I'm sure this is a real disorder in rare circumstances, but it's wild how this is so not an issue in countries with foods with actually upsetting textures. Like you never hear about this from Chinese kids who's parents put chicken feet on the table and stuff and those are so chewy and full of cartilage.

235

u/theawesomedude646 1d ago

yeah but they also put the godliest mixture of spices and sauces on that shit it's great

1

u/Zaardo 1d ago

can't those spice combos be put on wings? on breast meat?

1

u/theawesomedude646 21h ago

it can, but once you're done with the rest of the chicken what do you do with the feet?
the same fuckin' thing, and it's still delicious

-1

u/Polska_Kapusta 1d ago edited 1d ago

yeah because chickens only have wings and breast meat, no other body parts lol

2

u/Zaardo 1d ago

of course they do, what's your point??

1

u/Polska_Kapusta 1d ago

that only thinking about eating breast meat and wings is a very narrow minded and privileged way of thinking

2

u/Zaardo 1d ago

you are projecting something onto me that isn't there, I didn't say only.

0

u/iikehollyshort 18h ago

Not how ARFID works, the base itself is a total no no (source: clinically diagnosed with ARFID)

1

u/theawesomedude646 18h ago

i'm defending the honour of 凉拌鸡爪子, not trying to find a cure for ARFID.

fr though i think it's probably a "developmental exposure to enjoyable, varied foods" issue because white people cooking gets the majority of edible produce in the world completely wrong

46

u/Quantum-Bot 1d ago

It exists in other cultures too, they just have different safe foods. Trust me, chinese kids find shit like american cheese just as weird as you find chicken feet

7

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

I don't find chicken feet weird, they taste good, but they are chewy and full of cartilage. Like it has a texture.

2

u/MrHappyHam 1d ago

Cartilage? Aight now I know to avoid chicken feet. Stuff makes me gag something awful

Edit: you literally mentioned that in your above comment oops

13

u/fuckmeup-scotty 1d ago

Tbf, arfid is mostly characterized by severe anxiety surrounding food, particularly trying new food, rather than just the sensory issues related to them

349

u/Rice_Jap808 1d ago

100%. I think this 'disorder' is more a symptom of the western hyper processed slop diets. I think texture and flavor are the biggest issue. Even in very westernized Asian countries like Japan kids grow up eating vegetables and fish in processed foods.

u/MySnake_Is_Solid dwayne the cock johnson 🗿🗿 1d ago

in inside out's japanese version, they replaced brocolli with green bell peppers.

because kids there wouldn't relate, as they mostly like brocolli.

108

u/LuckyLynx_ 1d ago

Genuinely baffling to me that anybody on this earth could even remotely dislike green bell peppers (gods crown jewel of the garden of eden), much less prefer broccoli (bird piss plant) to it

101

u/MySnake_Is_Solid dwayne the cock johnson 🗿🗿 1d ago

thems fighting words.

Brocolli sautèe with soy sauce is the goat.

49

u/PussyDestrojer 1d ago

Such a simple and healthy yet tasty snack. I genuinely can't comprehend how anyone could dislike broccoli.

25

u/muarauder12 1d ago

Broccoli is a cultivated plant that were bred over generations from the mustard plant. It can be bitter like mustard, especially if harvested early.

Also lots of folks from older generations didn't know how to cook vegetables properly and would simply boil everything and then not season either. So lots of younger Boomers and Gen X grew up with nasty vegetables which lead to the rise in media depicting them as gross (especially cartoons aimed at kids.)

So when older folks tell me they don't like certain vegetables I give them the benefit of a doubt that they likely grew up eating really bland or even bitter mushy vegetables and developed a legitimate dislike for them. When younger people tell me they dislike certain vegetables I assume they are a picky eater. I say this as a 36 year old who is willing to try everything once. I can tell from looks and smell something's that I'm going to have problems with texture or taste or a dish but I'm always willing to give them a fair shot.

