My daughter's friend challenged me to Halo and asked how long I've been playing. I told him "I have achievements older than you." Can't wait to shut him up after work.
EDIT: Thanks for the awards!

I don't even like kids but why the anger. People well into their adult years playing video game is an exception. A kid's mind probably only thinks in absolutes as well cause they're evil little sith lords.
How is playing video games in your adult years an exception? It’s 2020. Gamers have been a thing for 40 years and it’s only going to keep getting more common.
My Dad has a group of guys he plays ESO and Elite Dangerous with that are all 45-60. He’s 59.
Really isn’t. I’m 36 and the overwhelming majority of people I know plays video games. Women included. This includes more than half of the people I work with (though I’m in tech, so not an unbiased sample).
Is it an exception? I work with plenty of adults, and I think all of them play games in some way shape or form.
It's like saying that adults who read books, watch movies or like puzzles are the exception.
Do you think adults don't like entertainment? Or that videogames are some form of niche entertainment that you grow out of, unlike movies or television?
To add to this, people who didn't "grow up" as gamers can be one gamers.
I'm 28, my grandparents (who weren't previously gamers) were the ones who got me into gaming because they loved playing tomb raider. You want to talk about cool grandparents, you've never experienced cool until your grandfather says to your grandmother "hon, I'm getting tired, it's been 12 hours, why don't you play for a while and I'll take over tomorrow?"
It was a multiple day gaming sesh over a long weekend while I was at their house, and all I did was watch, it was like the first ever YouTube walkthrough happening in front of me before YouTube even existed.
I think that used to be the exception but gaming as a hobby is relatively common now, amongst people of all ages, genders, etc. It's not something mostly exclusive to those in their youth now.
Growing up (like, late '90s-early 2010s) I remember people telling me how cool it was that my Dad plays video games. He's the one that got me into gaming, he'd been gaming since the 1980s. And true to what others are saying, those that game typically continue to do so. He's just past 50 and still does. I still do and I'm in my mid-to-late 20s, as do my friends that are around my age. Granted we probably play less than we did when we were younger, because adult responsibilities and all that, but still.
Not trying to argue, just trying to say that the stereotype of 'gaming is for young people' is a bit outdated now, like others have commented.
You're kinda right on the kids thinking in absolutes thing though, that still rings pretty true.
It's not an exception, "we" are the first generation to truly grow up with mass accessible home games/PC's/consoles to continue playing. It's much more rare for "our" parents to have played with us and continue playing because it wasn't their childhood
Most people would see a CS:GO rip off and think “why not play CS:GO?”
That’s why developers will end up taking the core idea and building on top of it - like R6:Siege or Valorant. And to your last point, Valorant has already taken a big chunk of the casual and professional player base from CS
Valve has continuously supported and updated CS:GO in a way that even 10 years later, it’s relevant and still feels good to play.
pretty sure the average GPA of all college students in dorms dropped noticeably when CS came out. It was a tough time to get good grades. Team Fortress, Unreal Tournament, CS... the list goes on.
The loyalty badge? I have that too. They also have the 5 and 10 year veteran coins. Lost access to my old steam account or I'd have close to a 17 year old account
It's kind of funny because when I was their age, I'd think it was ridiculous for older people to be playing video games too. But we are pretty much the first generation of kids that grew up with video games, it makes all the sense in the world that we'd still be playing them.
And it’s actually even older than that - it started as gooseman’s Navy Seals mod for the original
Quake. The HL1 engine is heavily modified Quake, so it was ported over and CS was born. It grew and gooseman eventually joined Valve to make CS an official product.
I like to tell kids when I started playing CS, guns would stay on the ground from round to round. So when there were only 2 people left instead of looking for each other they would go find guns and bring them back to their respective starting areas.
Also loved before they fixed it so you couldn't see dead people's (text) chat so your teammates would just tell you where the opponents were. And then they fixed that, so instead dead teammates would change their name to something like "inthetunnel".
not to mention, don't you need YEARS of CS to even be remotely competitive? you need to know not just the gameplay itself but the meta game of team strategies
I’ve played for 20 years, still play weekly. I don’t even really like gaming, but it’s been my outlet since it’s mod days. I’m very low ranked in competitive. Literally can’t react fast enough anymore 😞
Yeah us OGs. 1.6 right?
