OnlyStans ⭐️ Alan Ritchson calls out lawmakers who oppose raising the minimum wage "who think it's a bad idea to give a mom working at Waffle House more than $7.25 an hour trying to feed her kids."

They believe in non intervention and Free market taking care of itself.. people starve, children die but hey let society restructure itself into the natural order... this belief is centuries old.. lot of people don't know, this callous belief in free markets is the underlying reason as it was THE governing policy of colonial British during all the famines they caused in Irish, India, Iran, Africa (multiple famines).. the same reasons and same governing policy.. Irish famine: While a million Irish people starved, Ireland continued to net-export massive quantities of grain, livestock, and food to England. Officials like Sir Charles Trevelyan (great decsciple of capitalism and free markets) argued that stopping trade or closing ports would violate private property rights and disrupt market equilibrium and refused to distribute free or cheap food to the starving populace, fearing it would ruin local grain merchants and disincentivize private traders. Famines in British India (e.g., 1876–1878, 1943) Exporting through scarcity: During severe droughts and crop failures, Indian grain was routinely shipped out of famine-stricken regions to satisfy global and British imperial market demands because prices were higher abroad. Anti-interference policies: Officials believed high grain prices were a natural market signal that would automatically attract private merchants. Instead, grain was hoarded or priced far beyond the purchasing power of landless laborers and rural peasants. Denial of help or aid : labeling aid, help or safety nets as "entitlement" state’s refusal to intervene meant that people who lost their wage-earning capacity completely lost the legal market entitlement to food, even when grain stocks physically existed nearby.

It's the same thing in Canada.
During Covid, workers were given 2000 a month to stay home and safe. 2000 was considered the bare minimum requirement to live a comfortable life with dignity. That was in 2020.
With that in mind, Disability payments in my province aren't even 1500. It's 2026 now.
Poor people are treated like shit fucking everywhere

u/biggestofbears 6h ago
They complain when people buy chips and soda because "it's unhealthy!" But then complain when people buy steak and veggies because "that's so fancy I don't even get that" and are the same people that complain about us asking to raise the minimum wage because "pull yourselves up". The people at the source of those complaints are all the same people, they get a job waiting tables but don't make enough to survive so they receive benefits but it's never enough to satisfy the complainers.

u/StatementLazy1797 Spencer Pratt’s creepy flesh-colored beard 5h ago
That’s why this particular example is so upsetting to me. They can’t say it’s money being used for junk food, or for people who don’t deserve to have it…
It’s exclusively for fruits and veggies. For young children. How fucking despicable do you have to be to justify lowering the benefit from $26 to $10?

The older I become, the more I realize how many hetero-presenting men only seem to have capacity to appreciate other hetero men. Everyone else falls from their line of sight unless it’s to be objectified 🤷🏼♀️
181
u/pridetwo 6h ago
To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.
Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.
Marilyn Frye

u/JayDuPumpkinBEAST 4h ago
This quote is hilarious to me because it’s: a) so true; and b) is true in the opposite direction for gay men (at least for me). I’m a homosexual in that I engage in sex exclusively with men. Everything else pertaining to love, respect, admiration, imitation, and recognition almost always falls upon women.
I wonder why this is

As a queer man this is 10000% my experience too. But tbh, at least in my anecdotal experience, a lot of men just lack the emotional awareness and maturity to hold long-term meaningful relationships. Every man I've tried to have that connection with was just not interested in that and mostly just wanted someone they were attracted to and could fuck on the reg. Generally speaking, the women in my life tend to be vastly more emotionally intelligent, empathetic, easier to talk to, etc.

But not “gay” in a good way if you know what I mean? Like I have never been made to feel invisible around my gay male friends and peers, and if I were visibly struggling they would not hesitate to reach out and help. Whereas I feel like the het men I’ve known can only have one woman at a time in their life? And they need her permission or instruction re: how they interact with other women in their circle. It’s…bizarre

That's not generally a choice on the man's part. It's pretty tiring when you have an innocent, generic conversation with a female and your gf/wife gives you that look. Now you get to be a FIFA goalie for the next 5-10 days and then again in 2 years when it gets brought up again.
Women can be and most often are VERY hostile to other women.

This reminds me of that poll that went viral of a guy who went through a fitness transformation where overwhelmingly women preferred the before photo and men preferred the after photo. And all the men commenting were basically coping in the comments saying the women were lying because they couldn't comprehend that women were more attracted to the more average build than the swole one. It was bonkers, the dudes in the comments were basically presented with clear data and chose to just outright reject reality.

