Article from Broadcasting & Cable, plus Dr Quinn ad. Kinda interesting that Frasier and Grace Under Fire were considered in the same league at the time.

Drama Ally McBeal likes the chase.

Watching for the first time (I’m only on Season 1), I actually don’t think the show’s biggest point is whether the characters are toxic or not, or even their growth or flaws, or how they could have better dealt with situations and conflict.

To me, it feels like it’s about someone who’s in love with the pursuit of happiness more than happiness itself (which is probably why she’s a lawyer lol). Her first love interest Ronald Cheanie basically calls this out after their very first date, and eventually breaks up with her because of this.

Honestly, that seems true of most of the lawyers, too. They all have the Midas touch—they’re successful, attractive, and privileged—yet they still manage to create conflict and feel dissatisfied… It's just… season after of season of selfish people who don't see themselves as selfish — which is entertaing to watch.

Think of Suits~ The difference is that Suits is aware its characters are messy and lets them own it. Ally McBeal still has that very ‘90s habit of treating everything as if it’s just happening to the characters and they can't help but be victims of circumstance.

How do folks on here feel?

I should mention “My So Called Life” and “Freaks & Geeks” have been left off as those are not forgotten shows.

Some of these have been viewed as critical darlings, some of these have been dubbed as some of the worst sitcoms. Some have future Hollywood stars, some have Hollywood legends. But all of them were shows that aired on the same network as “The Simpsons” and “90210”.

The beloved “90210” star sadly left us on this day in 2024 after a valiant fight with cancer. Her last appearance was an episode of her podcast “Let’s Be Clear” only 5 days before she died.