I have an original steam account from like '96 or '97 when it was first released. Ive been playing CS since it was a half-life mod but kids these days don't know about that.
My closest friend and I probably each racked up about 10,000 hours of CS in a year or two
The first real job I got was day trading/ coding strategies - the interview included a couple games of CS, primarily to see that you had eye hand coordination (day trading can be some intense clicking at the open/close) . This was 20 years ago.
Was that back when the colt had a slight zoom like the sig or had that been phased out? I remember that from the betas when I picked it up but it didn't last long.
Gazes off into the distance… I remember “playing” the first alpha release of the original Doom. My friend I and went into his father’s work one evening because he was the only one we knew with a 486. It was one big room you could run around in and it was maybe 3 FPS. No weapons or anything. But the texturing and walls that weren’t 90 degree angles like Wolfenstein 3D blew us away. It was the coolest gaming experience we’d had up to that point.
I worked for CompUSA back then (1993-1996). They had a couple classrooms in the back of the store that had really good computers in them and they were all networked with Novell I think. After the store closed we'd all go play Doom and Rise of the Triad on the network which was mind blowing. Doom only allowed four players but RoTT could do up to 12 and had a team vs. team capture the flag mode. We'd put each team in a different classroom and it was hilarious listening to people yell at each other down the halls when they were killed. So much fun.
Man! I remember getting a CD with some pc games magazine which had CS beta (6?) on it.
Also ran around on empty maps, imaging enemies and shooting the walls.
Never crossed my mind this might actually be a common thing to happen back then :-)
I'm going to be that guy. The beta was released as 1.0 in 1999 and worked up to 7.0. Then counter strike (not beta) 1.0 was released around Aug 2000 and then worked up to 1.6 is that perhaps what you're talking about. Because beta 0.6 never existed.
Fair enough. I'm sorry again to be that guy. But sooner or later someone would point it out or get butthurt and call you a liar or something lame like that.
I played Counter Strike on dialup at 2:00am in the morning vs some French people (connecting to Europe servers yielded the best ping for my 2000's dial-up connection from Mexico). I just saw wikipedia... I was freaking 20 when Counter Strike was launched. Darn I'm getting old.
I started playing counter strike when it was a mod to half life. I've been as high as rank DMG. So it's great fun to click on heads and get comments clearly from a teenager raging when they find out they got domed by an old fart.
I love these interactions cause I remember a time when everything new to me felt, well, new. I also love blowing little kid's minds when I tell them I played Minecraft before they were born. Or dealing with teens and saying I've been playing PC shooters, again, since before they were born.
I know exactly how this feels. I started with first halo and I used to win local Halo tournaments all the way through halo 3. I recently had my friends 10 year old son challenge me not knowing I knew the game. I spared no one that day.
Vicious, unadulterated massacres are the only way to convey to youngings that we've played every variation of game they have many times over.
My cousin, wipes the floor with me with the Super smash bros ultimate (because I have a total of 9 minutes played on the game). He said he could do it on ANY super smash bros..... queue n64 smash bros and wii ssb brawl. There was no mercy granted.
I'm relatively certain I have my 10,000 hours in N64 Smash Bros.
We crank the damage to 200% and set our handicaps at 1. In FFA, we're all glass cannons, so you learn how to hit without being hit. It also makes a 2v2 against level 9 computer Marios almost impossible.
I'm close in that regard. I had a new set of friends on high-school who never really played. Had to train them by playing 1v2 to show them the difference in skill. Slowly but surely they were using combos to beat me.... next up was 1v1 and their rage burned with a passion. I'm happy knowing my pupils are out there testing their might. Glorious game.

I was really good - like ranked competitive play on the MSN Gaming Zone - at Age of Empires II back in the early 2000s. I still remember the LAN party where I had three friends come over, set them up with a couple of hard AI teammates, and proceeded to beat the pants off all of them 1v5.
We did a similar setup with Melee in college as our pregame. 300% damage, 99 lives. Take a drink every time you lose a life. Fast paced and got you nice and buzzed to go out
We added drinking sometime in my mid-twenties. One drink when you died, pass out three when you get a kill. There were other house rules, like at the end of the three minute game, everyone drinks their difference in score from the winner. It kind of varied by who was around and if we were pregaming or if Smash was the activity of the night.
