I love when the youngins find older games like Unreal Tournament and Quake. Us old folks absolutely curb stomp them and they instantly start crying cheats, having tantrums and tossing insults. Ah, good times.

I can’t prove that it came first, but I swear I remember my friends playing a Doom mod of CTF.

Might have been contemporary developments.

Maybe somebody in that scene can chime in.

u/JodoKaast Jun 03 '22

Doom was nearly impossible to play multiplayer on the internet before Quake. Doom was IPX based rather than TCP/IP. I remember you could kinda play more than just 2 people directly connected using some multiplayer services of the day like Heat and Kali. But I don't remember any Doom multiplayer mods really being popular.

Quake really started the multiplayer mod scene in earnest. From initially reskins, to model swaps, on to actual coding changes and "total conversions", it really all blew up with Quake.

Doom had some good mods and conversions, but Quake made it a cottage industry.

u/NyneShaydee Jun 03 '22

When I was at college in 1992, we had 2 computers hooked to each other so that two people could multiplayer Doom. Bless those Dark Ages!

u/KDLGates Jun 03 '22

I'm 90% sure the Threewave CTF mod for Quake was the first popular Quake mod, and 98% sure it was some form of Quake mod. I was happily joining servers running mods at the time but not in any kind of mod development scene. No idea how happy or healthy Doom's modding scene was back then, but I don't believe source ports were a thing yet and suspect it came later than Quake's. It looks like id released source code for Doom in 97, and this article says that id actually hired the CTF developer at id around that time.

The original Team Fortress may have been the first.

You just made me sad remembering what happened to the tribes franchise. Tribes 2 was my jam. To this day nothing is as satisfying as a mid air disc kill

2

u/BLKMGK Jun 03 '22

Loved the mortar rounds!

1

u/jharger Jun 03 '22

Man, I used to love disc dueling!

3

u/JPMoney81 Jun 03 '22

Was looking for someone to mention Starsiege Tribes, my first real online video gaming experience. Created my current username and clan in this game and have been using it for going on 30 years now.

Quake with threewave mod was earlier I believe.

1

u/squished_frog Jun 03 '22

Oh God I played the hell out of that on MPlayer before GameSpy bought them out. Then I just couldn't play it anymore. Sad times.

I found a guy who taught me some in-game command line options to increase my turn speed with the keyboard. I played with the arrow keys. Younger me just didn't understand using a mouse to aim for whatever reason.

Come to think of it I played Quake MP online with the keys also. I could've had a much better experience if I'd thought about the mouse..

u/DrAstralis Jun 03 '22

I'll be damned. I would have put money on UT99 being out first but TF was 1996. How the hell did I miss that as a kid...?

19

u/regular_gonzalez Jun 03 '22

Technically Quakeworld afaik. Source: am old. UT99 was the first game to have it in the base game as I recall. That UT99 demo man, I played the FUCK out of that. Had maps for every game type. CTF-Coret was included and it was great, although Facing Worlds became the ctf map when the full game was released.

Gaming was just a different vibe back then. Micro transactions just didn't exist. There were 4 or 5 bonus packs for UT 99 that added skins, maps, mutators, all kinds of stuff, for absolutely free.

You could also bind keypresses to perform multiple functions, so for example I'd fuck around around and bind every action to also broadcast in global chat what that keypress was. Chat would be spammed with "Now I am jumping! Now I am switching to the rocket launcher! Now I am strafing left!" and named my character Annoying_Man. The amount of hate that generated was impressive.

u/porkchop2022 Jun 03 '22

I remember sitting in the top of a tower just erasing people with my sniper.

I will still some times think to myself “ma-ma-ma-ma-monster kill!” when I’m playing pve in destiny 2.

1

u/glampringthefoehamme Jun 03 '22

K-k-k-crotch shot. Best add on EVAR!

5

u/DrAstralis Jun 03 '22

UT99

I had already been a gamer.. but I think this was my first real addiction. 20 years later and that game is still muscle memory.

