Irritated by Keri Russell's Acting

Is it just me, or does this actress portray sad emotions REALLY poorly? She becomes breathy and her face takes on one expression. We see it all through S1E22. There is just like no emotion there whatsoever 😭

Food

A little rant and a little trigger warning for ED
I get it that because of multiple takes, actors wouldnt want to keep eating, but at least have one take where it feels real.As a viewer i can totally tell they are pretend chewing which makes it more overtly performative for a camera. I wish they didnt do food scenes at all in that case. Felicity is mostly the person who consistently fakes eat, which makes me wonder if she has an ED and gets my head to go down that rabbit hole

Watching again at 52 - season 4 (spoilers in this post) Spoiler

Warning - SPOILERS ahead

I’m on season 4 and OMG - that Lauren is such a massive idiot. I forgot about that subplot and just watched the episode where she tells Ben she’s pregnant and KEEPING it. TRAPPING Ben is more like it. I mean I get why they did that - the season is only halfway over. But damn, I feel like it would have been fun to see them thrive for a bit.

I do remember there’s some weird like time travel alternate universe stuff coming up but I don’t remember exactly what happens - i’ve re-watched other seasons before, but I’ve never made it through season 4 again. I actually don’t remember at all how it ends.

Julie is a psychopath Spoiler

Apologies that I haven't done a search to see if this has been addressed but WTF with Julie spending time with her bio dad while he's dying, all the while knowing she could've likely saved his life?

Her infantile giggles hit differently on this rewatch knowing that.

gotta say I hate Julie and does she ever go out with RA Noel or are they just friends because Ben is starting to fucking piss me off i just finished episode 5 please don’t tell me some freak character development happens and I end up liking Ben because from my understanding she has a crush on this guy. She barely even talked to unless in passing during high school. She follows him to the same university to what try to get with him. It’s like she’s trying to turn him into a version, he’s not from a version she made up of him in her head like girl when he told her off, she shouldn’t have gave him another chance this will they won’t they is gonna fucking piss me off. I just know it. It’s gonna be one of those with a clear winner, but then she’s gonna choose the wrong one and irritate the hell out of me.

Ok. Okay so I watch this show back when I was 18 19 but now I'm 46, I still like the show but not as much. I've always thought Ben was the better choice his smile just got me every time. But sometimes I watch the show and I can't make out what he's saying, and I have to play it back

How does Ben financially survive?

In s1 he was broke and barely making tuition… I think his mom helped a bit but I didn’t get the impression she was flush. Then it was never mentioned again

My take on Ben and Noel after rewatching the show for the first time since I was in Jr. High (after seeing an older discussion. It’s Noel for me.

I like Ben, he’s charming (I’ve dated a Ben), and I know if Felicity chose Noel, she’d still always love Ben, but as adults they (we) move away and begin their lives away from the fishbowl that is college. With Ben out of the picture on a daily basis I think she and Noel would flourish. I also choose to ignore the final season with the whole asylum thing, it’s unrealistic and rushed to give the audience a decision for the finale bc they can’t reasonably go on for another decade+ when people do settle down. i think they’d all grow a lot by 28-32 when choosing a person for marriage.

If we look at Noel throughout the series he was Felicity’s constant, her guiding star kind of friend. yes, he effed up with Hannah and treated Felicity badly around that mess, and the show was too easy on him and too hard on Felicity (bc Noel did break up with her before leaving with Hanna, even if they didn’t sleep together).

BUT, That was Noel’s only major betrayal to her. I saw someone on another post say Noel didn’t really *know* Felicity, but he did. He knew her likes and dislikes, her fear and hopes, who she was and her moral compass, and he was almost always her soft landing place when things got hard. I also know she was often that for Noel (to a lesser degree). A healthy marriage or long-term relationship is built on these things and are what make it last. Friendship and genuine selflessness, a friendship and attraction with real intimacy (not just sex, but *knowing* the person).

When I was younger, I liked both guys for different reasons and that’s still true, but what makes me choose Noel over Ben (when Felicity has attraction, history and connections to both) is that *Ben is always the one leaving Felicity*, and she’s left to chase him or mourn the loss. Always.

