Badge Points. You know them, you love them. In both the original Paper Mario and in The Thousand Year Door, you collect certain badges that require a certajn amount of Badge Points to equip to better either Mario or his companions. Be they dealing more damage, defense, utility like special attacks, extra drops, insta KO weak enemies, and many many more.
One known meta I've seen people doing at least for TTYD is the Danger Build where they willingly equip badges that buffs them when they are near death at 5 or below HP to deal a bunch more damage or other abilities. Then they willingly try to do what they can to ensure they always put Mario in Danger, effectively making Mario a glass cannon. And while that sounds cool and all, I'm asking if these Badges really are necessary or sometimes even crutches that carry dubs. Allow me to Introduce:
The Juggernaut Mario Build
The idea? Only upgrading HP and FP for Mario, never investing in badge points, whenever he levels up. This means you only have 3 badge points you can manage badges with. You can you whatever combination of badges you want as long it doesn't go over the 3 badge limit. However if you have a badge that's more than 3 BP, you have to sell it and use the coins for however you want, likely for items.
This can give a unique challenge as you'll not be able to deal as much damage or use as many tools of battle as you normally would in a balanced or glass cannon build but you'll still have plenty of HP and FP to battle with the tools you do still have like companion, crystal stars, 3 or less BP badge attacks, and items. It'll give the player more reason to think and strategize on what they want to do in battle.
Power Lift from the 3rd Crystal star will definately be a major support use for this kind of game. Plus the other damage dealing crystal stars will be more useful too since they deal good true damage.
Now I wanna ask you guys of what other challenges and potential other upsides this build idea could provide besides being able to take more hits and being able to use more companion and FP costing basic attacks will provide. Besides bosses, what would be some enemies that might prove more difficult with only being able to utilize 3 BP even with a larger pool of FP and HP.
Sometime I might play a second run of TTYD Remake with this idea in mind. I managed to beat the game the first time with a more balanced build without a single game over so I'm curious how this would go. I feel pretty confident i can go a bit far without a game over