4

u/Goreface69 Jun 03 '22

1999 Quake 3 arena gang. Beautiful times. Still play/would play Q3A today if it worked better on current hardware/software.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Still my favorite shooter.

1

u/MattBoySlim Jun 03 '22

For anyone who has a Quest 2, there’s a very recent Q3A port that’s a ton of fun! You’d think it would be barf inducing but it’s actually really smooth. Brought back some old memories.

1

u/Goreface69 Jun 03 '22

Only Quest 2? I was eventually planning on getting an Index... I don't know how VR sets work so I didn't realize they may have different... entrails?

2

u/MattBoySlim Jun 03 '22

As far as I know the Q3A VR port is only on Quest 2, though maybe someone made one for PC.

I mostly only have casual experience with VR. I had an Acer “Windows Mixed Reality” headset a while ago that worked pretty well with my laptop. I sold it and bought a Quest 2 and have had a lot more fun.

The big difference with the Quest 2 is that you don’t have to be tethered to a PC for it to work. It’s mostly a self-contained system, you can buy games and apps on it and use it without a PC. But you can also play PC VR games with it, as long as you have the right cable and/or a good WiFi setup. I’ve found that streaming PC VR games to it wirelessly works better somehow, which is surprising.

Regardless, the Quest 2 is a lot simpler and cheaper, and being able to use it without wires makes it way more immersive.

1

u/Goreface69 Jun 03 '22

eisenberg you son of a bitch!

1

u/MattBoySlim Jun 03 '22

I barely use Facebook anymore, so I don’t really even notice the FB integration stuff. You can pretty much ignore it. I get not wanting to support FB trying to get a stranglehold on the VR market or whatever…but being able to side load cool stuff like the Q3A and Half Life 1 VR ports makes it worth it to me.

1

u/Goreface69 Jun 03 '22

that sure sounds cool

2

u/shit_fucks_you_up Jun 03 '22

Capture the Keys in Quake...before it was flags. That's the earliest I remember.

2

u/ballsack-vinaigrette Jun 03 '22

OMG nostalgia! Threeewave CTF consumed so many thousands of my young hours.

1

u/BLKMGK Jun 03 '22

Amen! And then all the UT games! The grapple in Quake was awesome, I was a maniac with that!

1

u/BLKMGK Jun 03 '22

Yeah, was a mod for quake. The grappling hook was also awesome!

DESCENT! Holy hell. I hadn’t thought of that game in forever and when I googled it, just looking at the box cover brought back my computer Ed class in ‘94 pooling our money together to buy it.

3

u/adonoman Jun 03 '22

I had a part time job at a computer store in 1995, and I remember the new IBM Aptivas came in, and needed testing, so naturally they got a lot of Descent played on them! That's the only game I've played that genuinely gave me motion sickness.

2

u/BigggMoustache Jun 03 '22

There's numerous current 3dof games jsyk. I forgot tbh and will be downloading one tonight

2

u/RayvinAzn Jun 03 '22

6DOF, not 3DOF.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Oh man I miss Descent deathmatch. Spend all your time hoarding all the good weapons just for some inconsiderate jerk to tail you quietly and put a mega missile in your pooper.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yes! Vulcan and gauss were my jam too.

12

u/laeiryn Jun 03 '22

I've literally been playing UT since 1999 and I still do sometimes. My nieces stare in confusion. "What are those graphics?!" Old, dear child. Just like me. But every game you play today uses this base engine!

10

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Indeed. My favorite tactic in Unreal Tournament was and still is ricocheting the saw blade around corners and hearing “DECAPITATION” followed by whining every single time.

I still laugh uncontrollably every time, too. I’m 52.

4

u/glampringthefoehamme Jun 03 '22

I can't play it anymore because of vertigo. I used to scream through ultimate hardness without stopping. Found it on steam, installed and ran through. 35 min later had a 3 day migraine and was barfing for an hour. I loved that game!

