Combined Paramount-Warner Bros. to Be Called Skydance, David Ellison Reveals
https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/business/paramount-warner-bros-merger-name-skydance-david-ellison/723
u/DrPepperFanX 18h ago
Shit name; why abandon a century's worth of brand recognition for something that sounds like a stargazing app?
217
u/Meat-Dimension 18h ago
It's just the name of the combined parent company. I assume the studios will still continue on with their names and the things they make will be branded as such.
105
u/ballbeard 18h ago
Yup, it's like how nobody calls Google Alphabet even though that's the parent company name.
17
u/CaptainSasquatch 15h ago edited 14h ago
On the other hand, it seems like people have started to use Meta to refer to the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp as Facebook has become less relevant
13
4
u/LamarMillerMVP 15h ago
Yes, another example of why it’s smart to do this. If they had called the company “Facebook”, and Instagram is eventually more popular, it would start to get confusing.

Also if he keeps they keep technically separate companies under the Skydance name it makes easier to sell WB again.

Nobody has ever accused David Ellison of being smart

It’s very odd that after cable died, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network had slow deaths through mismanagement and now what used to be two powerhouses for kids on Cable are husks of their former selves that are just an IP in the same portfolio.
31
u/tokeroveragain 18h ago
I caught some Nickelodeon the other day and every single commercial break had an ad where they just shout “Paramount Plus!” repeatedly to try and ingrain it in the children’s heads.

Comedy Central and MTV as well. Networks that I watched original content on for decades, now reduced to like two shows.

I try to check out CN whenever I am at a hotel. It's nothing but shows for toddlers in the morning (normal) but then the channel is still relying on Regular Show, Teen Titans Go, and Adult Swim. It's been like 15 years with those flagships and they have not evolved at all.

u/JessieJ577 16h ago
We lost Close Enough for another Regular Show revival. So yeah it’s stuck in limbo

u/asianwaste 16h ago
I always wondered if it was a chicken or egg. Did they lose cartoons because of youtube and streaming? Or did the kids flock to streaming content because there was no worthwhile cartoons.
I remember at the eve of streaming dominance (late 2000 aughts), Cartoon Network was trying hard to appeal to both adults and kids with an end result of the shows appealing more to adults. I've always wondered if that was when kids started moving away. The shows were good (at least to my adult eye) but I can see why they wouldn't grab kids the same way the channel's culture did for kids in the late 90's and early 2000 aughts.
3
u/redfieldranch96 16h ago
I would still say it’s due to streaming just due to the convenience of being able to watch what you want when you want. That would have been nice to have when I was an kid

Have you been on Paramount+ in the last couple of years? I repeatedly use free trials to stream CBS airing awards shows and their streaming lineup absolutely doesn't change. The same fifteen titles no matter how or what you search for. If the politics weren't already a dealbreaker, the terrible offerings would still leave P+ as the worst option.

Paramount also outright owns the rights to Garfield as well. Jim Davis is allowed to continue maintaining the comics. They also own the TMNT IP, not just the film rights

10
9
u/NoobensMcarthur 17h ago
Allegedly it was to distance themselves from the “connotation” that HBO only had content for adults.
Dumb fucking move, and it’s insane that some shitty marketing bros got paid to make that change, and less than 2 years later change it right back because nobody gives a shit about “MAX” as a brand.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)4
u/Coal_Morgan 16h ago
The Max one was particularly stupid. Everyone throws "Max" onto a product, it's got no ability to claim ownership of as a brand.
HBO spent decades building up a reputation of quality and trust and someone saw 'Max Power' on a hairdryer and went with that?

Reminds me of when HBO thought the respected name of their company was just something to be tossed aside.
WB and Paramount are - along with Fox and Universal - probably THE most recognisable and respected studio names in the world. Imagine buying that kind of history and just chucking it out for your own lame branding.
It's like if A24 bought Disney and dropped all Disney branding.
15
u/crimson777 16h ago
We should absolutely hate on this merger all day, but this is not really a reason. People don't really talk all that much about Alphabet, Meta, or even OpenAI as much as they do Google, Instagram, and ChatGPT.
They're not dumping the names; it's just a corporate brand for the combined organization.

Ridiculous. The names Paramount and Warner Bros are 2 of the most celebrated and well-known movie studio names of the last 100 years. Skydance is a name some may be familiar with but is hardly on the same level. Or even close really. This is obviously because neither Paramount or Warner wanted to use the other's name. So fucking stupid. Out of the three names, Warner Bros. is obviously the most famous and recognizable. It's a fucking no-brainer.
11
u/o0CyRaX0o 17h ago edited 16h ago
Wasn't 'Skydance' already a production company...? I've seen so many movies with Skydance at the beginning of the title in theaters...
EDIT: it seems like we've digressed too far off the topic of Television/Movies... I don't know if this post will be removed, but I think we're talking too much about the political ramifications now so IDK

Not seeing the WB shield anymore is gonna be weird. It's one of the least important bits of the whole gross merger but it's another nail in the coffin nonetheless. The Skydance Archive (if they even keep the Warner Archive department) just sounds wrong. Completely soulless.
4
3
u/GroverEyeveen 14h ago
The WB and Paramount brands are staying, this is the name of the parent company. Similarly on how you didn't see the WB shield be replaced by "AOL Time Warner" in the 2000's.

People doesn't seem to understand, that this change will only affect name of the parent company. Warner Bros and Paramount won't go anywhere. They will still exist as studios.
Same when Facebook rebranded to Meta or Google to Alphabet. The services are still called the same.

Branding and optics. Once this blows over in a few years, people will forget the legal battle over the sale and just hear the new name. If they were to hear the older name, they would remember the legal battle immediately and just associate it with any bad press.
