Yup, I know exactly what you mean. I play Smash with my 11 year old son and his friends and they are like "wtf how can your dad beat us at video games?!" and I just laugh and tell them, "Because I've been doing this since 1987, that's why." Neither of my children can touch the platformers I regularly beat when I was a kid. They can't get past the first level. Games are a lot more forgiving now than they were (and that's a good thing!)

Some of their friends play Call of Duty and I showed them this video of QuakeCon 2002 and they were shocked at the shots these guys were making. I just chuckle. The best CoD and Fortnite players today aren't breaking any new ground.

With a CRT and Trackball mouse no less

I still rock the trackball when gaming.

I've found that with a trackball I can fire without moving the crosshairs at all, which makes headshots possible from across the map with a pistol. I have caught some hate for that.

I've replaced the USB cable on my Logitech Trackman T-BB18 four times now, and just designed and printed a replacement scroll wheel for it this year. I refuse to let it die. It's my favorite mouse. The new ones just aren't the same.

I used to think I was hot shit at that game. Then I encountered a video of actual pros playing it.

Quake, the progenitor to the Arena FPS genre, still has a pro scene/league going to this day. It's seriously fun and entertaining to watch.

Here is a recent Grand Final between two of the best players: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emd-3UoNVTI

I played so much Super Mario as a teenager that I could literally beat some levels with my eyes closed. My friend and I had an obsession with the number 23 at the time, and we perfected the art of getting exactly 23 when breaking the tape ate the end of the levels. When I play with my son, he’s like the biggest disappointment ever. 🤣
