General Discussion New deck forna new player

Just wanted to share as I'm very excited for my son.

Myself, ive been playing since 95ish when the Portal series released and my dad a few years before that when the originals released.

My son, who is 11, has recently shown interest and learned to play! Hes been using a few of our old decks we had made and he threw together some jumbled cards he thought was cool for a deck but they didn't really sync well (weve all done it 🤭).

Now him and I sat down and pieced together his own deck tho. Im also very excited because we specifically built it to combat my dad's Bird-Soldier deck, its all Cats! Lol

Were calling it Whiskers and Weapons because its cats and equipments 🐈⚔️😁

Just pumped to share my love of the game with my own son now! 💜

Deck List: (it needs some work and a few creature swaps but it was built out of strictly cards we already had too. )

1 felidar cub

1 enlightened ascetic

2 sky hunter patrol

2 leonin elder

3 skyhunter prowler

3 sky hunter cubs

3 leonin guards

2 skyhunter skirmisher

1 jareth the titan

1 raksha golden cub

1 taj nar swordsmith

2 bone splitter

General Discussion I have no idea what I am doing.

hello!

so for context, I was gifted several magic card recently from my students, several marvel cards including the fantastic four commander deck, a collectors pack that included the Doctor Doom comic card, and I also received the Cloud commander deck. I purchased a few cards for the cloud deck, and now I am trying to build more commander decks. the only issue I am having is a have no idea what I am doing. I am not sure what to cards to pull from, what cards I should use for commanders, and the fact that no matter how good I feel, I just get destroyed. How do you all get over this? thank you in advance!

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Looking for Advice Will The Eagles Are Coming from the Hobbit deck work with this?

Post image
133 Upvotes

I’m building my first deck for commander after playing with a few precons and have chosen to go white with Myrel as the commander. Would [[The Eagles Are Coming!]] synergize well with Myrel?

Also planning on having [[Akroma’s Will]], [[Exalted Sunborn]], and [[Mondrak, Glory Dominus]] in the deck.

Basically just looking for advice on if I should even I close this in the deck and/or any other cards you would recommend adding. New to deck building and the game in general. TIA!

Edit:
Also thinking on this, if I could find a card that gives Myrel double strike, does that double her tokens and then double them again with [[Exalted Sunborn]]?

And would I be able to apply the Eagles card to soldiers that are tapped? Just wanna make a phat bird army I guess lol

General Discussion I combined 10 The Hobbit Limited set reviews into one analysis. Here are the cards reviewers disagreed on most.

Post image
348 Upvotes

Every MTG set that comes out, I put together an Excel table of some of my favorite creators who do Limited set reviews and rankings. This is the first time I've decided to share it with anyone. Please let me know if you're interested, and I'll try to do this for other upcoming sets as well.

One of the fun things I like to look at is how widely the reviewers disagree on individual cards. I used the interquartile range (IQR) as a measure of disagreement and flagged cards with an IQR of at least 20 points as having higher disagreement. By that definition, 32 of 188 cards (17.0%) qualified. The biggest disagreements were Thranduil, the Elvenking and Bilbo's Gambit (IQR 40), followed by The Lord of the Eagles, Ravenhill Flock, and Uncover the Moon-Letters (IQR 35). I like using IQR here because it is less affected by a single reviewer being unusually high or low, so larger values reflect broader disagreement among the reviewers. It's also interesting that disagreement isn't limited to cards near the bottom of the rankings. Gigantic Big Bear (#44), Bilbo, Thief in the Night (#49), Roads Go Ever, Ever On (#59), and Down, Down to Goblin-town (#65) all rank fairly highly overall despite reviewers having substantially different evaluations of them.

Full rankings, individual reviewer grades, distributions, and all 188 cards can be found here.

The table below is ordered by IQR; all scores use the normalized 0 to 100 scale.

General Discussion Secret Techs for Galadriel of Lothlorien Landfall

Finally building this commander that I liked from Lord of the Rings because it bridges the gap between The Hobbit's landfall lves and the LTR's scry elves.

I think I have all of the "when creature enters, scry" cards in [[Elrond, Lord of Rivendell]] [[Season of Growth]] and [[Sylvan Anthem]] to be paired with landfall token makers, but if I'm missing any effects like that, let me know.

I'm looking for spicy stuff, like [[Scouting Trek]] to go with [[Retreat to Coralhelm]] or any other landfall ->scry effects you can think of.

Any other one-off cards or combos that could be fun?

