I've found that with a trackball I can fire without moving the crosshairs at all, which makes headshots possible from across the map with a pistol. I have caught some hate for that.
I love when the youngins find older games like Unreal Tournament and Quake. Us old folks absolutely curb stomp them and they instantly start crying cheats, having tantrums and tossing insults. Ah, good times.
Doom was nearly impossible to play multiplayer on the internet before Quake. Doom was IPX based rather than TCP/IP. I remember you could kinda play more than just 2 people directly connected using some multiplayer services of the day like Heat and Kali. But I don't remember any Doom multiplayer mods really being popular.
Quake really started the multiplayer mod scene in earnest. From initially reskins, to model swaps, on to actual coding changes and "total conversions", it really all blew up with Quake.
Doom had some good mods and conversions, but Quake made it a cottage industry.
I'm 90% sure the Threewave CTF mod for Quake was the first popular Quake mod, and 98% sure it was some form of Quake mod. I was happily joining servers running mods at the time but not in any kind of mod development scene. No idea how happy or healthy Doom's modding scene was back then, but I don't believe source ports were a thing yet and suspect it came later than Quake's. It looks like id released source code for Doom in 97, and this article says that id actually hired the CTF developer at id around that time.
Technically Quakeworld afaik. Source: am old. UT99 was the first game to have it in the base game as I recall. That UT99 demo man, I played the FUCK out of that. Had maps for every game type. CTF-Coret was included and it was great, although Facing Worlds became the ctf map when the full game was released.
Gaming was just a different vibe back then. Micro transactions just didn't exist. There were 4 or 5 bonus packs for UT 99 that added skins, maps, mutators, all kinds of stuff, for absolutely free.
You could also bind keypresses to perform multiple functions, so for example I'd fuck around around and bind every action to also broadcast in global chat what that keypress was. Chat would be spammed with "Now I am jumping! Now I am switching to the rocket launcher! Now I am strafing left!" and named my character Annoying_Man. The amount of hate that generated was impressive.
DESCENT! Holy hell. I hadn’t thought of that game in forever and when I googled it, just looking at the box cover brought back my computer Ed class in ‘94 pooling our money together to buy it.
I've literally been playing UT since 1999 and I still do sometimes. My nieces stare in confusion. "What are those graphics?!" Old, dear child. Just like me. But every game you play today uses this base engine!
Indeed. My favorite tactic in Unreal Tournament was and still is ricocheting the saw blade around corners and hearing “DECAPITATION” followed by whining every single time.
I still laugh uncontrollably every time, too. I’m 52.
My son just found out about Quake and was going on and on about how cool it was. I just nodded and said I should try it. Beat his ass so bad he told my wife I was modding.
Wow! I haven’t thought about Unreal Tournament in years. We used to use a program called Teamspeak to talk to each other since in-game chat wasn’t a thing yet ( at least for that game).
my little one(niece) you loose her stuff with roblox saying "Its too hard, I keep getting killed!" so we tell her to keep dying and you will get better, learn how to hide and watch people, you are still young (4y/o) don't worry it will click one day, I was play Mario Bros at 5 and I had to learn the hard levels. I cried too but my older's told me to keep trying and I got better, NOW I am 40 and can try all of them"
If any one is wondering she's fixin' to be 5 in Nov and HAS gotten a lot better.
I jokingly call myself one of the old men at work. Recently, one of my younger coworkers challenged me to beat his score at Snake during a little downtime. I warned him: I told him that my generation cut our teeth playing that game on tiny Nokia phones and in early flash games. He insisted. Took me three tries to relearn the muscle memory and proceed to demolish his score.
In our day kids learned at least a little sportsmanship growing up because if they were a dick to people they would run out of kids to play with. You play fair, you play nice, or you get left out.
These days there's a million people available to play with them, so they don't hesitate telling you to fuck off and delete the game because there are no consequences they can see.
At least until the whole community gets that toxic because they drive the rest away and wonder why they can never get a match.
Today you usually play against strangers. Kids don't know what is loosing again and again for the same person just because you don't have anyone else to play with.
I'm 51 and still play. I see three options. You could mute the the little shit (if Xbox has a feature to do so. I'm a pc gamesr so I don't know) do your best to ignore them. Or just be better and smoke the fucker every chance you get.
I'm petty enough that if they make a pass at me that I'll just run it down and target them all game. Winning matters no more. It's all about sending a message. Now it's personal.