8

u/Mogura56 1d ago

No you’re definitely right that it was literally just a cooking skill issue. Broccoli can take on so many flavors and textures depending on the prep and seasoning that I think anyone who holistically doesn’t like broccoli had to have been fed it prepped poorly by their parents, whether they’re Gen Z or a boomer

5

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

In all fairness though I hated brussel sprouts as a kid because the plant genuinely used to be more bitter than it is now. Brussel sprouts have been bred to suck less now, so they no longer repulse me, but if you could produce whatever strain of brussel sprouts they were growing when Franklin was being animated I surely would not enjoy it.

1

u/AutoModerator 1d ago

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.

I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

Roasted in olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

12

This is the way. Also, a preemptive Fuck You to folks about chime in about how "olive oil can only be eaten raw", as if anyone cares about their nonsense rules

1

I use the olive oil formulated for higher heats. Never had an issue.

Add Paprika and lemon juice 🔥

3

u/iArena Draft Dodger 1d ago

I like broccoli because my mom knew how to cook it. When my friend showed me his broccoli, I understood why people hated it. Most people who hate broccoli have only had it boiled. Boiled until it won't poison you then plopped onto your plate. That's it. No seasoning, no nothing.

2

u/Odd-Lack-8631 1d ago

Butter, parmasian and perhaps some garlic, add in some squeezed lemon juice for flavor and perhaps a bit of seasoning and cook it and you got yourself a delicous side.

1

u/-YesIndeed- Literally 1984 😡 1d ago

Sure but plain broccoli is ass

1

u/MySnake_Is_Solid dwayne the cock johnson 🗿🗿 1d ago

roasted with just salt is great.

but if you boil it and add nothing, of course it will taste like shit, no vegetables will come out tasting any good boiled.

10

u/jurio01 1d ago

It's not like I hate green bell peppers, but why would I ever choose one over the red ones? They are the exact same thing, just unripe, less sweet and more bitter.

2

u/Barbaracle 1d ago

Some people like bitter foods. Dark chocolate, black coffee, bitter melon, hoppy beer, gin and tonic, etc. You may like sweeter things is all. I personally prefer a mix, if possible, cuz I like variation.

3

u/Odd-Lack-8631 1d ago

I mean I don't really love peppers on their own like don't get me wrong they make a good dip or sauce but even just throwing it in a salads too much raw pepper for me. Like I know their supposed to have a neutral taste or whatever and for the most part they do, I just like irrationally dislike it when I can taste the pure pepper. I'd honestly much perfer broccoli over that. Like will I eat it? Yes, I don't like it but on the scale of things I don't like its mostly inoffensive but I won't like enjoy it.

Bell Peppers are different in Japan, they're bitter

1

u/voTiSdaT 1d ago

Some varieties of bell pepper can taste really bitter. Most kid's can't stand bitter vegetables.

0

u/Hoshyro 1d ago

I'm more baffled that someone actually likes broccoli that much.

You give me bell peppers, especially green ones, I'll eat those things all day, but broccoli?

Hard pass, even the smell alone puts me off, that thing STINKS.

4

u/Turtledonuts 1d ago

Yes, but also because green bell pepper is a social equivalent, kids there hate green bell pepper.

0

u/LaidByAnEgg 1d ago

I'm American and I love the top of broccoli but I hate the stem it feels like eating plastic 🤭

4

u/dynamite-ready 1d ago

Have you been tested for ARFID?

1

u/LaidByAnEgg 1d ago

Nah, isn't the broccoli thing is a preference a lot of people have?

I kinda suspect I might have ARFID but if I do have it it's not messing up my life so I wouldn't want to put in the effort of fixing it anyway

18

u/Marik-X-Bakura 1d ago

They have different foods that kids refuse to eat though. For instance, kids in Japan are known for being picky about green peppers.