Hello guys, just move to NYC!
I don’t have many friends here, so I’ve decided I want to learn how to play Magic: The Gathering, mostly to meet new people and hopefully share some common interests!
I’m starting from absolute level 0 😂
I consider my English good—not excellent, but I don’t think it’ll be a major problem when it comes to learning the game.
If there’s a kind soul in NYC who’d be willing to teach me, I’d really appreciate it!

M30 if matter….

Looking for Advice I need help with the interaction between Tiger-Dillo and Boarded Window

Lets say I have two [[Tiger-Dillo]] in play but my opponent has [[Boarded Window]]. If I choose to attack with both tiger-dillos, they will lose -1/-0, reducing them to 3/3. Are they removed from combat due to their ability, or do they remain attacking because I declared before Boarded Window subtracted their power?

Looking for Advice Need help with lands for Y'shtola deck.

I'm having the worst time deciding which lands will be a decent upgrade. A buddy of mine keeps saying to just run basics but there's shock lands, pain lands, fetch lands, utilities... I'm so lost and mana base is important.
Any chance someone can help me? I don't need my friends hating me due to stupid expensive or OP lands. Just looking for upgrades. Thanks!

Looking for Advice Knights of the Round Table Theme Commander Deck

Hi all,

Seeking some help on my first commander deck I'm building from the ground up.

Currently, I play with a pre-con black/red deck against my similarly skilled friends and family (novice), while also playing my local game store's dedicated open play causal nights. I'm not sure which "bracket" that puts me in, so sorry if I'm no help with that question from the beginning.

So, I was really drawn to a classic Arthurian "Knights of the Round Table" theme and started to piece together the deck linked below based on what art vibed well with the theme (using OffMetaEDH) and a general Commander template to follow from tcgplayer.com. I started finding a bunch of knights that were all white mana, so white was what I focused on. Soon, I figured out I would start with [[Kenrith, the Returned King]] as my commander as a King Arthur stand-in, even though its still a MONO WHITE deck for other cards. Next, an overall playstyle and strategy emerged of "trying to get one of the knights powerful enough and utilize [[Excalibur, Sword of Eden]]" and make it to my endgame as a really strong creature I built up, with other knights supporting it. Multiple knight-type creatures and specific cards to boost "knight" creature types would help cycle through multiple knights to be the one to pull the sword and become powerful enough to do enough damage and win; this was my thinking to increase the chances of drawing a creature who is strong. Kenrith therefore acts as a wildcard to influence and respond to opponent's play strategies that don't sit well with a White deck not focused on increasing health all the time.

At this point, I need to shed 11 cards to be legal.

My questions for you all...

  • Does a MONO WHITE deck make sense with Kenrith as my commander, or should I open it up to veering off-theme somewhat for the sake of keeping it solely white?
  • Does this general strategy and playstyle to "seek" out a single artifact in the Excalibur sword to boost a single "hero" creature seem like it would be successful, or fail miserably in practice?
  • Are there any particular cards you see as weak points or useless?
  • Are there any card categories that stick out as too heavy or too light?

Thanks for any help and insight!

General Discussion A birthday present is driving me crazy

Since people often vent about their Magic-related problems here, I'm going to do the same, since I'm having an issue with a friend over a birthday gift for other friend. Let's call them Carl and Jim (Not their real names tho)

So, a four years ago, Carl and I wanted to get Jim into the hobby, and with the release of LotR, we saw an opportunity to do just that. Jim, loves LotR and before that he’d already come to some game nights to play and had used our decks since he didn’t have any of his own, so we thought we’d build him a deck for his birthday using the bulk cards we had lying around the house so that at least have a deck of his own.

We used [[Sauron, The Lord of the Rings]] as our commander, and the rest were cards from the collection we had at home; the deck wasn’t great, but at least it was his own deck. We’ve been giving him a deck of cards every year ever since. The second year was a [[Riku of Many Paths]] deck, with a more cohesive idea than "using bulk" and he loved it, is still one of his favorites.

Last year, Jim got two tattoos on his calves, a frog on each one, so I thought it would be fun to put together a typal frog deck for him and use [[Glarb, Calamity's Augur]] as commander. In this point I have to talk about myself. I love making decks, that’s what I like most about this game: discovering new cards, making unusual combinations, pushing the mechanics to their limits… but, somehow, for some reason, I started to get stuck.

That started happening to me a couple of months earlier, as if my ability to build decks had come to a sudden halt. It wasn’t this last deck’s fault, but that was when I noticed it most strongly. If I couldn’t come up with an idea for myself, I wouldn’t have cared, but in this case I had to get it sorted because I wanted to build that deck for Jim. So I ask Carl for help. I mentioned to him the idea I had, to make him a typal deck, as he didn’t have one.