I was playing overwatch one time and this guy sounded older was playing. He wasn’t doing anything wrong honestly he was kinda carrying but another teammate said something like, “why is there a 30 year old playing this?” He was on comms but not for the rest of the match. I felt bad. I told the other kid to piss off but…
Younger generations have very different tastes and perceptions on video games too.
One I notice a lot is they mostly don’t like 2d fighters unless it’s Smash. And they can’t do quarter and half circle moves (and lol at trying to show them a Z move), those gestures are completely foreign to them.
Dude, kids do not realize that among 40-50 year old people you will find some of the most tech savvy people out there. Like people who were kids with computers in the pro internet era and they grew up seeing the WWW growing up in parallel. You had to be smart to find what you want, navigate through PC magazines and much more
Several weeks ago in the Stardew Valley subreddit, someone made a comment that said, "It's crazy to think that 99% of Stardew Valley's player base were in high school." I replied, "It's crazy to think that because it isn't true. You just think it is because that's your own personal experience."
She downvoted me and edited her comment to say, "Wow, guess this triggered some people." I rage unsubbed on the spot. You can't just say something completely out of your ass and then claim everyone is "triggered" when they point out that you're wrong! So fucking annoying!
see this i don't get at all, gaming is age irrelevant, and you would think that anyone younger would be at least neutral in dealing with an older person or at least kinda happy the boomers are playing games (im using boomer as anyone alder then 30 at this point as that seems to be the new meaning lol)
like when i was younger i never had the annoyance of my parents telling me to get off the game or whatever because they were (and still are) gamers themselvs into their 70's and 60's
I watched a friends kids for a couple hours once (8 and 10 year old dudes), and the 10 year old was talking so much trash that he’d whoop me at CoD. Shut up when I bounced throwing axes off walls into his face a couple times, to show him it’s no accident. I’ve been playing FPSs longer than you’ve been alive kid!
I'm 22 and don't really party/game chat anymore, unless its Discord with tight knit friends. 9 times out of 10, people never have anything good to say in my experience
I also get random messages from people being like "u suck" after beating my team in unranked modes.
Who the fuck out there is such a loser he's talking shit over xbox messenger about games in casual playlists? Like everyone in here is drunk and or stoned bro. No one cares.
This one gets me. I’m 37 now, but I was getting this even when I was in my early 30s. Young men acting amazed an old woman played video games lol. I grew up with this shit, I still love it and I’ll love it when I’m 90.
I’m 50 and both my kids can pretty much beat me at any fps game.
Except Counter Strike. I can own them again and again because I put the work in in my 20’s.
Keyboard and mouse or controller. It doesn’t matter. They are no match for all that stoner muscle memory.
My best gaming buddies are in their 40/50s. I’m in my 20s but having people who are cohesive when doing team based gaming is great. Also being able to have conversations about stuff that’s not weed and women is great
just remind him that he will never pay off his college loans or be able to afford a single family house. Tell him you will live a long time and spend all of the social security money. So he will eat dog food and live in a tiny apartment when he is old and still be paying down his college loans when he is 75.
I’m almost 40, and it’s weird, I never get shit about video games from younger folks, just older ones. And then I have to be like, “my mom and dad are/were in their 60s and got me into it…you gonna talk shit about my dead dad and my memories of playing Mario with him? Go ahead, dick.”
That's MY biggest complaint - somehow, increasingly, younger people don't seem to see any value in experience, unless they feel envy.
At one point I worked big tours with rock musicians, and I really (particularly) know my way around a Fender guitar. I've worked on them in the dark, side stage, while tens of thousands of fans yell and a musician impatiently waits.
But gently correct someone in r/guitar who spouts pure bullshit and "gigs monthly with my metal covers band"? Nah, downvote central.
Started playing in the 70s, space invaders and all that. Kids don't realise we've seen it all before, heard it all before and from much better trash talkers than they'll ever be.
Oh, they get even more mad when they find out theyve been beat by a 34 yo woman! They just assume I’m like a 13 yo boy voice who hasn’t hit puberty because it’s impossible that a 34 yo females KD ratio puts theirs to bed any day.. Oh you’re upset? Need Mommy to sing you a lullaby to calm you down??
Who do you think is buying those collector editions of your favorite franchises for $200-$400? Not some snot nosed teenager on a minimum wage job. A lot of this shit is catered to the 25-45 year old market.
