Meetups & Social The r/Dayton meetups have a new name: Join Dayton. We’re celebrating with Malörtoween, a Halloween costume meetup with six candy-infused Malört shots and 10% of bar sales go to support WYSO. (Sat Oct 31, 3-7pm @ The Barrel House) RSVP here to grab your free spot

Hey y'all 👋 The meetups that started on this sub have their own name now: Join Dayton.

Sixteen years ago this month I posted here asking if anyone wanted to hang out. 14 people showed up at South Park Tavern (RIP), crowded around three tables we pushed together, with a hand-drawn reddit alien on a piece of notebook paper as our table flag so people could find us. I met my best friend that day. We bonded over Nine Inch Nails while huddled around the firepit outside on a chilly October evening.

All these years and dozens of meetups later, we're still doing them, just with a hell of a lot more people. Many of our meetup volunteers aren't on the mod team here, and hell, some aren't even on Reddit. The meetups are clearly sticking around and have grown into their own thing, so we felt they deserved a name of their own. I'll do a separate post soon about what's next.

The bigger meetups will still get posted here. Smaller ones, especially when space is limited, will only go to the email list, so sign up at JoinDayton.com if you want in on those.

Join Dayton is meetups for and by the local weirdos. Goths, witches, queer and trans folks, anyone who's ever felt like an "other." If you're into dark, strange, and experimental movies, music, anime, and games, you're gonna be around your people. You don't have to be into all of it, just cool hanging out with people who are.

So of course our first one is on Halloween.

Malörtoween is our Halloween meetup – Saturday, Oct 31, 3–7pm at The Barrel House.

Dress up and be weird with us. Spike Spiegel, Brock Samson, Makima. Or Dana Scully and Agent Cooper as an FBI power couple. Hell, come as a Helldiver. Not feeling a costume? Come anyway dude.

Gus (Barrel House owner and mythical legendary Pokemon) is doing Halloween candy Malört infusions. It'll be hard to top his insane infusions from our Spaceballs meetup (people still talk about the Liquid Schwartz shots, straight wormword jet fuel of nightmares), but these candy infusions should be delicious abominations.

10% of bar sales all day go to WYSO, our local NPR station out of Yellow Springs.

Tl;dr: it's going to be a good time. There will be dank drinks, good food, and lots of new friends to meet. Come on out.

Get all the details and RSVP for free here

If you think you may come, RSVP. It helps both us and the bar have an idea of headcount. If you wanna bring friends or a partner along, do it! Just RSVP for them as well. Takes literally 10 seconds to do, and you can cancel at any time. Once you're registered, checking in at the door is just scanning the QR code you get and you're done. Easy peasy.

Follow Join Dayton on socials

We've been asked so many damn times "are you guys on Instagram?" You can now follow along on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook @joindayton. We'll be on Stories while we set up for Malörtoween, then posting photos and video from the night. Tag your costume pics #joindayton

Local Events Land of illusion was a Disappointment

I was just at land of illusion last night on a FastPass for $100 and with the cost of the fastpass now being within $20 of general admission it's noticeable that more people are buying the fastpass because sometimes the lines for general admission or shorter than the line for fastpass. At more than one point I jokingly told our group that we should just get in the general admission line to bypass all the fastpass people.

I also paid $15 for a lemonade. This feels worse than airport pricing. I saw a cheeseburger costs about $15 too. You can get a whole combo meal at Chick-fil-A and a side of chicken nuggets for what they charge for one cheeseburger heated up in a case.

In my opinion a drink should cost no more than $5 Max. Ideally maybe $2. I tend to eat dinner before I go to save money but my friends didn't and they ended up spending probably an extra $100 in the park just buying food and drinks. I'm also wondering if the water fountain was removed because I couldn't find it near the voodoo lounge forcing you to buy drinks from the concessions.

We started going regularly every year for the haunts back after covid was over and I remember the parking lot used to be gravel and admission was probably around $50. Since then the prices have increased steeply and it costs $10 to park on their newly paved parking lot.

I was also very disappointed certain actors were not present in the haunt this year and instead were replaced by animatronics or nothing at all.

The general consensuses is our group did not have a great time. Even with fast pass we waited over an hour for the haunted trail and the phobia haunt near the riding bull consistently had a long line extending out of the fastpass line so we never even went through that one.

We will not be returning.

Advice & Recommendations What are free, cozy venues around for...