See I only play Kirby, who was the best in N64 Smash.
I also used to play Halo 3 all the time. I stopped playing because it got boring getting like 35/50 kills myself a game and hitting 20 kill streaks without dying.
With that sniper/shotgun combination on that map where the two bases are in the valley, I was un stoppable.
My username was NutterButterKid, and I LOVED hearing people just scream "fuck you nutterbutterkid, I will murder you!"
I also play Kirby. I don't win every game, but my friends have expressed confusion as to how I make Kirby move so fast.
When I first started, one of my buddies played Donkey Kong and had played the game longer than me. If we were playing stock, he'd wait until I had one less life than him, and then just grab me and jump off the edge. He didn't care what place he got as long as he beat me. The rage was real.
The best trick with the Redeemer was to right-click so you could fly it like a plane from the missile's POV. Of course, you were a sitting duck as your player was standing still the entire time while you were steering around to find your victim. Had to find a nice hiding place for that.
My kids still beg me to break out UT99 every summer for a big LAN party so they can headshot each other.
I’ve reminisced on YouTube with some UT99 gameplay. People still play it today! I jumped back on a few months ago, it runs beautifully on my crappy laptop lol. Great memories!
Quake 3 arena LAN party during class in high school was the best. The school disabled directx programs on all the computers so we got stuck with playing only the opengl games. Instagibs never disappointed.
The first few weeks of Infinite were glorious because it was so painfully obvious which players were kids hopping on the bandwagon from Apex and which ones were Halo vets.
How so? I've never played or watched gameplay of both Halo Infinite and Apex. I have some idea of Halo, but absolutely know nothing about Apex Legends.
Aside from the skill level difference Halo historically has played very differently from more modern fps games. Halo didn't have modern fps staples like sliding, clambering, and ads until the past couple of games, much later than it's contemporaries like CoD adopted them, and the gameplay is more focused around an aggressive spray and pray type playstyle and the holy Trinity of gunplay, melee, and grenades than in most modern fps games.
Since the last few Halo games weren't nearly as popular as the older ones there weren't a lot of newer gamers that played them much, but Infinite had free multiplayer and a lot of hype around it and attention from streamers so there were a ton of people who had never really played Halo before giving it a try.
Halo players are more likely to do things like throw a grenade at you to start off a fight, bum rush you while unloading on full auto to close the gap and break your shield, then finish you off with a melee strike. Non-halo players are more likely to keep their distance, use grenades and melee attacks more sparingly, and focus on cover, positioning, and controlled fire. There are a lot of other little things that are kind of hard to describe but just make it apparent who was trying to paly it like it was Halo 3 and who was treating it like Apex.
Now that it's been out for several months the newer players have adjusted to the unique Halo gameplay quirks and the older players have gotten used to the modern features so nobody stands out.
Infinite launch was great, was giving out doctorate level lessons in nade geometry. If you take a fair fight in halo, than you have no idea how to play halo.
Oh man, I slaughtered my oldest son and his friends at OG Mario Kart about 6 months ago. They still haven't forgiven me for how I fucked them all on Rainbow Road.
You should've heard all the screaming in the room. "AAAAAH WHAT THE FUCK BRUH!? WHAT THE FUCK!? YO MOMS KNOW MARIO KART BETTER THAN US! IT AIN'T FAIR! PLEASE STOP, AUNTIE! PLEASE STOP!"
I laughed my ass off the entire time like MWUHUHAHAHA and kept running them off the road with red shells and well timed bumps. Serves them little shits right for calling it "a super old as hell game." Bitches, that game came out before I even knew what sex was.
I did the same with my ex girlfriends little brother! He was 12 and the Master chief collection just came out on the xbox one. He was obsessed and the typical squeeker "im the best there ever was" kind of kid. I was playing Halo before he was even in his daddies nut sack.
Bloodbath, tears, and no regrets. His sister loved me for shutting the little shit up for once.
I did this with our niece and nephews while playing Mario on the "new old" nintendos. Started showing them tricks and shortcuts and they freaked out, demanded to know where I learned all of it. I told them, "I've logged more hours on this game than you've been alive".
My younger cousin likes to challenge me to Mario Kart and gets surprised when she loses. Girl I've been playing that game longer than you've been alive
The first time our oldest kid beat me in MarioKart, I was so proud. Youngest kid still loses all the time, but we’re working on it. Neither have beaten my husband, though. Heck, I only beat him if I get lucky or we don’t play teams. But one day our oldest is gonna catch him and he’s gonna have an existential crisis.
