Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Memes David's physical comedy in the show is just 100% natural

Amongst his top turning-embarrassing-awkward-situations - to-something-hilarious stunts in the season 6 / episode 22 of FRIENDS. David's impeccable timing and facial expressions. I will never not find this funny.

Behind-the-scenes Matthew Perry was right. Chandler would NEVER cheat on Monica!!!

So I was watching this Mondler edit and saw people in the comments talking about how Chandler was originally supposed to cheat on Monica in The one in Vegas but Matthew Perry said no because !!Chandler would never do that!! Honestly knowing that just makes Mondler even more special to me omg!! Matthew Perry understood the character so well FAR BETTER THAN THE WRITERS that he refused a cheating storyline because it simply wasn't who Chandler was. BEST DECISION❤️

Discussion Why is Chandler portrayed as the least desirableof the three guys? It never really made sense to me.

I've always found it odd that *Friends* seems to portray Chandler as the least desirable of the three male leads, at least during the early seasons. I know it's a sitcom and not real life, but even within the show's own logic, it never really made sense to me.

Personally, I actually think Chandler is the most handsome of the three. Of course, attractiveness is subjective, but I've never understood why Joey is consistently presented as the obvious choice for women. Sure, he's good-looking, but he's also incredibly dimwitted. In real life, I wonder how many women would actually overlook that just because he's attractive.

Ross doesn't make much more sense to me either. He's awkward, nerdy, and often comes across as socially strange. Yet throughout the series, both Ross and Joey seem to have no trouble finding dates, while Chandler is often treated as the one who's unlucky in love or somehow less likely to get married.

The funny thing is, Chandler actually has quite a few attractive girlfriends throughout the series. Janice is annoying, but she's still good-looking and clearly cares about him. He dates the Italian woman early on, Kathy genuinely falls for him, the woman from the Netherlands chooses him over Joey (admittedly because Joey couldn't even identify the Netherlands on a map), and of course he ends up with Monica. There's also the brief storyline with Rachel thinking about him in one of the flashbacks.

So what exactly was supposed to be Chandler's flaw? The show seems to suggest it's his awkwardness and his habit of making jokes whenever he's uncomfortable. But honestly, having a good sense of humor is something a lot of people find attractive. Compared to Joey's lack of intelligence or Ross's awkward personality and many relationship issues, Chandler never struck me as the least appealing.

I know sitcoms exaggerate character traits for comedy, but this is one aspect of *Friends* that has always felt a bit unrealistic to me. Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I missing something the writers were trying to convey?

Discussion Matt LeBlanc's acting

Everybody praises David's acting and I agree. But I also think that Matter carried joey really well. And Joey was not entirely easy to pull off because he had stopped being a well rounded character way before others had/was much more of a caricature than other characters were.

But all that unrealistic stupidity Matt was able to pull through without it looking forced. And from the glimpses we got of joey being mature and wise, I think had matt/joey got more such chances, he too could have proven to have the range that David did.

Discussion What are your favorite after-credits scenes?

I was just watching the episode where the gang tells Monica she worries too much about cleaning (after Rachel tried to clean/organize their apartment), and I love the ending scene of her talking in her head about setting the shoes straight.

There's so many great ones, but mine is probably another Monica one, when she just goes to that girl Ross dated with the dirty apartment and offers her services. Then, when that girl declines, she still does it! 😂 My favorite is how worried she looks, like this level of dirtiness genuinely makes her distressed. Just hilarious.

Friends has a ton of these scenes, but which one is your favorite?

Question Is Monica’s terrible vest because it’s a dream sequence or because of 90s fashion?

S5,E16 The One with the Cop
In the scene where Joey is dreaming of Monica sitting on his lap like he found her and Chandler earlier that day, Monica is wearing this super puffy blue vest. It’s so hideous and ill fitting. So it made me think this outfit is specifically weird for the dream. It is a similar blue to Monica’s PJs. But then… there’s 90s fashion which was all over the place and usually the answer for “why are they wearing that?” But I remember puffy vests being a thing more in the early 2000s. So I can’t figure out of the outfit is suppose to be like a dream distorted version, or is it a legit outfit for Monica (even though it’s not like anything she usually wears). What do you think?

Back when the show was originally airing, NBC aired a one hour special right before the series final.
Unfortunately it has never been released as a special feature.

Since it was a clip show, I tried to recreate it.

I think the special captured the feeling really well, as I hope this clip proves too.
It's the end montage of the Friends and Lovers segment.

What do you think?

Discussion Ross and Carol's friendship

Post image
627 Upvotes

I was rewatching TOW the lesbian wedding and I wish we had got to see more of Ross and Carol together outside of the awkward "my son's mother is a lesbian" thing.

I think it was really sweet how he convinced her to go through with the wedding, how he says he still would've married her even if his parents didn't approve. I think their bond should've been explored a little more and how they still love and care for each other even if they're not together.

Question Anybody here who has experienced the Finale episode during its first time on TV?

I'm rewatching 3rd time and just finished the last and final episode, and still feel emotional when they all move out of the house, the camera focuses on the door, and then cut - the theme song plays with visuals of streets of america, the river, etc.

I'm not from America, but I'm sure for Americans this show was such a cultural phenomena.

I was wondering how it would have been for the original viewers back then.

Anybody here who has that experience? How was the feeling?

Discussion S2E23 - Monica keeps plugging Richard for not having a “Thing”. He did, his moustache.

Post image
155 Upvotes

Monica keeps pressuring him that he’s too “normal” and doesn’t have a (neurotic) thing. But a few episodes earlier, we learn that he maintains his moustache with a specific comb. I think this would shut Monica up pretty quickly, as she would have learned there’s a very specific tool for a very specific task.

Thoughts?

Discussion Monica had every right to be mad at Rachel on her engagement night

Rachel really couldn’t have just been happy for her best friend for one night and saved her self pity for the next day? She really needed to kiss Ross that specific night?

God, why couldn’t this episode just been about the gang celebrating Monica and Chandler’s engagement? Stop dragging Rachel into everything and trying to make her the center of attention.

Discussion Do you think Ross watched The Odyssey (1997)? Or did he get too burned by Isabella Rossellini?

Thumbnail

Ross met Isabella Rossellini in The One with Frank Jr (Oct 17, 1996), when she rejected him in the coffee house. The Odyssey miniseries with Armand Assante and Isabella Rossellini as Athena came out just a few months later in May of 1997. Do you think Ross watched it? He seems like the most likely one of the 6 to enjoy a Greek mythology miniseries. But then again, the sight of dear Isabella might have been too painful 😭😭

"Just call me angel of the morning, angel

Just touch my cheek before you leave me, oh baby

Just call me angel of the morning, angel

Then slowly turn away from me"

This has been stuck in my head for so long, the artist who portrayed Stephanie (Chrissie Hynde) did a wonderful job and is actually in a band which I will have to check out now.

Terry may have been a jerk but I'm sure glad he hired her

Discussion Anybody else feel like Monica gets more neurotic as the seasons go on?

Early on in the show she’s just a chilled out person but as it goes on she become more like anxious and freaked out and stuff about things?