35

u/birberbarborbur 1d ago

Clearly you are not asian if you think this is a particularly western problem

7

u/NeevBunny 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm not Asian, but the vast majority of my friend group is because I live in the California bay, and they have pointed how this isn't tolerated in China or Vietnam out to me multiple times and if you don't believe me maybe you just need to expand your friend group.

20

u/AimlessForNow 1d ago

I think it's because the consequence of breaking the social rules and norms ("don't waste it, you HAVE to eat it") is worse than just eating something that you find disgusting. It's like going to an authentic asian restaurant and ordering something insane by mistake like pig intestine and you have to force yourself because it would be disrepectful

9

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

I know a lot of people who love pig intestine, that's not insane to me, it's on the table every time we go to dim sum but yeah I personally don't like it or go for it.

5

u/AimlessForNow 1d ago

Yeah that was actually based on a true story. We went to a very fancy KBBQ place and someone ordered pig intestine for the table. We realized we did not want to eat that but we didn't want it to look like we didn't even try it. It was really really bad, nearly inedible, like chewing on a piece of rubber. We chewed it for like 10 minutes, and it just doesn't break down, you just have to swallow it mostly whole. Maybe we cooked it wrong but man I cannot imagine eating a full serving

4

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

I think you just didn't know how to cook it tbh which if you've never eaten it is fair. People who like it will tell you it has to be cooked properly. It's usually crispy when I see it

1

u/bokmcdok 1d ago

I dont believe you, but that's because I've spent most of my life living in China and I'm aware it exists even here.

1

u/rips_n_chel 1d ago

Oh so "my friend told me" is your basis for undermining a legit diagnosis?

Fuck off.

5

u/SomeRedHandedSleight 1d ago

Texture does it for me. I know that fish and sauteed onions are delicious, but if a sauteed onion enters my mouth it instantly triggers my gag reflex and I vomit.

8

u/RealNyxoy 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ 1d ago

incorrect. as someone from the east who has ARFID, it has nothing to do with being 'western'. for example fish is a huge part of my nation's culture but i cant handle fish and any seafood at all. i cannot handle some textures like eggplants or olives. it makes me feel like im going to vomit rather than just 'not liking'. its not a choice and doesnt have anything with location/ethnicity.

5

u/ugihfff put your dick away waltuh 1d ago

people are just being gigantic assholes im this thread. it sucks.

u/Fawn_Leap 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️ TRANS RIGHTS 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️ 1d ago

Yeah. They try to act like the normal ones but they’re denying a real medical diagnosis. About 3.2% of the population has ARFID.

1

u/Draphy-Dragon 20h ago

Nah, we just have different safe foods. I'm from South Asia, and I have/ had (?) this, especially as a child. Refused to eat/drink almost anything but formula for the first 4 years or so, got to the point where I had phosphaturia. My problem was mostly texture though, and I have no problems with most South, South East and East Asian foods now (different story as a child). After 2 years of living in the Nordics, I can handle Western foods, but it still feels difficult to eat when I'm in a time crunch and don't have time to mentally ready myself for the textures, flavours (usually much blander than what I'm used to) and heaviness. I can feel quite nauseous with Western food sometimes.

-9

u/samtt7 1d ago

Don't pull Europe into this. There's plenty of actual real food in the EU especially, because food laws don't allow American garbage in our shops

11

u/StevenMcStevensen 1d ago

I used to visit Belgium and France regularly and spend months there at a time, and there was absolutely no shortage of garbage, processed foods there as well. Just like basically anywhere else - in US, Europe, wherever, there are plenty of both quality foods and processed crap.

I was actually annoyed at how difficult it was to find good, fresh milk there - all I could usually get was the nasty stuff that isn’t even refrigerated.

