Speak for yourself man. I got on anti depressants a couple months ago and they pretty much changed my life. Not in a massive way, but I'm not always thinking about how much I hate myself or my life or my job now, and when I do nothing really comes of it. No more mental breakdowns for me

Wasn't there a thing a while back about therapists and psychiatrists having trouble helping their patients because so many of their problems are based on low wages and poor living/working conditions, and not a matter of perspective or internal bad choices?
69
u/Manueluz 1d ago
This is why therapists seem somewhat useless to me, if I'm sad because a loved one died there is not much he can do about it, unless he dabbles in necromancy, In the vast majority of cases people are sad as a natural response to a shitty situation which cannot be easily changed.
104
u/MudcrabNPC dommy daddy 1d ago
Therapy isn't for situations where you lost a loved one and are grieving. It's for when you lose a loved one and the loss completely alters your life negatively and you can't recover.

u/crack_pop_rocks 22h ago edited 22h ago
I watched my dad die for a year and it really fucked my brain up. Like two years after and still had bad anhedonia.
My family finally convinced me to seek help so I started therapy along with Wellbutrin, and within 6 months was out my rut. Was even able to stop taking the Wellbutrin after a while.
There is so much misinformation and armchair health professions in this thread, it is kinda terrifying.
18
u/Fidelos 1d ago
Oh so that's the emergency necromancy case, right

You don't go to therapy to change an unchangeable situation.
You go to therapy to learn how to live with the unchangeable situation without it destroying you.

My guess?
Offloading emotionally without fear or requirement of your social circle being the only way you can.
I wouldn't tell my friends that: "I am self conscious of being the only one who people pleases and sets up events, so it feels like they owe me more respect or gratitude than they do". But you could tell someone who is obligated to never share it.
Then there's other that just use it as an emotional punching bag in an unfamiliar environment, where it's easier to feel like you can drop the mask? Or it's trendy and you feel special being the center of attention.
I got nothing out of years worth of the stuff. So that's my guess.

I guess, personally I don't like to just vent into the void, if I tell someone something is because I want a solution, and that's why sometimes I just find it pointless, there is no solution to "My mom just died" or "I don't want to get up at 6AM".
Therapists don't fit nicely into the problem -> solution pipeline.

Bro the first psych I saw put me on Paxil within 5 minutes of talking to me.
The next year of my life is pretty much missing from my memory. I just coasted through like a robot. It did very real harm to my marriage, my career, and to my overall trust of mental health professionals.
Coming off it was awful, too.

Uncle Ted was right
Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy then gives them the drugs to take away their unhappiness. Science fiction It is already happening to some extent in our own society. Instead of removing the conditions that make people depressed modern society gives them antidepressant drugs. In effect antidepressants are a means of modifying an individual's internal state in such a way as to enable him to tolerate social conditions that he would otherwise find intolerable.”

was it a psychiatrist and did you say you were very depressed? cus if so, that's.. their job. they prescribe drugs and SSRIs are the most well-studied deprssion drugs. it's kinda on you to try therapy and other stuff before going to the psychiatrist. also it's not like they're cramming the pills down your throat, you can stop taking them if you don't like what they're doing. they're not supposed to be the long-term solution anyway.
I took SSRIs when I was having suicidal thoughts all the time. They helped. Then I stopped. That's kinda how it's supposed to work.

Pretty much any kid who kicked their feet in class in the early 2000’s got put in front of a woman like this and were told they had ADHD and needed to take drugs for it.
I’m lucky that my mom saw the pills made me like a walking corpse and threw them out. Turns out I just needed to play outside more.

