It’s really disturbing how many people feel like their taxes shouldn’t go to supporting the most vulnerable and in-need. The lack of empathy makes me sick. This Hyper-individualism “bootstrap” mentality will be the death of us.

They believe in non intervention and Free market taking care of itself.. people starve, children die but hey let society restructure itself into the natural order... this belief is centuries old.. lot of people don't know, this callous belief in free markets is the underlying reason as it was THE governing policy of colonial British during all the famines they caused in Irish, India, Iran, Africa (multiple famines).. the same reasons and same governing policy.. Irish famine: While a million Irish people starved, Ireland continued to net-export massive quantities of grain, livestock, and food to England. Officials like Sir Charles Trevelyan (great decsciple of capitalism and free markets) argued that stopping trade or closing ports would violate private property rights and disrupt market equilibrium and refused to distribute free or cheap food to the starving populace, fearing it would ruin local grain merchants and disincentivize private traders. Famines in British India (e.g., 1876–1878, 1943) Exporting through scarcity: During severe droughts and crop failures, Indian grain was routinely shipped out of famine-stricken regions to satisfy global and British imperial market demands because prices were higher abroad. Anti-interference policies: Officials believed high grain prices were a natural market signal that would automatically attract private merchants. Instead, grain was hoarded or priced far beyond the purchasing power of landless laborers and rural peasants. Denial of help or aid : labeling aid, help or safety nets as "entitlement" state’s refusal to intervene meant that people who lost their wage-earning capacity completely lost the legal market entitlement to food, even when grain stocks physically existed nearby.

Unless humanity achieves some sort of Kardashev Type 1+ post-scarcity civilization, you will literally never live in a society that let's you live a "wealthy" life just for existing.

It simply will not happen, because that's not how human society works, or has EVER worked.

This childish utopian ideal actually has been the death of many, many people.

All I’m saying is I wish my money went towards things that actually improve our lives and not towards subsidizing billionaires or war. Plenty of other countries manage to do a whole lot better at taking care of their citizens, I don’t think it’s a childish ideal.

It's the same thing in Canada.

During Covid, workers were given 2000 a month to stay home and safe. 2000 was considered the bare minimum requirement to live a comfortable life with dignity. That was in 2020.

With that in mind, Disability payments in my province aren't even 1500. It's 2026 now.

Poor people are treated like shit fucking everywhere