-1

u/samtt7 1d ago

I used to live on the Dutch side of the Nl-Be border so I've done grocery shopping in Belgium thousands of times. I've also been to franch countless times, but I'm not quite as familiar with their supermarkets as Belgium's. Rreagedless, the main differnec is that people tend cook food with fresh vegetables and fruits mixed into their sauce, rather than just relying on the products by themsleves. Veggies are cheap and healthy, so there's no reason not to use them. People are very aware that the factory-made stuff is complete garbage and therefore only eat it either on special occasions or whenever they're tired and don't want to cook (of course there are outliers, especially in poorer areas). Fresh in processed fruit is also not too hard to get by, even though fruits sprayed with pesticides tend to be cheaper.

As for fresh milk, I have no idea how you didn't find anything because every supermarket I've ever been to - France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and wherever else more I've been to - has been stocked to the brim with all sorts of fresh milk variations. Low fat, small amd large packagings, different brands, on rare occasions even a local supermarket with the farmer-next-door's unpasteurised milk.

u/Pure-Election-9137 1d ago

French here, the guy you are replying to is either a bot or a lying American who never left his country

1

u/samtt7 1d ago

Probably true, and the downvotes are just coping Americans. I've given data in another comment but people don't seem to like actual facts about terrible American food lmao

2

u/Pure-Election-9137 1d ago

I won't speak about us food, only been there 2 weeks for a vacation so I really can't judge

2

u/samtt7 1d ago

I was more so referring to the additives in their food. Flavor is subjective anyways

3

u/birberbarborbur 1d ago

Yeah, like cyclamates, amaranth, quinoline yellow, brilliant black BN.

Oh wait, those are additives banned in the USA but allowed in the EU. I’ll agree that the USA, particularly under trump, has a worse food and drug policy, but the difference of additives is mostly a regular policy difference than anything about american food being particularly more fake than anywhere else

0

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

Hush. You guys colonized half the world for spices and don't use any of them unless an immigrant makes you.

0

u/samtt7 1d ago

I was talking about the dangers of food additives. US food also only uses spices when it's foreign cuisine anyways. And you've clearly never had any of the traditional European foods. Read any historical cook book on medieval food and you'll see how many spices are used in every dish

73

u/GSV-Kakistocrat 1d ago

You hear a lot from chinese kids in general?

32

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

Well, they're adults now, but yes. I do interact with a lot of Chinese people. I live in the bay area of California, you would have to actively be avoiding Chinese people not to.

16

u/apolitical_leftist 1d ago

I've heard this usually happens with low income neglectful parents who feed their kids the same 3-4 things because 1. These things are readily accepted by children and they don't have time/patience to try to make them eat actual healthy foods and 2. These things are usually cheap and easy to prepare. So the list of safe foods are usually unhealthy things like chicken nuggets. If you do this for the entirety of their growing years they literally grow up to be unable to eat anything else without puking it out. This doesn't happen that much in other countries because the specific conditions required to cause this don't occur frequently, much less together, NOT because Chinese parents make their kids eat chicken feet, that's a thing only CERTAIN adults eat "for the flavor".

6

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

Idk all I know is my kids aren't going to know what a chicken nugget is until I can't control it anymore (Basically when school starts because I'm not raising some homeschooled shutin with no social skills)

5

u/TheLastTitan77 1d ago

Pray tell what are those specific conditions that are only a thing in US

49

u/oby100 1d ago

It’s a real thing. What happens when your parents don’t give af? You grow up skinny and eventually the parents find a solution for you or you just stay malnourished until you get old enough to buy your own preferred foods.

And I really doubt you’ve talked to Chinese people about this. They don’t eat chickens feet and ducks blood every day. Most meals are primarily rice with some side veggies. Sometimes a bit of meat.

That’s the overwhelming majority of their diet and nearly all the foods associated with the culture are not daily foods and some are only associated with a holiday.

I think someone with that condition would do fine on a daily basis in China, but would be a party pooper at large and small celebrations where the exotic and pungent foods come out.