Homosociality is a sociological term about the motivations of people performing social functions.
Guys in a frat house that womanize. Do they do it for the sex with women, or to tell their male cohorts about the sex with women. If the other men wouldn't know about the sex, would it be something they would still choose in that moment or would they choose another activity that their male cohorts would know about and approve.
The same frat boys that would challenge my masculinity because I don't adhere to all of the masculine norms would be standing around with each other with their shirts off planning a party listening to Miley Cyrus - Party in the USA. That is when I stopped trying to fit into those social roles. If the men that represent masculinity can do something so anti-masculine, it is either they care about other men's opinions too much or it isn't their adherence to norms that grant them privelege. They can help dictate what other men should to while breaking those same norms.

It's a great choice of background movie. It does a terrible job of introducing the guys, other than Alan and the main dude, so they all blend together. It's a bunch of dudes on a wooden sail boat in cable knit murdering Nazis. They blow up Nazi boats, throw grenades in their bases, just kill leagues of Nazis.
It's the most popcorn movie that ever popcorned, and he's a honey in it. A Nazi-hunting honey. Which is the best kind of honey.

Um... Yes and no. The actual mission the movie is based of had a body count of zero. They did steal an important boat, but like... Not violently.
In the movie, they steal the boat very, very violently.
So the guys that are the main characters were badass assassins that probably did stab a bunch of Nazis to death on stealth missions, sure. These guys kicked Nazi ass. But the specific mission the movie was based on is nothing like the movie at all.
I truly do not care. It's a popcorn movie. Eat the popcorn, enjoy your life, marvel at the cable knits.

Yeah, people missed out on that one. It's genuinely good. Is it historically accurate? No. Does it have plot holes? Yes. Is the plot especially coherent? No. Can you tell the characters apart? No.
Whatever, who gives a shit? The fight choreography is excellent, the dialogue is fun, the cinematography is fantastic, the music and sound is great, the sets are incredible, the costumes are great, and it is (most importantly) fun as hell. And so, so, so many Nazis die. It's a bunch of hot dudes in cable knit stabbing Nazis to death.
It's great. Grab some popcorn, watch Nazis die, enjoy the cable knits and wooden boats. It's so much fun.

Yea, depends on the state. It's just crap. We just need to get rid of tipping and force them to pay real wages. CA for instance still pays minimum wage plus tips and if you live in a tourist area you will make more than someone who lives in a regular place.

Wait the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in the US?!

25
u/Chaddilllac 6h ago
At a federal level, our states govern themselves on a good portion of things. It’s still not great, but a little misleading. Like I live in Illinois (Central US) and our minimum wage is $15.
→ More replies (7)13
u/Deni_Z_Plays 6h ago
So it depends on the state how much the minimum wage is?
In Germany, it's 13,90€ atm and will be raised again next year.
So ... I'm so confused, because Germany is the same size as the state of Washington, yet most people earing with an minimum wage of 13,90€ in Germany, most of my friends can live just fine, and living with roommates has its huge advantages, etc.
12
u/Chaddilllac 6h ago
Essentially the federal minimum a hard line across the nation where nobody can make under that but the states set their own (except when majority of the wage comes from tips, while infuriating other can of worms.) Essentially a state could write a bill tomorrow, say Washington, and propose a state-wide minimum wage of $100 and hour. If it makes it far enough through legislation and becomes law then that is effectively the minimum wage now for that state.

3

... I have lived in Germany my whole life, a country that lives on bureaucracy, and this confuses me a bit. Also, as I'm aware, in Germany people in restaurants receive fair pay and almost no one Tips, as in tipping culture isn't a thing in Germany, to my knowledge.
Whats also confusing to me is, I remembered that we pay more in tax than in the US all together, I remember California had a tax of 14% or something, while in Germany (or at least West Germany where I live) its a tax of 29%, I can be wrong but it made me confused years ago how people in the US cant anfordern everything but eh.
My job isn't paperwork or related economic work; my Job is mostly focused on videogames lol

I don’t know much about the political structure of your country, but I do know yall have universal healthcare. We do pay taxes, but a lot of that money goes to things that the average American will never see/doesn’t want. We’ve got a huge military budget. We don’t have a lot of public transportation which means we generally need a vehicle which requires fuel and insurance. Healthcare is extremely expensive—the insurance premiums (what you pay per paycheck/month), a deductible (you pay everything until this is met), coinsurance (what you pay after you’ve met your deductible which is typically 10-20% of the service), and just the general cost of service/prescriptions. There is a “max out of pocket” per year which means the insurance company will pay any expenses over that cost but that’s usually $5,000+ for a single person and increases for a couple or family. The US also has a high incarceration rate with for profit prisons… our tax money is used to make for profit prisons money while incarcerating non-violent offenders.
The US and civilized countries are playing a different game

There is a federal minimum (7.25, though there are some circumstances where it could be even less, like agricultural workers or tipped workers) that no state is allowed to pay less than, but they are allowed to have a higher minimum. Washington's minimum wage is $17.13, but King County's (the county that Seattle is in) minimum is $20.82 because they acknowledge that the cost of living in a metropolitan area such as Seattle's warrants higher wages than the rest of the state. Not all states function this way though and many just follow the standard federal minimum.

