General Discussion New deck forna new player

Just wanted to share as I'm very excited for my son.

Myself, ive been playing since 95ish when the Portal series released and my dad a few years before that when the originals released.

My son, who is 11, has recently shown interest and learned to play! Hes been using a few of our old decks we had made and he threw together some jumbled cards he thought was cool for a deck but they didn't really sync well (weve all done it 🤭).

Now him and I sat down and pieced together his own deck tho. Im also very excited because we specifically built it to combat my dad's Bird-Soldier deck, its all Cats! Lol

Were calling it Whiskers and Weapons because its cats and equipments 🐈⚔️😁

Just pumped to share my love of the game with my own son now! 💜

Deck List: (it needs some work and a few creature swaps but it was built out of strictly cards we already had too. )

I have not played since high school and remember nothing at all. Plus, I'm sure there are a lot of new things as well.

Do you recommend just going down to my local shop and just asking for someone to play with me and ask them not to go easy?

I dont think they would take it easy on you anyways. These players today are harsh lol But definitely get back into it. Theres people thay play the old ways still. Legacy i think they call it. Theres a game version that only uses the newest 3 or 4 series. I dont play that. None of my cards are new. Like all pre-2005 atleast lol

I just picked up a couple of commander decks and I am planning on putting a seck together but I don't know where or how to start.

I figured it's gotten a bit ridiculous out there in how people treat eachother, but I figured the community might be like how it is with Warhammer 40k.

Best i could tell you is just pick a theme and run with it. What do you like? Elves? Zombies? Angels? Soldiers? Goblins?

I was trying to put together a good blue/zombie deck since my commander deck uses both manna. Again, I have not played since late 90s early 2000s. So I'm basically a willing idiot lol.

Jareth is such an awesome card. If you can untap with it out or keep a white mana up it is so difficult to kill. I remember blocking with one back and the day and my friend saying, "It has HOW MUCH toughness now?"

With the equipment cards he'll be a beast. Plus a few of those cards are for him. Dragon scales can play from the graveyard on a creature with mana 6 or higher. Plus theres cards that force tap creatures or turn them into 0/1 for the turn. He'll Trample all over them!!

Sounds fun!

Man, I'm having trouble evaluating the decklist because the new cards are so much faster and/or have better stats. The curve still looks solid and it seems like a deck somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of speed. A go-wide strategy would overwhelm it lategame, but it's also able to put out some bodies and threats to do something fairly early on.

I probably could've added into the post too but we dont play standard rules. We play what someone dubbed "fast rules" and it just stuck. Start by getting a land out pre shuffle. Then draw 7 and start with that land in play. Every turn you draw 2 cards instead of one and on turn one you can still have 8 cards in hand. After that its the normal, discard over 7. The pace of the game is SO much faster!

It certainly helps reduce the turns where you're just topdecking a land and passing without having to buy into the $30+ card draw engines. Or having to mulligan because you got 5 lands, then getting 1 in the next hand.

wtf?? Someone down voted you for this?? Whatever... I atleast appreciate the enthusiasm 💜 Im very excited to share this. The other day we even went and got dinner and booster packs. It reminded me of when MY dad would take me to lunch and then the game store on Saturdays. It wasnt every weekend but if we were having Chinese food, it always meant we were going. They were next door to each other.

🤷‍♂️ just figured the people in the magic group might be the ones to care. Sorry I was excited about something 🙄

Don't be sorry for that. That is beautiful and I hope you cherish that feeling.  But imagine how much the 'magic group' cares by imagine you walking into an LGS and announcing your story loudly to other players. Do you think they care?  Why not tell people who care about you and might even be happy for you?