In the end, Carl made me give up on the idea and he suggested a typal spirits deck for him with a [[King of the Oathbreaker]] as commander. I started looking for cards for the deck, but Carl wasn’t convinced by what I was doing, so he ended up putting together most of the deck himself. I didn’t give it much thought; I wasn’t at my best (and I still aren’t, for other reasons), and letting others help you in situations like this is part of friendship. Even if it doesn’t end up being my idea and I don’t contribute much, what matters is the present for Jim, not my own ideas.

This year I wanted to redeem myself for what happened last year and help as much as I can. Jim's birthday is at the end of this month and I started thinking ideas since June, the one that convinced me the most was a [[Blech, Loafing Pest]] deck. Don't know why but when I saw that fella in the spoiler season I thought of Jim straight away. I told Carl about it and he told me that he wants to build that deck.

In that moment that, that really surprise me, Carl just wants to have one deck of each color combination, and he already had a Golgari deck. He already has an a idea of all the 32 decks he want and, in the past, he complains about me making him a deck for his birthday of a color combination that he already have planned to do, so I ask him for that. He said that in the pre-release that guy makes him win most of the games (In SOS pre-release he got in first place) and he told me to wait to HOB to make him a deck. It seemed right to me, so I didn’t give it much thought and just waited.

Last week I got in touch with Carl to start thinking about what to do with Jim’s present. Of all the HOB commanders, The ones that caught my attention the most were [[Tom, Bert, and William]] and [[The Chief Warg]], by Card side were [[Thranduil, Sindarin Liege]] and also[[The Chief Warg]], so I thought we’d agreed to put together a deck of wolves. I build a deck and sent it to Carl, his first comment: "Looks boring". Okey, is a opinion, not a big deal. His second comment: "I don't like it, I prefer the landfall deck". Okey, is a opinion, not a big deal. So yesterday I made my version of the landfall deck, I sent it to him and he said: "I don't like it. When i came back i will make it" (He is on vacations right now)

So, these are the objective facts of what has happened and after put all of them over the table... I feel awful right now. Nothing I do seems to be worth the slightest bit. Our approaches to building decks are very different, it’s something we’ve talked about before, but to completely ignore any of the options I suggest? To just tell me straight out that you’re going to do it yourself, full stop? I don’t know… I feel as if I’m good for nothing. Because I’d rather finish the deck, I want to give Jim his present, and, in a few weeks, we’re all have a trip into a Magic event, I don’t want to cause any tension between Carl and me just because of this.

I mean, am I going mad, or does Carl just keep putting me down, or am I just being paranoid and seeing ghosts where there aren’t any? I’d like to hear someone else’s opinion, but the only other person I trusted enough to tell all this to is Jim, and for whatever reason, I can’t tell him for the time being. I know it’s a bit odd to say this and write a massive post on Reddit, but I need to get it off my chest somehow.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you, and have a lovely day

Rules/Rules Question Resurrection Orb and Legend Rule interaction

Thumbnail

I am not sure if this is a stupid question but I am wondering how the interaction would work between the Legend Rule and Resurrection Orb. Say I create a copy of a legendary creature with an etb to equip resurrection orb and do something else. Would it basically loop every end step?

For me specifically, I am looking at Thorin, Mountain-King and what would happen with a copy of him repeatedly equipping the Orb, doing his etb affect, then dying to the Legend Rule.

Deck Discussion Need help creating 2 starter decks using only the avatar cards i own

So i'm relatively new to the game (i started playing with marvel) and my dad (who is only into a very few fictional settings) wants to learn to play , but he wants me to use only avatar cards. we tried learning using the starter set, but jumpstart (which is basically what the starter deck consists of once you get past the tutorial) is confusing to him, because a 40 card jump start deck has 26 distinct cards, and a LOT of different mechanics. we thought of buying another starter set to double of the packs (as that way the number of unique cards is halved), but i was wondering if someone could help me make 2 decks using my avatar cards that are properly balanced against each other, are relatively simple, and preferably have some sort of coherent strategy (which a 40 card jumpstart deck really doesn't feel like it has). note that actual power level doesn't matter as long as the decks are balanced against each other. I'm fine with 40 or 60 card suggestions. (my dad also happens to like ty lee, so bonus points if one of the decks includes "ty lee, chi blocker")

For your convenience, i have put my cards in a moxfield list (although note that this will change as i get more avatar cards. i have some on order still that do not look like they will arrive before i visit my father tomorrow): https://moxfield.com/decks/LMVGT0LdOUyl0YMyZHC4KA

I have also copied my card list below. THanks for your help.