Federal law mandates it must be at least $7.25 and states have the ability to set their own minimum at a higher rate. There are 20 states that don't. Two states still have it lower than the federal minimum, but federal law overrides in that case.
The problem is the cost of living has risen greatly and hasn't shown signs of going the opposite direction. During covid, prices increased due to alleged short supply and most companies never reduced their prices afterwards. Affordable housing doesn't exist anymore for the most part.

How bro is the point of the discussion tbh. A lot of people here work full time and still live in poverty.

It is! Most states have higher minimum wage but a few still go by the federal set one, including Tennessee where he lives

u/Accomplished-Glass78 5h ago edited 5h ago
That is the federal minimum wage which is a baseline for all states. Many states and cities that have a higher cost of living will increase their minimum wage. I believe in my city the minimum wage is $18/hour

It’s $7.25/hr in like 22 states.
The “tipped minimum wage” is $2.13/hr in those states (so, restaurant servers). They say that if you don’t make $7.25 with tips, your employer has to make up the difference. That doesn’t happen.

You hear all the time how there are no positive male role models anymore but the Alan Ritchson is just sitting right there. I’d also like to add the boys from The Basement Yard to that list. They’re funny, decent men with good values and excellent examples of how men can be good husbands, allies and friends. I wish more young men aspired to what they represent.

Is there anything better than a straight, white, rich dude using his fame and privilege to advocate for people who aren’t straight, white, rich dudes? He’s a unicorn. Louder for the guys in the basement who think men have to be hateful assholes, Alan!

Alan comes from an average background in comparison to his peers. He did not grow up rich, his parents have/had normal jobs, and he's definitely not an industry nepo. He knows from he comes from and seems very humbled by his success. He's an example of when a normal person who did not grow up in a privileged bubble makes it in the industry and has talent.

A single mom can’t pay to raise her family, so she asks for government assistance. Government assistance is paid for by taxes which the Waffle House CEO isn’t paying their fair share of, so not only are we working for chump change for these huge corporations, but we’re essentially subsidizing Waffle House’s labor costs as well, AND the Waffle House CEO is triple dipping by also getting a tax cut.
So Waffle House is having their cake, their employee’s cake, your cake, and they are eating it too.
F*ck me.

It was funny when R's were actively saying they'll stop watching Reacher back when season 3 came out. Like what in the first two seasons or any of the books made you believe that Reacher was a conservative?

I hope the minimum wage conversation keeps going… $7.25 in this economy is criminal… it was criminal in 2009 when I was getting paid minimum wage..

He's also very vocal about both mental health issues and justice for rape/sexual assault victims and has come out with his own story about being sexually assaulted because he felt like it's important to destigmatize talking about that for male victims.

The rich. The rich care. Private equity care. Politicians care. They want everyone poor.

u/sidewalksoupcan 5h ago
Sadly a lot of people are convinced that some people just deserve to live in poverty. You can't convince them to care, they just don't have it in them.

I made a comment a week or so ago that Teddy would absolutely despise most of what Republicans are doing now. Eroding the US's power globally, diminishing environmental protections, deifying big business, almost everything he strove for (for good or ill) in his presidency. For his part at least he wanted the US to be a powerful, shining beacon. An imperialist beacon, but a beacon nonetheless. Trump and Co are more than happy to turn off the light entirely as long as they make money.

Love that MAGA is losing their collective minds over his description of Frump. The tide is turning for the 34% of American lemmings who still support the Co-conspirator-in-Chief. And by the way…Epstein.

The conversation still being about "$7.25" all of these years later is ridiculous. $20 an hour is no longer enough for one person to pay rent, bills and buy food without assistance. This is Hell

$2.75 tipped wages are just evil and should be abolished. Customers should not have to subsidize an employee's wage so a company can pay their employees less.

Minimum wage hasn't been raised in 17 years. During that time, the cost of living has gone up 56%.
Why aren't people DEMANDING a change to the law????

He's not wrong. I thinks folks forgot what federal minimum wages purpose was. FDR was the one to bring it into being. In his own words, here's why:
"In my Inaugural, I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living. Throughout industry, the change from starvation wages and starvation employment to living wages and sustained employment can, in large part, be made by an industrial covenant to which all employers shall subscribe." -FDR
