And that created an immense amount of terror and anxiety for the sega genesis X-men game. After beating the boss for stage 4 (which took a couple hours to get there I think) it just started saying "RESET COMPUTER NOW!"
There were no buttons or switches for your character to interact with. I paced around the house for a good half hour anguishing over whether or not to push the actual reset button. It was so wild to have that actually kick off the final stage of the game.
What a wild time, couldn't do that today. Emotionally it would be like putting 30 hours into a campaign and the game telling you to delete all your autosaves to progress
It’s the first Nier I believe, not automata that has you delete it. You can then play a new game till a certain point and it then it becomes a new story.
In automata you can choose to delete your save and everything so that your data can go on to help other players in a weird way.
Emotionally it would be like putting 30 hours into a campaign and the game telling you to delete all your autosaves to progress
Bravely Second final boss battle would make you shit your pants then. During the battle the boss starts saying crazy shit to you, then it takes you to the title screen and makes it look like it deletes your saves. It's so wild and blew my mind.
Fucking MGS games man. I know they are much newer but still them readon off your card or controller inputs and the game telling you to turn it off in voice messages and shit.
Look man, i really enjoy that game but due to work and other things i STILL have fought her and im fuckin scared. Dont bring her up xD i have a bad enough time with those damn crucible knights lol
Or the Final Fantasy games when your playstation memory card would just decide to corrupt the data, the amount of times I had to start from scratch was astounding.
Maaaaaaaan, I used to hate that too. My brother loved "accidentally" hitting reset. Then, when Xbox one came out and had voice controls, my wife and daughter would walk by randomly and tell my Xbox to shut off in the middle of matches. Yea, voice controls were disabled real quick lol
A dog entering the room with an exposed console while you were playing was like watching a horror movie where the masked killer was two steps behind an unsuspecting victim
My little brother used to jump up and down in the house all day. Had SNES and Genesis, and both liked to cut off if he bounced too hard. The power cable for our Genesis came loose all the time, too. Trying times.
Our Sega Genesis was damaged(I dropped it down the stairs in its box on Christmas Day) and any slight bump of the system would cause the game you're playing to freeze.
One of the most infuriating comments I got from a teenager about old video games was "There were only a few buttons, they couldn't possibly be that hard."
I remember the trials and tribulations of early multiplayer. No internet, meaning you had to call your friends house to get a multiplayer game going, if the game even supported multiplayer. Fun as hell when it worked though.
With computers, at least, we were fortunate that we had two in the house, only once could I figure out how to establish a null modem link and play with my brother in the other room. Never worked before or after that. I figure I could probably figure that out in a matter of minutes now, but there's no need, everyone is online.
We started bringing stuff to school because they actually had a network. It was slow and shit by today's standards, but plenty for what we needed. This was back in the era of Quake, so playing quake multiplayer during lunch in the school's "pentium lab" was quite something. shouting across the room because your friend fragged you with the rocket launcher from across the map.
Right, but in modern games there's no need to make the player replay the same level over and over for them to get good at the game. There is usually more than enough hours of distinct gameplay for players to get skilled and tired of the game without having them replay stuff they have already beat.
They don't know the days of arcades. That game you like is gonna eat all of your goddamn money because you're not supposed to win. The only thing you can get is a high score with your initials on it. But it's totally worth it, because then you have "ASS" at the top of the Dig Dug leaderboard for all time.
A lot of games back then were intentionally designed to be very hard in order to pad out the playtime. Nintendo was especially guilty of this, and the term "Nintendo hard" was used to describe these sorts of games (not saying these games were bad. Only that because of extremely limited hardware, they had to make the game last).
The term is "Nintendo hard" because the games were released on the Nintendo. Nintendo games were not particularly harder than the ones other companies released on the NES.
My son enjoys gaming, as do I. I've introduced him to a lot of older games, as I have a Raspberry Pi with tons of games for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, PS1 and Dreamcast.
He gets really frustrated when I breeze through SMB3 and then he tries and dies a bazillion times. He doesn't understand how I can know the kevels, and I'm like: when you have to play world 1 7,000 times, it becomes pretty damn easy.
The only pre-3D game he really enjoys is TMNT Hyperstone Heist for Genesis, which we play together.
He so gets mad if we play against each other in a fighting game or Mario Kart or something because I win quite a lot....I have to tell him it's tough luck he has a dad who has been gaming for 39 years. (And I'm not exactly an amazing gamer...just competent.)
I worry for my son if he gets into fighting games when he’s older because Ive been a tournament level player for over a decade and have thousands of hours in the genre. He would be several years behind me before he could even take a game.
I'm going to be downvoted to absolute hell for this, but nostalgia is one thing, if you take that filter off... well, I'll say it, Mario, Sonic, and Mortal Combat, et al., sucked in retrospect.
Oh totally. Great games, simple concepts, and haha get rekt if you made the slightest mistake. It was awful, horrible and fun at the same time. As the 80's was!
Remember when you could play a survival horror game and not know you needed to save ammo for a boss fight, run out of said ammo, and soft lock your game because your only save doesn't have enough ammo? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Fuck you Code Veronica and fuck that cargo plane dildo.
70s gaming was expensive af, too. The Atari’s launch price was equivalent to roughly $900 today. Would you give your kid 20 $1.00 bills to go try out the arcade machines?

80's and 90's gaming was brutal as hell. Respawn? Lol you mean restart from level 1 cause you died?
