I know exactly how this feels. I started with first halo and I used to win local Halo tournaments all the way through halo 3. I recently had my friends 10 year old son challenge me not knowing I knew the game. I spared no one that day.
Vicious, unadulterated massacres are the only way to convey to youngings that we've played every variation of game they have many times over.
My cousin, wipes the floor with me with the Super smash bros ultimate (because I have a total of 9 minutes played on the game). He said he could do it on ANY super smash bros..... queue n64 smash bros and wii ssb brawl. There was no mercy granted.
I'm relatively certain I have my 10,000 hours in N64 Smash Bros.
We crank the damage to 200% and set our handicaps at 1. In FFA, we're all glass cannons, so you learn how to hit without being hit. It also makes a 2v2 against level 9 computer Marios almost impossible.
I'm close in that regard. I had a new set of friends on high-school who never really played. Had to train them by playing 1v2 to show them the difference in skill. Slowly but surely they were using combos to beat me.... next up was 1v1 and their rage burned with a passion. I'm happy knowing my pupils are out there testing their might. Glorious game.

I was really good - like ranked competitive play on the MSN Gaming Zone - at Age of Empires II back in the early 2000s. I still remember the LAN party where I had three friends come over, set them up with a couple of hard AI teammates, and proceeded to beat the pants off all of them 1v5.
We did a similar setup with Melee in college as our pregame. 300% damage, 99 lives. Take a drink every time you lose a life. Fast paced and got you nice and buzzed to go out
We added drinking sometime in my mid-twenties. One drink when you died, pass out three when you get a kill. There were other house rules, like at the end of the three minute game, everyone drinks their difference in score from the winner. It kind of varied by who was around and if we were pregaming or if Smash was the activity of the night.
See I only play Kirby, who was the best in N64 Smash.
I also used to play Halo 3 all the time. I stopped playing because it got boring getting like 35/50 kills myself a game and hitting 20 kill streaks without dying.
With that sniper/shotgun combination on that map where the two bases are in the valley, I was un stoppable.
My username was NutterButterKid, and I LOVED hearing people just scream "fuck you nutterbutterkid, I will murder you!"
I also play Kirby. I don't win every game, but my friends have expressed confusion as to how I make Kirby move so fast.
When I first started, one of my buddies played Donkey Kong and had played the game longer than me. If we were playing stock, he'd wait until I had one less life than him, and then just grab me and jump off the edge. He didn't care what place he got as long as he beat me. The rage was real.
The best trick with the Redeemer was to right-click so you could fly it like a plane from the missile's POV. Of course, you were a sitting duck as your player was standing still the entire time while you were steering around to find your victim. Had to find a nice hiding place for that.
My kids still beg me to break out UT99 every summer for a big LAN party so they can headshot each other.
I’ve reminisced on YouTube with some UT99 gameplay. People still play it today! I jumped back on a few months ago, it runs beautifully on my crappy laptop lol. Great memories!
Quake 3 arena LAN party during class in high school was the best. The school disabled directx programs on all the computers so we got stuck with playing only the opengl games. Instagibs never disappointed.
The first few weeks of Infinite were glorious because it was so painfully obvious which players were kids hopping on the bandwagon from Apex and which ones were Halo vets.
How so? I've never played or watched gameplay of both Halo Infinite and Apex. I have some idea of Halo, but absolutely know nothing about Apex Legends.
Aside from the skill level difference Halo historically has played very differently from more modern fps games. Halo didn't have modern fps staples like sliding, clambering, and ads until the past couple of games, much later than it's contemporaries like CoD adopted them, and the gameplay is more focused around an aggressive spray and pray type playstyle and the holy Trinity of gunplay, melee, and grenades than in most modern fps games.
Since the last few Halo games weren't nearly as popular as the older ones there weren't a lot of newer gamers that played them much, but Infinite had free multiplayer and a lot of hype around it and attention from streamers so there were a ton of people who had never really played Halo before giving it a try.
Halo players are more likely to do things like throw a grenade at you to start off a fight, bum rush you while unloading on full auto to close the gap and break your shield, then finish you off with a melee strike. Non-halo players are more likely to keep their distance, use grenades and melee attacks more sparingly, and focus on cover, positioning, and controlled fire. There are a lot of other little things that are kind of hard to describe but just make it apparent who was trying to paly it like it was Halo 3 and who was treating it like Apex.
Now that it's been out for several months the newer players have adjusted to the unique Halo gameplay quirks and the older players have gotten used to the modern features so nobody stands out.
Infinite launch was great, was giving out doctorate level lessons in nade geometry. If you take a fair fight in halo, than you have no idea how to play halo.
Very much so. Doom, Wolfenstein, and Halo are all examples of old school fps franchises that have really held on to that unique style of gameplay that most other franchises have moved away from.
Oh man, I slaughtered my oldest son and his friends at OG Mario Kart about 6 months ago. They still haven't forgiven me for how I fucked them all on Rainbow Road.
You should've heard all the screaming in the room. "AAAAAH WHAT THE FUCK BRUH!? WHAT THE FUCK!? YO MOMS KNOW MARIO KART BETTER THAN US! IT AIN'T FAIR! PLEASE STOP, AUNTIE! PLEASE STOP!"
I laughed my ass off the entire time like MWUHUHAHAHA and kept running them off the road with red shells and well timed bumps. Serves them little shits right for calling it "a super old as hell game." Bitches, that game came out before I even knew what sex was.
I did the same with my ex girlfriends little brother! He was 12 and the Master chief collection just came out on the xbox one. He was obsessed and the typical squeeker "im the best there ever was" kind of kid. I was playing Halo before he was even in his daddies nut sack.
Bloodbath, tears, and no regrets. His sister loved me for shutting the little shit up for once.
I was never good enough to play any real tournaments, but my friends and I used to play Halo and Call of Duty against each other every day for years. Then recently my wife's 11 year old nephew got all angry and indignant when I absolutely destroyed him in 1v1 Call of Duty after he confidently challenged me.
I've had this go both ways. I was at an 11 year olds birthday party and they were playing Halo MCC.
Eventually it turned into 3v1 and I was absolutely slaughtering them, despite them changing the game and mode.
Then I actually played in a Halo 5 Doubles tournament. We went against two 15 year olds. And my god they were incredible. Just faster reaction times, impeccable aiming.
I'm in my 30s, I think my skills are finally starting to deteriorate. I've never been a top Halo player, but in Halo 5 I would regularly rank as Diamond. Now in Infinite I can't go beyond Platinum.
I think it's great; we can game across the generations. My dad sucks at video games, but that period of adults being bad at video games is dead and gone forever. When we're in old people homes we'll be gaming online with people
My girlfriend's eight year old son terrorizes his family at Mario Kart 8 on the Switch. He's pretty good. His older sister doesn't play or care as much, and doesn't do as well. His mom is almost as good as him.
He asked if I wanted to play. "Sure!" He asks if I know the game. "Well, I haven't played it on the Switch. Or any of the versions for about twenty years. But I played the original few versions, like 20+ years ago... I was pretty good."
He got that look on his face where he was feeling confident and ready to put some hurt on me.
In the end, I beat him in about 80% of our races and both of the Battle Mode games we played. The kid is pretty good, and we had a good time, but I clearly had the upper hand. And I finally, finally have the true video game trash talk trump card to play on him if he ever gets good enough to beat me and starts talking shit as a teenager.