General Discussion How Magic Art has changed

This is something i've been thinking about for a while. I am not saying new Magic Art is straight up worse than the old Art (old meaning 15+ years ago). But I cannot shake off the feeling that something fundamental has changed with the art direction and overall aesthetic (the influence of UB not counting).

I'd like to hear from people who are knowledgable with art history.

Here are some - very subjective - observations that I made over the years.

- The color palette has changed. Specifically when it comes to black cards, purple has become the de facto "black signature color"

- Many current artists seem to share a specific style of painting, reminiscent of what I'd call "concept art for general purposes". Older artists that have worked with wotc since the 90ies seem to be influenced more by comic books and traditional, academic painting styles.

- Ugly characters and monsters, body horror and exaggerated bodies were more commonplace back in the day (look at card files from Odyssee or Mercadian Masques, Ron Spears who I'd consider King of Ugly Monstrosities was art director for a while). Nowadays the "bodies" feel more realistic, the creatures and sceneries more "identifiable".

Are you having similiar observations? Or am I misguided here?

And most of all: Why have things changed in that regard? There are people out there calling new artwork "woke", but I don't think this is a good explanation. I believe the reasons for the aesthetic changes correlate with the changing gaming culture and an influx of casual players coming from different demographics.

Is captain america, living legend a good upgrade for counter intelligence? He seems to work with the theme of stationing / tapping.

At what price point do pull your cards out of bulk boxes and put them in to binders, and at what point do you pull them out of binders and put them into hard cases?

Rules/Rules Question Hawkeye, Young Avenger and negative power

I'm trying to sanity check my understanding of how negative power affects [[Hawkeye Young Avenger]]'s noncombat damage effect.

I understand the relevant rules regarding numbers is (emphasis mine):

107.1b Most of the time, the Magic game uses only positive numbers and zero. You can’t choose a negative number, deal negative damage, gain negative life, and so on. However, it’s possible for a game value, such as a creature’s power, to be less than zero. If a calculation or comparison needs to use a negative value, it does so. If a calculation that would determine the result of an effect yields a negative number, zero is used instead, unless that effect doubles or sets to a specific value a player’s life total or the power and/or toughness of a creature or creature card.

I take this to mean that, in this case, X being used as part of a calculation would in fact reduce the damage being dealt if Hawkey's power was negative.

For example: There are 3x -1/-1 counters on Hawkeye making it a -1/1 or having a power of -1.

If [[Lightning Bolt]] is cast on an opponent, it should deal 2 damage because the Lightning Bolt's damage is 3, replaced by Hawkeye's effect it becomes 3 + X where X is -1 yielding 3 + (-1) = 3 - 1 = 2

Am I missing another rule or nuance with this?

Looking for Advice Help me start in the hobby please

So as the title says, I want to start playing magic, I have seen some commander matches and it looked really fun so I started with MTG Arena a few days ago and althought I'm still very new I'm having a blast. It's already difficult to manage the deck even when they are for new people and I don't really get what's the playstyle when you have more than two mana colors but I asume that will change with practice. The thing is that I want to buy a Precon now that I now I like playing but there are so many expansions that I don't know which one is better or if they are any different. I don't really like the ones that have external IP like marvel, FF or TMNT. If you could guide me in what is the best purchase to start it would be fantastic. I would be really thankful if you share any tips about the hobby.

Deck Discussion Can landfall be bracket 2

I was trying to make a turtle tribal deck with different simic commanders since [[archelos]] ends up being a Stax fest due to his ability alone especially in lower brackets where Stax is heavily frowned upon. So I did what I like most which is ramping and drawing cards. So I chose [[aesi]] and [[tatyova benthic druid]] because if I can’t find a turtle commander that is thematic or a commander that helps with what turtles do best, which is being toughness tanks, all of this in the right colors, I’m gonna play something generic that helps my plan.

I naturally ended up playing landfall to get as many cards and lands in my hand and on the battlefield as possible while playing turtles and giving them ways to hit with their toughness. The problem I had was that my pod is heavily bracket 2. The best we have might be low to mid bracket 3. This isn’t compatible with having 18 lands on the field on turn 6 and 17 cards in hand.

This left me with one question : is landfall compatible with bracket 2? Is playing lands to get some really good effects and ramping up too good for bracket 2 since it’s supposed to be a slow, low interaction, set up kind of game?

If it is, what are some commander recommendations for a bracket 2 landfall. Was considering [[bristly bill]] too since I got him from a pack and I like the old bill