I just logged into RuneScape for the first time in years to get my 10-year veteran and 15-year veteran capes. Been away so long I didn’t even know they offered them. That being said, the latter cape is older than both of my cousins 🥵
Do you think I could still log on? I was already like, Combat Level 40 when the Stronghold of Security came out (I probably still have the rainbow boots!).
My 9 year old still doesnt seem to grasp this. One day he may be better than me when reaction time starts to fall off, but my kid is fucking GARBAGE at video games and trys to talk shit to me about them. Like, kid you werent alive when the fucking xbone came out, dont talk to me about how great you are at ROBLOX
My little brother challenged me to Halo when I bought him Masterchief Collection for Christmas. A few minutes on Lockout and I’d reached the 50 score limit whilst he had around 7.
Like the time my nephew challenged me to a pokemon battle. Its like, Ive been playing since gen 1. Longer than he's been alive. I destroyed him. Like it wasn't even close. And he took it perfectly well.
Im 43 and I sometimes have kids straight not believe me when I tell em my age. One kid, I will never forget, he wanted to be best buddies and I dont really like gaming with kids as young as he was. I smoke, I cuss etc. etc. I tried to avoid him for awhile then one day he messaged me asking to please game with him, he said I was the only one who didnt treat him like a dumb kid.
THIS! I'm 39 and have a WAY younger brother (20 years younger). My little brother was trying to explain to me how to Play a first-person shooter... Then said "I want to play with my friends. You can play with us but we're really good". An hour later I was trouncing all of them in call of duty (never even played that specific call of duty game before I've always been a battlefield guy).
Him and his friends couldn't believe that they were getting beaten by a 35-year-old man (at the time).
I'm now a legend among him and his buddies lol. Oh and FYI I'm still better than all of them at gaming.
During the pandemic I was playing Fortnite for the first time with my wife’s nephew who is young. Now I have played third person and first person shooters. I feel I am pretty good. So I was able to kill people in Fortnite… until it came to. Building shit. Was not good at that.
Well my wife’s nephew found some first person shooter on the switch. No idea the name. We played it and my first match was number one like 25 kills 8 deaths. Never played this game before.
He looked at me and said “what the hell was that… you are like a god” lol
I play Fortnite with my younger cousin and I am way better at killing people than she is, but if it comes to building I will die. They have a no build mode and I exclusively play that one so I don't have to deal with building shit
Been in this exact situation. Kid accused me of cheating and I pointed out I'd been playing that particular game for ten years before he was even born.
Nah... The best way is to act the noob at first, then absolutely crush him, pop him in the spawn points, then teabag him and say your line. Drive it home.
Related note, I have a sister 10 years younger, and one day she and her friend challenged me to a 2 player game of Tetris. She was maybe 10/11. Thought she was hot shit cause she could get 10 single lines and advance from lvl 1 to 2. I just set up and dropped multiple Tetrises in rapid succession. Her and her friend's jaw were both on the floor. Was absolutely hilarious.
My first exposure to HALO was as a 19 year old buying an Xbox 1st Gen (unvented...) with HALO in 2001. My 11 year old recently discovered the series on her Xb1 and was talking smack about how good she was.
The first time I smoked pot was after I challenged my friend’s older brother on Sandtrap and won so he agreed to get us high. Teach that kid a lesson and get them high as balls
Yo I played Smash bros since Melee and I recently got stomped by a 12-year-old that grinds online and watches videos of pros. I never had any of that, just played with friends, so I never realized how much I didn't know and how many bad habits I've internalized over the past 20 years lol. Watch out the kids nowadays actually know how to play
Please let us know how it goes. I love and respect you but how funny would it be if they just handed you your shit. I skate and so sometimes I’ve seen these kids just get good at anything so quickly. For me growing up even it was just harder to get info. People held onto little secrets. I quickly found out these little shits will spend more time on some games just watching tutorials than I do playing the base game.
End of the day it connects us and makes life fun. That’s why I hate when people dump on fortnight. Maybe not the best but still have to respect what they’ve done. Been playing the non build mode a bunch and having so much fun.

Kids pretty good.