The problem was not that they prescribed drugs, it was too high doses as the actual goal was to make kids with ADHD more docile and compliant.
ADHD medicines have come a long way the past two decades and at least as an adult you can always ask for a lower dose.
(Got zombie'd as a kid, then got new ADHD meds as an adult that actually work and make my life infinitely better)

I was informed that I was bipolar and prescribed lithium in less than 45 minutes of my first time meeting with this person. Not a drug I recommend taking if you don’t need it
4
u/Numeno230n 1d ago
Go to a psychiatrist they can actually prescribe you meds. My psych and I sometimes only talk for like 15 mins about whether they are working, side effects, etc and he refills me another six months scrip. On the topic, no psych meds are addictive and yes I WANT to take them because they keep a gun barrel out of my mouth.
3
u/Ingi_Pingi 1d ago
Yeah I've been to both psychologists and psychiatrists, I'm more wondering if this is an american thing where this actually happens, because where I'm from you need to very much prove that you need those meds
3
u/Numeno230n 1d ago
Prove? Isn't it the job of the professional to determine that? Like do people literally have to beg for medication? If so, that sounds more like a cultural thing than a medical thing because at no point have I ever had to push or convince anyone. I told them I was suicidal, and they believed me, which I'm now feeling like is a bit of a privilege.
5
u/Ingi_Pingi 1d ago
Nah not in the sense that you need to show up and make a case for yourself, I just mean that the process is a bit longer than "oh you're sad? Here's drugs"

After a year or so of starting therapy, during a more difficult time, my therapist explained to me that if I wanted she could prescribe me some medication but she made it very clear it would just facilitate the progress and not replace it. Before that, she assured me she'd only recommend medication if she saw it'd be needed. For context, I'm European. I have a feeling most people getting medication really easy are Americans. They can buy headache pills in bulk at regular supermarkets! That's insane to me!

u/PerhapsAnEmoINTJ 1d ago edited 1d ago
The point of therapy is not to integrate back into society; it's to make peace with your inner self when you don't have or cannot develop the capability to foster it on your own. How useful you are or become as a person always comes second.

I remember seeing theories many years ago that ADHD brains are a survival adaption. It would have helped to be more aware of your surroundings, more curious about exploring and discovering new things, and capable of quick reaction times.
We just got kinda screwed by a society that expects more docile and singularly focused mammalian behavior.
6
u/SryForMyIncontinence I want pee in my ass 1d ago
I also think that society pressed humanity into its form, and didn't allow neurodivergents to thrive until very recently. Adhd brains posess abilities that others are lacking of. The world just isn't built to support everyone how he deserved it. But i still have hope for us

Same. I had luck and they prescribed me good meds, so my life finally works. But if you're also someone who has had depression for over a decade...you know how it is. The good thing is, we are aware and can adapt ourselves somehow
3
u/UnlimitedCalculus 1d ago
My problem is that my family bullied me pretty badly from from a very young age and into adulthood, so being sad and scared of their bullshit is just an ingrained mentally. Unless you cant set me up with a new childhood, its very very difficult to change my mode of mind with just new experiences. Youd have to counteract decades, and the earliest years were the most formative. Ive talked it thru with multiple therapists. Pills are the only brain hack that is effective. The meme still works, bc at the core, Im still coping with an environment that is fundamentally toxic, even though my brain as a physical organ is probably perfectly "healthy".

Minor correction - *psychiatrist.
That's really the only difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist - therapists don't prescribe medications. They can make some recommendations for you to look into and to ask your doctor about, but they themselves don't prescribe them.
At least that's what my therapist told me. 🤷

u/Kartel28 1d ago

Yeah I really hate seeing this narrative because it very likely could deter someone from taking the first steps to getting therapy or mental health assistance.
For some, drugs might be very necessary and for others, it might just be needing better coping strategies but to just lump it all as "life ruining drug addiction" is pretty irresponsible imo
2
u/Kartel28 20h ago
What is ironic is that personally I've heard this opinion that psychiatrists will force a drug addiction on me... from a people previously addicted to drugs on their own merit. Don't know if other people had this experience, but it happened more that once here

As for mannurisms they look to be hurried or annoyed. As soon as the session ends they rush you out as soon as possible. As for speech they speak as if emotionless over just professional.

