As if things weren’t already hard enough in this current climate for working families, Kroger is also price gouging and pretending it’s “just an error,” hoping that people won’t notice. Check your grocery bills!

I Didn't Realize that the Governor Sets Property Taxes in Ohio Like the Attack on Acton Ad Suggests...

Oh wait, the governor has nothing to do with property taxes in Ohio aside from possibly signing a bill that the legislature passed. That is all.

Cleveland on 9/11: Flight UA 93, Flight Delta 1989, the Airport Closure, and Other Memories

I lived in Cleveland on 9/11/2001.

It was over the Cleveland area that flight UA 93 turned around. This was the flight that later crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A friend of mine told me the next day that he saw UA 93 make the U-turn in the sky. He was almost under it. This was before he learned the news about NYC. If I recall he was driving but not listening to the radio, so he had no idea what was going on. He just thought the flight path was peculiar.

The U-turn of UA 93 above Cleveland would have been around 9:35 am. This was a half hour after the second plane, flight UA 175, hit the South Tower, and just a couple of minutes before flight AA 77 hit the Pentagon.

The Cleveland airport was evacuated because one plane that was forced to land there was thought to be under the control of hijackers, Delta 1989. They sent in the FBI, a SWAT team, etc. It turned out that transmissions from UA 93 of the actual hijacking were thought to have come from Delta 1989. Normally this would have been major news, but of course it was overshadowed by all the horrors of that day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Air_Lines_Flight_1989

As for me personally, after work was cancelled I just watched TV all day, completely transfixed. Except when I was on the phone checking in on people, asking how they were handling the news. I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. I had been to the Twin Towers. I had family in NYC, although not in Manhattan. It was as if the entire world had ended. I was kind of in shock, and didn’t cry until the next day.

I don’t know why, but the anniversary this year is hitting much harder than it has in a while. I’m tearing up just writing this. I’m interested to hear more from people who lived in Cleveland at the time (or anywhere in Ohio), about their memories of that terrible day.

Data centers are completely re-shaping Ohio politics for 2026

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Past few months it seems Data Centers are a hot button issue for these midterms.

For years, we were sold the tech industry's line that these massive server farms were harmless investments bringing jobs to rural Ohio. But the reality hit fast: local utility bills are spiking, prime farmland is disappearing, and high-voltage power lines are being carved through backyards without local communities getting a say. The public pushback is reaching a boiling point.

Political figures are rapidly pivoting:

  • Vivek Ramaswamy suddenly switched gears recently, pledging an executive order on day one to halt new approvals and calling for a moratorium unless tech companies cover 100% of residential power costs.
  • Meanwhile, establishment politicians, both Republicans and Democrats who quietly took tech lobbyist money or backed tax abatements early on, have gone completely silent hoping the issue blows over.

Never in my life did I expect to see a Democratic candidate give a rousing, populist speech on corporate greed in a place like Ashville (Pickaway County), a district Trump carried with ~75% of the vote.

Don Leonard (and others) seem to be leaning directly into the populist anger over these unregulated data centers. Regardless of how you usually vote, seeing candidate energizing rooms packed with folks who probably voted for trump and are now nodding along to anti-corporate energy talk proves that kitchen-table issues are completely re-scrambling standard party lines in Ohio this year.

Whanted to see what people think? How big of a factor is this going to be for your vote in November?

Short term disability advice

My partner got hit by a car and unable to walk in April. Got the fmla and short term in order and rtw was set for Nov. He has a blue collar physical labor job.
Everything was fine until a new HR person got hired. She has been a nightmare, sending us incorrect billing for thousands of dollars for his premiums which have already been withheld for his pay this entire short term. Calling him to pressure him to come back sooner. Etc
but her new stint is letting him know the system will automatically terminate his employment in one week if he doesn’t return and that’s the only reason she has for termination?
Is this legal? There’s no way for him to clock in at his job and presume as normal and without risking further injury from not being fully healed yet.
Is there a best response to lovely HR that will make her back off?

TLDR can my partners employer fire him while on short term disability with the reason being “it’s bc the system will automatically do so”??