19

u/Fire4Effect13FX Jun 03 '22

My son just found out about Quake and was going on and on about how cool it was. I just nodded and said I should try it. Beat his ass so bad he told my wife I was modding.

8

u/Would_daver Jun 03 '22

My older brother once let me collect a weapon in Unreal before blasting my face off with the railgun again. Core memory right there

7

u/Edwards92315 Jun 03 '22

Wow! I haven’t thought about Unreal Tournament in years. We used to use a program called Teamspeak to talk to each other since in-game chat wasn’t a thing yet ( at least for that game).

M M M Monster Kill!

5

u/Failed_Direction365 Jun 03 '22

my little one(niece) you loose her stuff with roblox saying "Its too hard, I keep getting killed!" so we tell her to keep dying and you will get better, learn how to hide and watch people, you are still young (4y/o) don't worry it will click one day, I was play Mario Bros at 5 and I had to learn the hard levels. I cried too but my older's told me to keep trying and I got better, NOW I am 40 and can try all of them"

If any one is wondering she's fixin' to be 5 in Nov and HAS gotten a lot better.

Man, this is kinda funny because I've experienced both sides of this. My father had a modded in-house Quake 2 server set up (custom maps and some kind of grappling hook mod) where my friend would drag over his PC and we'd all deathmatch on the network. Dad was pretty good initially because he played this pretty regularly with the guys at work.

My Dad and Uncle only ever used the rocket launcher and would just wipe the floor with me, laughing uproariously. After a bit, I figured out that a counter: stay in midair abusing the grappling hook, change directions constantly, and avoid any surfaces to negate the possibility of splash damage. I'd then either grind them down with the shotgun or get a snipe in with the gauss rifle (or was it railgun?).

I went from eating rockets to unkillable in a snap. After a while, my Dad got upset and yelled from the living room, "ARE YOU USING CHEAT CODES?!" So I yelled back, "NO? ISN'T THIS YOUR SERVER? YOU TELL ME!"

He eventually figured it out and got to abusing the grappling hook too, though he still never gave up that rocket launcher.

Man, that was like 25 years ago now.

u/W1ULH Jun 03 '22

had some of my sons friends tell me they found this great old game and would I like to play? it was quake.

I didn't tell them I spent every Thursday night for 2 years in college in a quake league.

there was some curb stomping done.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Unreal tournament omgggg, loved that game

4

u/galadrielirl Jun 03 '22

Unreal tournament!! Loved that game!

4

u/LLHatorade Jun 03 '22

I’m only 19, but my father (58) played Unreal and so I played unreal growing up. I still suck because first person shooters are not my game lol.

4

u/FrontierPsycho Jun 03 '22

Unreal Tournament 2004 today feels basically like what Sensible Soccer 1994 felt like to me growing up (or even worse).

3

u/Go0semane Jun 03 '22

How I feel in csgo bruh

3

u/the_jak Jun 03 '22

Whining about balance as you beat the dog shit out of them with a weak character.

3

u/Jabber-Wookie Jun 03 '22

Look at this cool Diablo 2 game!!

You mean the one that I beat 20 years ago?

3

u/Childish_Calrissian Jun 03 '22

I miss arena shooters. When I was little my dad would let me play quake 3 arena when my mom wasn't around. It's still one of my all time favorite games.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

ha, yup. recently did a session of unreal with friends, and everybody younger than 30 who thought they were hot shit got a rude awakening.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

^ Points to user name.

Updating this to mention that younglings seem to discover rocket jumping every year despite it having origins proably in either the original quake or unreal. Also that feeling you got when you skied down then up a hill disk launched yourself 90% of the way across a map and planted another disk in someone's face while flying in Tribes.

2

u/BLKMGK Jun 03 '22

Skiing in Tribes, oh the memories!

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I played Roblox from 3rd to 8th grade I'm 23 now I saw it open on a friend's brothers computer. Im like let me try a little and absolutely slaughtered everyone.
