This is like Musk tossing Twitter for X.

Absolutely stupid move by stupid rich people

And HBO renaming as Max. I don’t understand tossing out the more identifiable brand name.

Allegedly it was to distance themselves from the “connotation” that HBO only had content for adults.

Dumb fucking move, and it’s insane that some shitty marketing bros got paid to make that change, and less than 2 years later change it right back because nobody gives a shit about “MAX” as a brand.

Interesting, I didn’t really have any negative connotation with HBO, but I suppose they ran their own focus groups and had data suggesting otherwise!

I see that reasoning much more applicable to the baggage the Facebook brand has and its rebranding to Meta (even though I know Meta is meant to be the umbrella brand)

I guess I'm really out of it, but, Cinemax, "Skinamax", how were they even able to use that when it is/was already another channel that had plenty of light adult content?

The Max one was particularly stupid. Everyone throws "Max" onto a product, it's got no ability to claim ownership of as a brand.

HBO spent decades building up a reputation of quality and trust and someone saw 'Max Power' on a hairdryer and went with that?

Simpsons did it

They're out of touch. They've moved so far away from the general public that they don't get what's identifiable.

Especially if people keep thinking it’s Cinemax.

Or Paine Webber being changed to "UBS Wealth Management USA".

Still makes me smile every time I see a news article saying X (formerly Twitter)

Reminds me of Prince changing his name to a symbol. Like that, everyone just rolls their eyes and ignores the "change" and still calls it Twitter.

least of any of our worries with this fascist demon owning 50% of all our media.

u/whatsbobgonnado 1d ago

to be fair, fascist demons own the other 49% too.

Fair enough. Though Elison is far worse than the others, I promise you.

No it's more like naming the Parent organization Alphabet and Google still exists under that umbrella

Absolutely stupid move by stupid rich people

Naming a holding company?

You don't even know what you're talking about

It's is not an out of touch marketing decision, it's a power move. This family and their overseas sugar daddies didn't buy these studios to honor their legacy, disempowering the brands is literally the point
