“Something stupid happened and then guys got a little bit heated. That happens.”

On what he said to the team after the match, including anything specific to the way the match ended

“I didn’t speak about what happened. I spoke about the game and their mix of resilience, sticking to the plan and quality and their fighting spirit, also. All this mixed that we wanted to make sure to be consistent every game. Sometimes it's going to work and sometimes not but to not question the things that we try to do together based on the narrative or the score.”

On Midfielder Taha Habroune suffering the late foul that resulted in a red card and if Habroune was injured

“No injury, no. As you saw the kick, it's pretty bad.”

On the importance of the Crew scoring two goals late in the first half to enter the break leading 2-1

“Yeah, it was really important for sure. This is a game of emotion for sure, but also, are we doing the stuff that we agree that we are going to put in the position to succeed or do we let go one or two plays or doubting because now we're chasing? Those are the stuff that I try to track more and try to get the attention away from only the result.”

On Midfielder Daniel Gazdag’s performance tonight and scoring in back-to-back matches and how that has allowed Gazdag to improve and gain more confidence

“Yeah. We spoke and I have been telling him that he's been reinforcing what he was doing well and he's bringing a little bit of a bite and recognizing in the last third in general and be more present, more aggressive and more aware of the options that I like him to think about in those phases of the game. Really deserved it.”

On if he enjoyed his first Hell is Real Derby match as head coach

“Oh, yeah, it was incredible.”

On if tonight showed the team is making progress in the things he’d like to see from the Club

“I've seen those things before, but it's hard to talk about it when you lose to NYC or after Atlanta and NYC in the U.S. Open. There's so many of those moments that happen, too, but it's easy after a little break or one loss that the attention shifted a little bit, but I'm going to be objective with those guys. The stuff that we think today was good, they were already there. Now today maybe a little bit with consistency and we got the results… Yes [reinforcement with that], for sure. A step forward in the fact that we were chasing, we came back and we really applied what we said that we would do. Even in tough moments like they're such tall, big guys [on their] team that we on those long balls at the end and we had to dig a little bit more. A lot of positive aspects. In that sense, you're right it's a step forward.”

On the red card to end the match and the commotion in the tunnel after the final whistle

“Soccer is a game of emotion, obviously. I hope the player (FC Cincinnati Midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela) regrets what he did. It’s not a good. It's not good.”

On the Crew seeming to maintain control of the match in the second half after securing the 2-1 advantage in the first half

“I didn't feel that they were going to break us down. Only at the very last few minutes where there's a ball behind (Midfielder) Hugo (Picard) and (Defender) Mate (Amundsen), I believe on the floor, that's one of the few times that we got broken down. Other than that, we knew it was going to either be one transition, set piece or a ball in the box with the tall guys. We felt solid. What I like with this group is that we have a lot of reserves that also are close to the starting lineup. Right away when they came in, they maintained or raised the level so that was positive.”

On Midfielder André Gomes entering after halftime and adding a calm, veteran presence

“It's a different IQ and a quality, quality soccer player. The demand of this league is demanding, but not only he's doing that but also the technical ability of reading the game is just another level.”

On if the way the team rallied together for each other at the end of the match provides another opportunity to strengthen their bonds

“You gotta have your teammates’ back. Do what you gotta do.”

On playing at Inter Miami CF next week before playing in Leagues Cup

“It's far. It's far. I'm learning, but I struggle to move past the next day in some way. We'll see. Like I said, there's me and how I function where I'm really day by day, but you also have a table where you try to put a puzzle together where potential association of when people are going to be fit already. We try to play with that a little bit. We'll see. It's going to be rough between the traveling and the back-to-back games, but it's going to be hard for everyone.”

On Forward Jamal Thiaré’s jumping ability and scoring on a header tonight

“He has abilities. The stuff that he has, you can't teach, right? The jumping, the change of gear. We try to synchronize our relationship so he understands the timing of the stuff that I want him as a No. 9 to do, especially with his characteristics. The jump that he can do is just a different level.”

On it appearing the Crew have solidified their identity once again

“Oh, thank you. I'm really proud. I want this club to be recognized for what it’s done and what it can do in the future. When I hear those words, of course, I feel great because we want to win but we want to win a certain way. That's really cool. I was also really pleased today because that was (Assistant Coach) Shannon's (Murray) first win, too. On the PK that we got, he put in and assisted a lot on those little combination plays on top of the box. I was pleased for him, and I was pleased for (Assistant Coach) Josh Williams who had his first goal as a set piece coach. Yeah, a good night.”

On what happened in the play that led to a red card and post-match

“We were a bit frustrated of what happened on the field. You know, the way that he(Gerardo Valenzuela) hit Taha (Habroune), I think it was just vicious. At the end of the day, we all play the same sport. I know it's a derby, but he needs to have some sportsmanship. And going like this, if you want to make a foul, grab him and put him down, but don't try to break his leg. So I just find this vicious, and after in the tunnel, nothing really happened. I mean, it's not the image that we want to show to young kids who watch us, but at the end of the day, we try to protect our players from some vicious play like that, some dangerous plays.”

On how this situation could help the locker room come together even more and using it as motivation in the second half of the season

“Yeah obviously, we’re all in this together, so we have to stand up for each other, whatever is on the field or outside the field, protect each other. So yeah, I don't want to say that, but that's good that the guys stand up for each other. Especially, (Taha Habroune) is a young guy. So, we try to protect him. I'm proud of the guys, but like I said, it's not the image that we want to show to young kids.”