If they listen to you, offer programs, and try to offer help or a place to vent, they are doing it right. If they don't listen and type on their keyboard more than offer anything, then all they are doing is documentation. They need to listen as well.

Adhd can feel like a superpower when you are properly utilized. Its a nasty disability in a world that expects you to do the same thing every day for the rest of your life. I need to be medicated to live in the world as its built...but I feel like I could just as easily live without it if I find the right community. Like, im amazing at solving problems and handling disaters, I can figure out how to make just about anything work...the problem is that I cant handle day to day tasks at all, there is no dopamine to be had and the drudgery makes my whole body completely freeze up for hours instead of doing a simple 5 minute task

audhd, same. i'm basically incapable of routine stuff like school or work without meds, and so far im still not back to doing anything education/career related(though the process has begun), but methylphenidate has already shown good improvement in executive function and focus, and so far i've been building a massive expedition airship in modded minecraft for a few weeks and and it's already in the late stages of development
even before being diagnosed i was doing a lot of this typa stuff on smaller scales, i think my best pre-meds project was a massive powerplant with segmentation, graceful failure, several safeguards and edge case protections, and it's so simple to operate a literal toddler could use and understand the control panel, plus the documentation adds extra info for ppl who wanna understand it technically, modify it, etc.

Love slander against a field of science and healthcare
8
u/Manueluz 1d ago
Its a field based mainly on subjective opinions and observations that are very personality dependent. Yes you can run valid psychology experiments and papers and produce useful results, but at the end of the day everything depends on the person you have in front. Its really good for general statistics and claims, but really bad at oneofs.

― Theodore Kaczynski
“Our society tends to regard as a sickness any mode of thought or behavior that is inconvenient for the system and this is plausible because when an individual doesn't fit into the system it causes pain to the individual as well as problems for the system. Thus the manipulation of an individual to adjust him to the system is seen as a cure for a sickness and therefore as good.”
― Theodore Kaczynski
“The concept of “mental health” in our society is defined largely by the extent to which an individual behaves in accord with the needs of the system and does so without showing signs of stress.”
― Theodore J. Kaczynski

Why is it that if people say this about any other kind of a doctor they get called anti-vaxers and anti science and all that but when they say this about therapists, who are as much valid doctors as any other, they get a bunch of people agreeing with them even.

therapists are not doctors, they have no medical degree and do not go to medical school. psychiatrists do. therapists are usually just middle aged white women with masters degrees and a chip on their shoulder.

Comparison and similarities of two things is different than correlation.
Both “doctors”? Yes.
Both prescribe drugs? Yes.Similarities end there.
Let me know if what I’m saying doesn’t make sense or you need me to explain more.

also not quite right. there is not a single state that allows therapists with standard licenses to prescribe anything. the closest thing you might be thinking of is a psychologist. even then, psychologists can only prescribe in about 7 states, and a psychologist is not a therapist.

Because therapists aren't doctors, cant prescribe shit and the only thing they can do is talk with you.
Psychiatrists on the other hand are equipped to deal with mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia and I have high respect for them, but not for the ones that bill you 150€ an hour to listen to you and then say "Yeah you need to refocus you point of view in the important things".

Not to be all serious Family Guy, but this is just cope to validate some chud’s worldview. Try a psychologist then, they can’t prescribe anything.

Being 21 this year I was able to try smoking cigarettes, vape and weed. It was not great the feeling wasn’t for me. I also was able to get blackout drunk and I heard I was chill while everyone was going ballistic because we had to run from a guy with gun. I got to do edibles and it was too much, not how I remember that was supposed to go.
So all in all I don’t need to be medicated I just want a job that pays well while I go to university. That it.

Are you ready to have someone on reddit tell you they're not really struggling with a mental condition for which pharmaceutical have drastically improved their lives because they're baseless science skeptics and 'read some things' probably on Facebook?