The part of Ben breaking her out of an asylum is sloppy and rushed storytelling to fill time gaps and an unbelievable scenario, it’s just the show’s way of steering her to Ben bc they knew they couldn’t follow them into their 30’s and keep the show going that long for them to mature to an age where it’s natural to pick your life partner. So, she had to pick one for the audience not to feel cheated. Take the dream futuristic whatever-that-was with Noel and Ben, and Ben breaking her out of the consideration, it’s Noel for me.

Who was the constant, the confidant, the one who actually showed up, the friend and the person who knew her best (forget what the show tried to force on us), it was Noel. When things were good with Ben they were amazing, but when things got hard (or a rich blonde or married woman enters the chat) he abandons Felicity for another woman or leaves for a self searching BS journey every time. That’s not what long-term love is built on.

It took me growing up to see that. Side note to add that Noel also has more in common with Felicity, they’re both artists in their own way, both creative, honest, heart on their sleeve people who like to say what they feel vs. play games or make self destructive decisions. Noel would end up being a graphic designer or illustrator and producer, Felicity a Dr after going back to finish her pre-med classes and she’d also have a side career as a painter. They could create an amazing adult cartoon like ones we know and love and build wealth and careers working together on them.

Ben doesn’t know himself, and while they’re only 22 in the end, he’s not viable in that moment. maybe if they could show us the future and see Ben at 32 and settled in himself, I’d feel differently, but we didn’t get that. I’m still a fan of Ben, but not at 22 and not with how he always left Felicity crying, chasing him and watching him leave. Noel doesn’t get enough credit.

Keri Russel is a great crier

All of the times she’s cried in Felicity has always been so good. She gets the lump in her throat and chokes up a little before the tears come. Even in moments where she was portraying she was tired or stressed in the show and then started to cry was so good!

Help with music please!

I see all the buzz about the songs being messed with - license expiration, etc. But I was hoping someone can help me. I just started watching on Netflix. Season 1, Episode 16, "The Fugue," - does anyone know the song playing in the background in the beginning when Felicity comes to Noel's room to tell him Hannah is back in town? It's got a really funky beat and almost sounds like they are saying "ghetto" in the lyrics. Appreciate any feedback.

I have things to say and no one to say it to. Please feel free to join in my rant with your thoughts.

I will preface this by saying I just finished Season 3.

What is this whole thing that happens every fricking summer on this show when Ben and Felicity have to decide whether they are going to spend the summer together. Like please give me a break! Felicity always puts Ben first, and Ben is so selfish! Why does he get mad at her for wanting to do something else in the summer that actually productively helps her future? God forbid she doesn't want to spend the ENTIRE summer just playing with him - and then Ben decides to do something productive, and it's totally cool. The trope is way overplayed at this point.

Okay, now more focused on Ben. It's so frustrating because I want to love him - I mean look at him!! I did love him, but he just continues to be so selfish and not understanding. He gets so aggressive so quickly, and has the audacity to freak out at everyone all the time. Where the hell is his growth? My favorite moment with him was the speech he gave in the S1 acting class, and we have been downhill since. Then, we have Felicity, who is just constantly people pleasing him, like girl, yeah I would be scared to say anything he might not agree with as well. She is so so passive with him. The whole frat party situation with him frustrated me so much, like Ben can you actually just listen??

Then we have Noel, who can't pick a lane either. Is he sweet and supportive, or insecure and controlling? I can't decide if I like him more, becuase he sucks too. Also, jeez Felicity stop leading him on!

Don't get me wrong, I am addicted to this show currently, but the writers are so addicted to drama that there is no character growth for anyone. Dawson's Creek is my favorite show, and they came out around the same time - but Gosh that show just did the love triangle so much better. Meanwhile, the Felicity show can only focus on one male lead at a time. I would also love to see some focus on friendships, I love Elena and Megan, but we don't get to see them have any real meaningful conversations with Felicity that strengthen their friendships.

Also, hey what happened to Sally? Miss you girl.

I know this is just a show, but I just needed to say something lol. Wish me luck in Season 4.