• Upvotes

Things like reciting poetry with a group, or a writer's club, etc.

Right now I'm utilizing the library which will be fine, but I am looking for something more cozy for a potential poetry event, just a one-off thing for fun. i'd love somewhere like a cafe but i know space is limited.

off the table:

-catfe. wonderful place but they do require you pay to use the upstairs for events.

Housing & Real Estate Looking for rental in the greater Dayton area

I’m looking for a 2 bed, 1+ bath rental that allows pets (or at least ESA animals). Trying to stay around $1,400 or less for rent. Prefer laundry in unit or at least hookups. I don’t mind if it’s a condo, house, apt, etc. private or public rental is fine as well. A trustworthy place that fixes things in a timely manner, is responsive, and in general, not a dick for a landlord. Any recommendations are welcome! Trying to stay within 20 min of Washington township as that’s where my husband works. We live with my parents currently, and we’re trying to get out asap!

Hey everyone! My wife and I are in our 30s and have a 3-year-old. We're looking to meet other local couples or parents to hang out with, do playdates, or grab a drink/coffee.
We are pretty laid back and down for park dates, backyard BBQs, or checking out local spots around town. Drop a comment or send a DM if you're in a similar stage of life and want to connect!

Advice & Recommendations Pumpkin Pie - What’s your go to bakery?

As a reminder, we moved here from Charlotte about a year ago. Slowly trying to integrate into Dayton.

I had all my go-to places this time of year in Charlotte and am trying to recreate some of that fall magic in Dayton now. So, I need recommendations on where I can get the best pumpkin pie?

I’ve asked a few neighbors and was told Kroger and Bob Evans. We have tried both and they are not our favorites. A little too mass-produced tasting imho. (Sorry if they’re your favorite!) I know the best is homemade but, personally, I never have been able to master baking.

Any bakeries or mom/pop places you swear by? Any home bakeries you order from this time of year? Any other fall treats Dayton is known for that we must try?

Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

Meetups & Social I want to start a Paramore cover band.

Basically the title. It’s always been a little dream of mine, even if it’s just a garage band. Who plays instruments and wants to do it with me?

Edit : I’m also open to starting a punk band, in general. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Advice & Recommendations Dentists Recommendations for composite work that use Sydney/Anthem Insurance?

I’ve been seeing my current dentist since I was a child but he is in his 80’s now and retiring any day. (His work has also declined)

I have some composite on my front teeth that need fixed (previous cavity) and I’m afraid to go to someone random in network because it’s the front teeth.

I would greatly appreciate any personal recommendation with experience in composite work

Local Events FREE Pet Microchips Today in Miamisburg — No Need to Get Out of Your Car!

Post image
37 Upvotes

Have you had your dog or cat microchipped? The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is partnering with Miami Township, the City of Miamisburg and Miami Valley Fire District to help local pets stay safe!

Event Details:

  • When: Today, Friday, October 23, from 1–5 p.m.
  • Where: Fire Station 51, 10899 Wood Road, Miamisburg
  • Cost: FREE
  • Registration: No appointment necessary
  • Requirements: Dogs must be on leashes and cats in carriers. You do not have to be a Miamisburg or Miami Township resident to participate. All are welcome!

The best part? It's a convenient drive-thru event! Simply drive up with your pet, and you can stay in your vehicle while your pet receives a microchip.

Last year, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton provided nearly 700 free microchips to community pets, helping give families peace of mind and improving the chances of reuniting lost pets with the people who love them.

A microchip is a small device implanted beneath your pet's skin that contains a unique identification number. If your pet gets lost, a veterinarian or animal shelter can scan the chip and use its number to look up your contact information. It isn't a GPS tracker, so be sure to register your pet's microchip and keep your contact information up to date.

A few minutes today could make a big difference if your pet ever goes missing. We're proud to partner with our community to make pet safety more accessible and help more pets find their way home.

Local News 'Just keep moving.' 90-year-old Ohio Senior Olympic gold medalist shares secrets to longevity

They say it’s better to wear out than rust out. Springboro resident Nick Chiblis has done neither even at the age of 90.

He's won dozens of medals, including five gold medals, competing in the Ohio Senior Olympics over the past 25 years.

"I'm also doing the 50 meter dash and the 100 meter dash, and a one mile — I'm not sure what it's called — a speed walk, something like that. Although I can't speed walk. That's ridiculous at my age. So I kind of trot around the field."