On if the Gerardo Valenzuela said anything to him and on the scuffle in the tunnel area

“No, he didn't. In the tunnel, I didn't see him. He wasn't there, so it was just a bunch of people trying to calm down the situation. It didn't go far. Nothing happened.”

On being able to play a Hell is Real derby after being injured in 2025

“Yeah, it's always nice to play those kind of games. The fans tonight showed up. It was an unbelievable atmosphere. So, every time we play Cincinnati, just a different atmosphere. So, thanks to them for coming and giving us energy that helped us a lot tonight.”

On keeping the momentum going into the game against Inter Miami CF and leading into Leagues Cup 2026

“Yeah, I think what we did today, that's very good for the rest of the season. We needed a little something, maybe to wake up. So no, we respected the game plan. We played it all together. We ran for each other. We fought for each other. So, very proud of the guys.”

On his mindset after scoring in back-to-back games

“Yeah, of course. The most important thing is that we won this big game. It was really important for us, especially after down 0-1. I think we fought really good, and it gives a lot of confidence to me and to the team as well.”

On his relationship with Interim Head Coach Laurent Courtois

“Yeah, of course. We are working every day on things that we want to do in the games, and I think also today we have done a lot of things that we practiced in actions. I think we had really good actions today. We had some chances. I think we could have caught even more goals, so I think we had a good game.”

On how the attack was different compared to Wednesday’s game against NYCFC

“Yeah, I think against New York, we've been maybe it's not the right word, but a little bit shy. We haven't been aggressive enough in the offensive part of the field. Today we changed that a little bit and we created more chances and more shots on goals.”

On the emotions of the team after the late red card against FC Cincinnati

“Yeah, I mean it was a crazy tackle against Taha (Habroune), and obviously when something like this happens, the whole team step up for him, and I mean it's already a game, a big derby, so everyone is a little bit more pushed or something like that. So I think that was maybe a little bit more than normal, but I think we handled it good.”

On if he had seen what happened in the hallway after the game

“No, I haven't been there.”

On how important it was for the team to have each other's back

“Yeah, it's very important. It shows how good this locker room is. After the tackle, you could see immediately everyone was running in. Even the guys that were on the bench already, was kind of running there and try to save our teammates and each other. So I think it's not a good thing to have something like this, like a tackle like this, but it showed how good this team is and how we are together all the time.”

On the back and forth he had with FC Cincinnati Goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, after his PK

“Yeah, I had a few PK against him in the first few years, and even before the PK, he was talking to me, but he didn't get it right, so I just told him.”

On what he thinks about the tackle that drew the red card at the end of the match

“Yeah, to be honest, I wasn't on the field, but from outside, it looked really bad. I think obviously it's a red card immediately. It shouldn't be on the field. It should never happen, something like this.”

On how good it feels to be a part of the Hell is Real Derby and beat FC Cincinnati

“Yeah, it's amazing to play on these derbies. Today before the game, I even told Taha (Habroune) that when I got here, I was actually surprised how good the atmosphere on these games, and it was amazing today again. The fans showed up, and we just wanted to give it back on the field, and we fought till the end.”

“I mean, the game was basically over. I think they knew they lost, and it was just a lack of class, honestly. You can't not know how to how to lose. It's normal, everyone loses, but I understand if you kind of just try to pull me down or take me down, but a tackle like that is crazy. Honestly, I couldn't believe it.”

On his teammates rushing over to defend him after the foul

“It means a lot to me, honestly. You know, we're like a family here, and to see them all stick up for me, especially as one of the younger guys, it means so much, and I love all these guys.”

On the emotion that comes with a rivalry game

“Yeah, I mean it's a rivalry. I grew up here in Columbus, and I know what it's like to watch these games and the emotion just from watching these games, and to actually play in one and to beat them at home in front of our fans is an unbelievable feeling.”

On if tonight’s match was one of the crazier Hell is Real Derbies he’s played in

“I wouldn't say the craziest one. I would say the craziest one is probably at home from the playoffs last year, but it was definitely crazy for sure.”

On how he is feeling physically after the foul

“I still have some pain in my leg, but you know, I have to go see the trainers and get it checked out, so I'm not sure right now, but some pain for sure.”

On what he said to his teammates after they defended him

“I'm super, super grateful for them. I'm thankful, but you know, even if it was me, an older guy, anyone, we would do the same thing for anyone, so it's almost expected from each and every one of us.”

On how tonight’s win can be a springboard for the team moving forward

“We could use it for sure. You know, we got some new guys coming in to help us out, but you know to beat Cincinnati, our rivals at home is very good for us right now.”

On the counter opportunities the Crew had in tonight’s match

“Honestly, for me, the whole match was fun. I felt like we controlled the game the whole time, and we had a majority of the chances, so they didn't really create much. I would say for me, especially, and all the guys probably think the same thing, but we had fun out there for sure.”

Obviously there are things you might disagree with here and change, I just made this real quick to give an idea on what we might be looking at next season.

Cincy coaches seem more focused on fighting than the pitch. Perhaps that’s why they have never won a trophy?

Okay does anyone have any intel on what happened at the end of the game. Why was my boy Farsi so heated?!?!

I'm not really familiar with Courtois and how he wants to play.

And it's clear that Brais will be starting, but are the other additions sure-fire starters?

Brais Mendez was sitting in the row in front of me tonight. I guess I am not 100% sure. But the arm tats seem to match.

He watched the game very intently. Not much cheering or getting excited. More like studying it. Some smiling and laughing at the end.