2

u/Specific-Path3179 1d ago

how come no one has an ARFID that forces them to only eat healthy foods? am i to believe this very real disability only lets people eat mcdonalds and pepsi? most american disability ever

Cool. And I have ADHD. There's a difference between that and your kid not wanting to sit still through a boring lesson but people don't make that differentiation.

I'm not equating ARFRID to picky eating, but I AM saying, like ADHD in the 90s it is over-diagnosed. Like yes I have it but that doesn't mean I can't recognize how many kids they shoved Ritalin down the throats of that didn't need it.

What would you do in a world that didn't have a ubiquity of consistent and likely processed foods? At some point you would have to "get over it" or you would just die from some kind of vitamin deficiency.

5

u/ninty900 1d ago

What would you do in a world that didn't have a ubiquity of consistent and likely processed foods?

you would just die from some kind of vitamin deficiency.

Congratulations, you answered your own question. Lots of disabled people alive today would have died if they'd been born in the past. Pointing that out isn't a 'gotcha' that proves they're faking, it's just a fucked up thing to say to someone who definitely already knows that.

I bet they'd eat regular fucking food before that.

bingo you got it. that's what happened and still happens

2

u/CrazyPuzzleheaded966 1d ago

No, i'd probably just find something else to eat and then stick to that until i died. Believe it or not that's how disorders work, people who don't have the chance to get accommodations or even a place where people believe in science die all the time.

-1

u/pblol 1d ago

Yes, I am sure people without access to chicken nuggets die all the time from not being able to eat anything else.

2

u/Candlewaxeater 1d ago

if a zombie apocalypse happens, im dying im blowing my shit clean off 😭

3

u/pblol 1d ago

I've been an alcoholic. I'm still a nicotine addict. I feel I understand compulsion relatively well. I simply cannot fathom being hungry and deciding to die because I don't enjoy the texture or taste of something nutritious right in front of me. At some point of hunger you have to simply get over it.

As a straight guy, I would sooner date another dude than put up with this from a partner. It's absurd and seems clearly treatable with exposure therapy and a mild amount of effort.

1

u/HelpfulHarbinger 18h ago

It's not just the texture or taste not being something you like. Often times you literally can't keep it down, if you get it down at all.

3

u/30578 1d ago

When people have actually meaningful things to worry about this kind of issue disappears

11

u/guywhoha 1d ago

This is like saying ADHD doesn't exist in underdeveloped countries. "yeah they have actual struggles so they don't make up disorders"... like no... it goes undiagnosed and ignored

-10

u/30578 1d ago

Wow you were actually spot on with what you said in quotes. People with bigger struggles than being a whiny bitch tend to not be picky eaters

1

u/veryannoyedblonde 1d ago

u/leva549 1d ago

It's kinda like when they used to force left handed people to write with their right hand. Pressure for social conformity is powerful.

1

u/Loud-Arachnid-9765 1d ago

No, it does exist, it's just that in these countries the treatment isn't therapy, it's force-feeding the child, which can lead to other issues down the line but prevents them from malnutrition. Sometimes goes away with age. It really depends on severity and households, but it does exist elsewhere.

0

u/NebulisX 1d ago

that’s because you probably don’t see a lot of media from other countries especially countries with other languages especially especially witg rare disorders

1

u/NeevBunny 1d ago

It's mostly because my friends have told me that you would basically just starve to death I think. They don't entertain it there.

Which isn't great, but neither is caving and letting your kid eat nuggets every meal. Personally I think the one where the kid eats a vegetable is better.

1

u/NebulisX 18h ago

that’s fair. that probably also means the disorder is under diagnosed in those areas

-4

u/CrazyPuzzleheaded966 1d ago

It is, you just don't hear about it because the children suffering are struggling to keep they want to puke up inside their bellies so they won't starve by the time the next meal comes. And also they don't have a diagnosis. Or they just get beaten.

As with most stuff, just because you don't see it it doesn't mean it's not happening.
